Middleton was president of LSU and graduated from MSU. Middleton Hall at MSU is named after him.

From the Baton Rouge Advocate:

LSU announced with black student leaders Wednesday evening that it will rename Middleton Library, pending board approval. The proposed change would include removing the bust of Troy H. Middleton and anything associated with his name in the building.
The announcement came shortly after LSU leadership met with black student leaders for the fourth consecutive day, discussing ways to bring more racial justice to campus.
The LSU Board of Supervisors next meets on June 19.
"Our goal is to erase symbols of things that exemplify a racist past," LSU interim President Tom Galligan said. "Any student, or particularly a student of color, that has to go into any building which bears the name of someone not identified with progress and with racist traditions is to inhibit their education. They won't feel safe in that building."

We need to rename America. The name was around when there were slaves, so it’s got to go. Need to rename a lot of the states as well.

Everyone slinging blame around for actions taken by those from centuries ago. One little bit is always omitted. Many of the Africans that were captured and sold to slave traders came at the hands of other African tribes. Doesn’t make any of it correct or right. But through the lens of history there are very few clean hands. The people of today won’t be the last to look back and judge those that came before. A lot of these self righteous types might want to make sure their houses are in order before the spotlight from the future is looking into their past.

This is all symbolism and not substantive. Just like I posted on the Nascar thread. Removing offensive symbols is great, and in many cases long overdue, but does it do anything to reduce the systemic racism we are trying address?. Symbolic changes are easy. Substantive changes require thought and hard work.

So ask yourself what it is those in power and in the media really want? Serious changes that require thought and hard work, or something else. I can tell you what it looks like to me.

I’m not going to act like the renaming stuff is not going to go too far, because I’m sure it is but I think this is more about not honoring people with statues and such.

Don't worry. When they have eradicated everything they don't like things will be all better and we won't have any more problems!!!

Let's start with the flag. Stars and stripes has to go.

It's coming. They won't stop until communism is fully implemented. Then everyone besides the ultra elite will be wondering how we got to this point.

I strongly suspect there's a lotta overlap between the "whatever this is all symbolic" crowd and "kneeling during the Anthem is an assault on the symbolism of the flag" crowd on a Venn Diagram.

There is a AirCraft carrier name USS John C Stennis. I would figure there are Black Sailors on that ship. I wonder how many of them even knows who he was and what he stood for?

I'm taking the family on a trip this summer.

Has anyone been to CHAZ? I hear it is a festive State. Like a block party.

"Unsafe" is a word that has no meaning if you equate feeling unsafe with feeling offended by an ugly part an accomplished person's legacy.

Middleton was wrong on integration. Then again, he fought the uber-racist Germans twice and taught Eisenhower how to do it. "There was a point in time during World War II when every corps commander in Europe had been a student of Middleton's." Helping to beat Hitler ought to carry as much weight as changing your Instagram profile picture for a day or two.

Hell, we should name another building after him on our campus just to balance things out.

Downvote away.

Well, I can assure you I'm not part of that overlap. I'm fine with removing most of these symbols (some of them are atupidly irrelevant, though) . I just think a lot of this is being done to throw progressives a bone, and that we won't see any meaningful change. I'm not saying "whatever,
this is only symbolic". I'm saying, "this is only symbolic, please don't stop there.". African American groups have enormous political capital right now, and they shouldn't waste it getting the names of buildings changed.

ETA: I never had any problem with the kneeling, or any other type of protest.

When will an opposing side start calling out this power grab for what it is? Crazy how all of this stuff has happened in an election year isn’t it?

That’s the issue. There is NO systemic racism. We have moved way past that. Is there racism in the world? Sure there is and it goes bother ways. This systemic racism is a liberal play to divide the country and take advantage of the people they are supposedly trying to protect. All the while getting rich of of their people.

and Old Gory too!

You're right and I bet my bottom dollar it's coming at some point. As soon as the woke crowd realizes that slavery existed and was supported under the American flag for much longer than the confederate flag heads are going to spin.

If by systemic someone means 'written into the law,' sure, there is not. If they mean there are biases among everyone and the majority class has the majority of the power and therefore makes a majority of the decisions, leading to more chances for biases against the minority, it is true that a 'system' could have an intention few individuals have. I do wish there was more clarity on the use of the word. It's become little more than a buzz word unfortunately.

This is the problem though. No one really wants to get to the root of the problem. Then once they actually have a good statement/thesis, no one wants to ask WHY.

In simplistic terms, it’s not abt racism. It’s abt the socioeconomic standing of black people as a group.

When asked why most people scream racism.

YOU CANT FIX RACISM. Some people are racist and some aren’t. Black, white, Hispanic, asian, etc.

Why are blacks committing more crimes than any other race in America? Bc the Majority are low income/poverty level.
Why are blacks mostly lower income? 2 things can be fixed by black people with very little help and even with systemic racism.

1. Don’t have children early and when you do make sure you are married. This is pretty much a statistical fact.

2. Graduate high school.

Why isn’t everyone starting with the low hanging fruit? The easy ****?

BC ITS NOT ABT HELPING BLACK PEOPLE.

You wont get any argument from me that American education from the bottom up is essentially broken and I dont see any government apparatus tripping over itself to fix it. Were that to happen, 1 and 2 would likely take care of themselves. Unfortunately I'm afraid we are going to need about 500 schools from private citizens with the money (e.g. Lebron and his school) to move the needle in underfunded and underserved communities.

Even then, Lebrons school is not without criticism, especially due to it being a lottery system that is publicly funded. Some parents have tried to get their kids in but cant and still wind up paying taxes for it. But the curriculum is interesting and it focuses on getting parents involved in their child's education.

So "this systemic racism is a liberal play to divide the country" based on that and the rest of your unintelligent post a conservative isn't involved at all with systemic racism. They "all" don't want to "divide the country and take advantage of the people" why because they're conservatives, seriously. That seems awful discriminatory to me lumping every liberal into one category and excluding all conservatives. Looks like someone has been Trumped

THE PARENTS.

It’s hard to blame this on government institutions. Black people have to look in the mirror too.

The Jesse Jackson’s, the Lebrons, the al sharptons, the people who are influential in black culture have to make that movement.

There is very little I as a white person can do to help black people understand that the family issues are the reason for their issues.

If I say that, I’m racist, and the convo breaks down.

Influential black people have to look the community in the eye and say it over and over and over until it’s a CULTURE CHANGE.

Charles Barkley has tried to say it and he was demonized for it. But what he said was true.

I get real tired of the victim card. I know colleges offer way more opportunities to any minority. I had several classmates, black, asian and hispanic that got way more scholarships than i received with a much lower ACT and GPA score.

I truly do not understand the white privilege. None of my living relatives have had slaves and we have all busted our *** and worked all of our lives to provide for our families.

I would truly love to listen and i am open to understanding the other side. These name changes just comes off as trying to be a victim. This country offers a lot of opportunities for everyone who wants it.
