I saw a post on ED that started off sports and ended up driving to t-town. But, it got me to thinking about some of the crazy driving like a maniac events of my youth. Since racing is a sport and driving like and idiot is almost like racing, let's have some fun and share our best / dumbest drivin' stories.

Few of Mine:
1980 VW Rabbit - challenged dirt bikes to a jumping contest on the hill behind the old boomerang dorms - I won.

1980 VW Rabbit - From my driveway in SE Ark to parked at Evans Hall in 2 h and 50 minutes. That is back when almost all of it was 2 lane. Spent about 20 minutes straight with right foot in carpet on east side of Winona.

1980 VW Rabbit - Outran / eluded cops twice, once in Starkville, once on hw 82 near Greenwood.

1987 Supra Turbo (I drove but not my car unfortunately) - raced that big long bridge going into New Orleans at 100 - 135 mph (there was some traffic) against another supra. I won.

I know I wasn't the only idiot so let's hear what ya got.

Not mine, but...

One time, me and three friends dropped, drove around in my dad's car. He has one of those talking cars. We're road tripping and the car goes, "The door is ajar!"
We pulled over and thought about that for twelve hours, man.
"How can a door be a jar?"
"Why would they put a jar on a car?"
"Oh man, the freeway's melting."
"Put it in the jar!"

Couple stories

1) One of my buddies drove an old honda .. maybe a civic, cant remember... we used to try to get air off of these train tracks down the road from our houses. All things considered it was really stupid, especially since there was a stop sign at a T right beyond the tracks. Luckily, nobody was ever coming down that road the opposite direction.

2) Another buddy drove his mom's old beat up minivan. We would pick one of us to DD and the rest of us would have a few beers. Then we'd all hop in the van while the DD would go pick up friends who had been drinking and drive them around. It was like an uber/party bus combo. We called it the DRS or Drunk Rescue Squad.

Leaving Starkville to go home late fall of 1986. Heading north on Hwy 82 I had windows down because I was in a 67 mustang and the ac didn’t work. Split second I felt like somebody hit me in the chest with a baseball bat. It happened so fast I was more stunned than hurt. Once I gathered my senses, I noticed a dead dove in the passenger floorboard. Had a bruise the size of a softball

Was a Park Ranger at a State Park in summers of College. A buddy and college roommate stole the Portable Blue Light from the Ranger Truck. In the fall on a late Sunday afternoon, drove across the reservoir to Madison County to grab some beer. Driving the Trace back to Starkville, traffic very heavy. My roommate pulls out the blue light, plugs in. Traffics on both sides part like the Red Sea! Travels for it seems 30 miles.

Still have cold sweat dreams of this 40 years later.

While I was in the service me and a friend of mine from my hometown (who was also in the service) took leave together and drove from Seattle, WA. non stop to Kosciusko in 2 days, 8 hrs. and 20 mins. in his '78 Thunderbird. Took 4 days on the return trip. This was back in '79 when the nation wide speed limit was 55.

Caught air across train tracks in abandoned downtown Summit in my Tacoma coming back to school from a Crazy 8 Papa Roach concert that I actually hadn't drank at. Had been eyeing it for months and that was finally my best opportunity. A solid foot or two. Bout the time I landed I saw the cop sitting on the parallel street down the back side of the tracks and the blue lights a second thereafter. "Son you probably don't even know who the Dukes of Hazard are do you?" Of course sir. That's where I got the idea. I've been eyeing this for months. "Well, if you ever pull some **** like this again, I'm not going to give you a ticket, I'm going to call your coach." That was the moment I knew we had a pretty long leash in that town.

Found Dawg61 casually cruising left lane, nudged his quarter panel, got him loose, and put him in the wall

ETA The fun moments involved several instances in a modified Honda S2000. Hit 130-140 multiple times. With two gears left. 9k red line engine, what a fun car.

Back in high school in the early 80’s. A friend had a 71 camaro RS that was probably one of the hottest cars in 3-4 counties. We were cruising one night and he hooks up with this gal and wants me to drive which nobody drives his car. They hop in the back seat and start drinking and making out. About 2 am they are passed out in the back seat and I’m still cruising deserted podunk Ms enjoying the hell out of this car. I pop a Gap Band cassette in and when they burn rubber, I burn rubber, in town on a deserted straight away. I look up and see a cop coming around a curve about 1/4 mile away, I look down and I’m doing 135, windows down, two drunks passed out in the back seat, and the Gap Band blaring wide open. I consider my options but quickly realize that everyone in this town knows this car, and I hit the brakes hard. All four tires are locked up and squealing as I meet Barney. This was a time when the cops had to reach up and hit a button to record your speed, I had gotten down to 72 in a 45 when he locked it in. I pulled in and got out to wait for him to turn around and get back. Passengers still out in the back seat. He gets back pissed, I know him, he knows me, and he knows the cars owner. He asks me where I’m going and I tell him that I’m taking Phil’s car back to our local hangout and getting my Jeep and going home so he proceeds to follow me, still hasn’t looked in the car. I drive across town all the way trying to wake the drunks to no avail. I get to the lot with Barney pulling in behind me, I park Phil’s car in the darkest spot I can find, toss the keys on the dash, lock the doors, and go to the house. Phil and the chick wake up at some point and the next day he’s like WTF, you just leave me passed out in the car in the middle of town. I explained the series of events and we both just thanked God we didn’t both go to jail.

