I'm looking at moving to the coast permanently and I am looking for a new bank because neither of the banks I use in Texas (Chase and Amegy) have any branches in Mississippi, so I'll have to create all new relationships. Any suggestions?

Regions if you want branches all over the Southeast. The First if you want a "hometown" bank that knows you.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing, moving back to the coast after 40+ years in Texas. Of the locals, Hancock, Peoples and KFCU are good but don't expect the level of sophistication you had with Chase. Regions is OK, but is still no Chase.

Based on my personal experience Hancock is hopelessly behind the times.

We have used several banks - BancorpSouth, Merchants and Marine, KFCU, Charter (recently purchased by Citizens) and Regions. Also have several friends at Community Bank and Hancock.

Depends what you're going to be using them for.

I've become a credit union fan (Statewide Federal). They do know me on the very rare occasion when I walk in, their rates for EVERYTHING are cheaper than commercial banks (credit card interest rates as well if it matters). Check the local ones and go with the best. Mine only required $20 to open 2 accounts when I started and you have full benefits with that. I do most everything online anyway now so it really doesn't matter how many branches they have or where they are to me anymore but I do like the local people that work at them when I go and sit down with them when needed. They only have 1 brick and mortar location in Starkville but I can use over 5,000 ATM's nationwide for free because of the networks they belong to (10 in Starkville alone).

This is the correct answer. If you are talking about personal loans, whether mortgage, car, boat, etc., people recommending the credit unions are probably correct. For business loans and services, not sure how they compare.

It's not a bid deal anymore, but I would pick a big name bank for their atm network unless the smaller banks or credit unions will reimburse ATM fees.

This is the only answer

I will just need a construction loan while the house is being built...after that, I probably won't ever borrow again...I went through the RV stage and doubt I'll ever be a boat guy... So then it becomes managing my household account and online banking and transfers.

Statewide Federal Credit Union also has a brick & mortar location in Flowood just off Lakeland Drive. They make everything so simple.

When I moved from central MS, I had Trustmark. There is only 2 Trustmark branches down here, so I switched. A coworker recommended Keesler Federal Credit Union, and I couldn’t be happier with them.

Brick and mortar in Columbus and Cleveland too now. I've never seen or used them, but again, w/ online and an ATM network doesn't matter if they have 1 location or 1000. Compare your local credit unions and give them a try because most of them have that real low $10 fee only to open an account.

Credit Unions - 50,000 branches

I've become a credit union fan (Statewide Federal). I do most everything online anyway now so it really doesn't matter how many branches they have or where they are to me anymore but I do like the local people that work at them when I go and sit down with them when needed. Credit unions are member-owned so they are technically not-for-profit, but they offer great services and great loan/interest rates. Keesler is the biggest in the state and very large, but Singing River on the coast is also very good.

Credit unions have a shared branching feature, which means that you can go into any credit union in the country, wherever you happen to be, and conduct your business. If you travel, you can just pop into the local credit union. It does take an extra minute to verify your account with home credit union, but in the grand scheme of things its just a second.

Online services and phone apps are pretty standard for credit unions and banks now so most of us do our business that way nowadays anyway.

Not all CU’s participate in the shared branching network. There are areas (South GA and N Florida weirdly enough) that don’t have participate in the network. If you need to know where one is you can go here https://www.co-opfs.org/Solutions/Engage/CO-OP-Shared-Branch
i worked for Credit Unions for 11 years and in my last role I managed digital services and card services. My CU was committed to being cutting edge and we had a close relationship with Kessler and they are moving that direction.

Check your investment company for a bank. My investment company does my banking too. They have ONE physical branch in the entire US.

I can use any ATM world wide free (fees rebated end of every month), free FX transaction fees, the app is easy for check deposits, the checking account is linked to a brokerage account so easy to get cash to the bank side of the account if needed.

I do have an account at a large bank just in case I need a cashier's check immediately (can request cashier's check to be mailed to your home through my investment/bank account) as well though. I have free wires as well, but that's not standard.

You can set up a local bank to this main account I'm talking about just in case you do need a few local services and prefer to see someone in person. You can transfer money back and forth from your investment/bank account to the local bank you choose for free. It only takes one business day for the transaction to complete.

I only need to walk into a physical branch maybe once a year, so this works out well for me.

If you only need them for the loan, look at my initial response and PM me if you want the specific company I use.

I'll check with my investment firm but I just went through the loan application process with Kessler and two hours later I have a pre approval..I actually talked to a person who had a grasp of financial management. I will look into whether the 4K origination fee is in line with other folks.
