"This newest MLBPA proposal would have the season start on July 10 and end on Oct. 11, a source told ESPN's Jesse Rogers. It also would expand the postseason to 16 teams (eight in each league) for 2020 and 2021.

If the sides are unable to agree to a deal, the league has the ability to implement a schedule of its desired length. It has focused recently on a potential 48-game season, sources told ESPN."

Are they getting any closer to a deal? Maybe.

How are you going to have 89 game in 3 months? That’s a bunch of double headers.

You are going to kill pitching staffs

Start July 4th, end September 30th and play like 74-75 games. Expand playoffs to 8 in each League if they want to and be done with it.
They are making this way harder than it should be.

Its a 94 day stretch. 89 games is probably 22 series that are each about 4 games. Teams will have to travel for 11 of those 22 series and be at home for the other 11. If you play a double header in 11 of those 22 series (50%), then you have a total of 16 travel days and off days. That should be more than enough. Remember, SEC baseball used to have double headers every single weekend over about the same time period, and those were college kids that didn’t have anything close to the physical maturity, training regimen, or health / nutritional support staff of MLB players and teams. It’s feasible.

Remember that those double headers were only 7 inning games and they were always followed by a day off an usually at least 2 days off.

Plus rainouts - are you not going to play those because I feel pretty confident it’s going to wash some games out.

You don’t want close pennant races decided because one team played 6 less games than another.

I want to think they thought it through but just doesn’t seem like a good idea.

Both sides are moving back to the 82 games they agreed on 2 months ago. All of this has just been posturing to try to get a negotiating advantage.

The sticking point is still on salaries percentage. Players want full prorated amount based on games played and the owners want to reduce their prorated amount.

Yep. That's what this is really about. If they can get that worked out, the number of games will be easy.

They will have to expand the rosters so you can keep extra pitchers on the staff.

Yep. That's what this is really about. If they can get that worked out, the number of games will be easy.

They aren’t really close on the number of games though. The 76-game proposal would only pay the players for 57 games, essentially. The 89 game proposal from MLBPA still requires fully prorated salaries, so players are getting paid their full contracted amount for all 89 games. So there’s still a gap of 32 paid games for players between the two proposals, which is essentially the same as it was when MLBPA insisted on 82 fully prorated games and owners countered with 50.

There’s a lot of back and forth and rephrasing of proposals going on, but they don’t seem to be making any real progress. Basically, MLBPA and owners agreed each player would receive a $20 bill. Then owners came back and said 17 that, we only wanna give you a $10 bill. Players came back and said “you went back on our agreement? 17 you! We want $25!” Owners came back and said they would pay $12. Now players are coming back and saying “we’ll take one $10 bill and two $5 bills instead of the previously agreed $20”. Its comical.