Long story short, came a minute or two short of running out of gas on MLK Drive in New Orleans with my pregnant wife. About as nervous as I’ve ever been.

caught a ride to Philadelphia one night with a couple guys in a souped up mustang GT. We made it back to Vegas in a little over 20 minutes... was cool and then not cool.

Not sure how many folks actually been in a passenger seat of a boat going over 70 mph. Its stressful.

In my fathers '54 6 cyl station wagon seeing how fast I could get it on a road inside the city limits. Had it maxed out at about 80 and realized I was at a t intersection, with a deep ditch between me and railroad embankment. Locked the tires and accidently started sideways and slid that way right up to the outside edge of the other road's pavement. Stopped with no damage.

Rented a car in Jackson, MS on a Friday after work with a guy we call Frank the Tank. Drove all night, hit a deer In Surprisebuttsex, Arkansas and got a rowdy speeding ticket in route to Omaha. Got to Omaha as the sun came up, took showers in a truck stop, ate breakfast, then started pounding beers outside of TD Ameritrade. Watched State beat Oregon State. Hopped back in the car and were home in time for church.

I'm reminded of the old Chris Rock joke: "It doesn't matter what city in the united states you are located in, if you are on MLK Boulevard, you are in the wrong part of town."

For you older folks before 82 was 4 lane you’ll remember the road dipped to go under the railroad bridge just east of the crossroads. Heavy rains on a Thursday night headed to the Club and the underpass had a foot or more of water covering the road. Hit that at 70-80 mph hydroplaned spinning 3 times before coming to a dead stop middle of the road blocking traffic both ways with a stalled out car and headlights approaching.

The run down golf course behind the Highlands there in 'Vegas was a favorite spot of my crew to head when skipping class to drink, fish, shoot...whatever really. There were two ways in, 1-through the highlands or 2-take blackjack road to get in the "back way." One night a buddy of mine and I decide to leave Rick's Dollar night and head to the golf course for some mud riding...bad idea #1. So, being the highly intelligent individuals we are, we decided to take 82 to the highlands...after the infamous 10 pm Saturday night roadblock by winery hill/N. Farm had already been set up. Bad idea #2. We crest the hill in his jeep and see the roadblock had already been put in place and business was booming, as usual...so we casually turn into winery hill/research park and park the jeep to "gameplan." The gameplan ended up being to cut the headlights off and take the jeep down the mountain bike trails to the gravel road (5 ish mile) gravel road the surrounds N. Farm and take the long way around to get back on 182. So we did it, entered the Highlands and proceeded to the golf course. Had some fun, slung some mud, even climbed a hay bale in a jeep. I wish I had pictures, but then again, pictures aren't always a good thing. Anyway, after some time we see two sets of blue light expeditiously moving our way. So we split for the back entrance, which has a locked gate, but we were in a jeep and some Mississippi pinstriping wasn't a concern. Cut around the gate, made it to blackjack and back to our apartment. They got a lot more strict with patrolling the golf course after that.

I am in the backseat of my roommates Monte Carlo. He is driving and another friend is shotgun. We are coming back from closing Len-Lews. We are coming up to the old 82 overpass at Clayton Village and I see the shotgun guy grab they steering wheel and jerk on it. Next thing I know we are in a spin and go off the road and go a quarter of the way down the hill and stop. Everyone gets out of the car and we are all yelling like a bunch of drunk idiots about what happened. My roomie swears someone put there hands over his eyes and that is what made him panic an lose it.

I tell him to give me the keys and everyone shutup and get in the car. It must have rained because we cannot get this car to go back up the hill. So I proceed to go down the hill and go through someones backyard and out their driveway to old 82.

From that point forward if we went to Len-Lews in the Monte Carlo I made him give me the keys because I was driving back.

In 1980 a couple of friends and I were catching out of New Iberia, LA going offshore. On the ride home one of my friends was driving my 1980 Grand Prix. He asked how fast he could go and I told him if you want to go 130 you can go 130, so once we got on I-10 he opened it wide open. When we passed Picayune on I-59 he looked in the mirror and smoke is boiling out of the tail pipe. We pulled off the next exit and checked the oil, the dipstick is almost completely out of the hole. We added four quarts of oil and hauled *** to Meridian. The next day, I pulled into Buck Glenn Pontiac/GMC with the odometer showing 11,956 miles, so they fixed it under warranty. Back then 12,000 miles or 12 months was the full warranty.
