Name a concert that you went to hear someone for the first time and thought it would be epic but it turned out completely disappointing.

1 - Ryan Adams. I was and still am a HUGE Ryan Adams fan, but heard him with his band The Cardinals in Mobile at the Saenger and he was everything people always said about him live. He argued with the crowd to be quiet when he played something soft, his voice was raspy and his voice cracked a few times. Was a total dick on stage (should have known).

2 - Foreigner at Memphis in May (Beale Street Music Fest) in the 2000s. LOVED this band in the 80s and Lou Gramm couldn't hit any high notes. It wasn't until much later that I realized he had throat cancer and had almost died, which made sense why he sucked so badly. Was a huge letdown.

Chris Robinson Brotherhood. The musicians are and were great individually (I love Black Crowes and Circles Around The Sun had a fantastic show at Duling Hall last year). However, when I saw CRB at Duling several years ago, there was no connection with me and I didn’t get into the performance at all. This show is the example of the anticipated epic event that wasn’t but it’s not the most terrible show I’ve seen in the past few years.

Thompson Square takes that honor. I was invited by a friend to see them perform at the state fair. I’d listened to some of their music and thought they sounded okay so I said sure. Unfortunately, their show was horrible & pretty much a waste of time with their only decent songs being Tom Petty and Johnny & June Carter Cash covers.

Not a first, but... I saw Jack White in Louisville many years back and was blown away. Went to see him in Memphis a couple years back and the show was not good. David Byrne, Franz Ferdinand, and some lady from Chicago in the blues tent put on better shows that day.

Deftones. Lead singer just rolled around on the stage half the time screaming random stuff that wasn’t the song.

This is easy for me. Circa 1990 I went to a Don Henley solo concert thinking it would be great and it really sucked. He railed on politics the whole night. He asked for a drink and someone brought it out in a styrofoam cup and he went off on the guy for fifteen minutes. The crowd eventually turned on him. I paid something like 35 bucks a piece for the tickets and that was a lot back in those days. Politics beliefs aside, I paid to hear this guy sing Heart of the Matter, End of the Innocence, and Boys of Summer, not rail on the president and the environment. This concert was at the old Mid South Coliseum in Memphis.

Was excited to finally see Tom Petty at Jazz Fest in 2012 but was completely underwhelmed for most of the show. The first 20 minutes were pretty good and the last 20 minutes were great (ended with MJ's Last Dance and American Girl). The middle hour or so was really disappointing. Mostly slow, deep cut ballads and I didn't know half of them... which I found weird because I think I have everyone of his albums (at least all of them through the mid 2000s).

Bob Dylan & Willie Nelson were awful at Jubilee Jams back in the day. Alabama in Brandon last year was incredibly disappointing. Really ****** show.

I’m in no rush to go see Isbell more. It’s not because of his performance, but the crowd can be lame. Seems like half the audience is there to rock because they love Drive-By, the other half is there because they love James Taylor and more mellow tunes. It can turn into a lot of “sit down!”

Hes great, but his shows have an odd dynamic.

Bob Dylan in '96 at Tupelo. Love his songs but paying (at that time) the highest ticket price I ever paid for gibberish sucked.

There were at least 30 people I knew there and everyone was disgusted.

Robert Earl Keen. Love REK and still listen to it routinely, but saw him live at a small venue and it was like he couldn't have given less of a ****.

Willie Nelson about five or six years ago. He just talked through all the songs.

I love Willie but have been in this situation myself multiple times. Meridian at Jimmie Rogers festival in early 90s and in Starkville during the late 90s as a student. But hey love his music and how can you not go see him when in the same town. Well interestingly enough he came through meridian again a few years back at the Riley Center. We get tickets through where I work so I go to a good bit of shows anyway no matter the act and since they were free to me I was glad to get to go and I tried to temper my wife’s expectations some. To my surprise he put on a great show and I had a wonderful time. Part of it was lower expectations but he really didn’t talk thru the songs as much and it is always a great venue for crowd interaction and also the talent seem to love playing there. Pleasant surprise.

Foo Fighters at De Luna fest. It’s not that they were bad, but Pearl Jam played the night before and it was a very long set with a ton of effort. Foo Fighters just didn’t have the energy and the set was pretty short.

Similarly, I saw Arlo Guthrie in Memphis back in the 80s and he was so drunk he couldn’t sing a complete song and had a hard time staying on his stool.

George Strait..... would never pay to watch him in concert again. He's got 100 #1's and proceeded to play all "new" stuff. Was horrible.

This is disappointing. I’ve been wanting to see them live from sometime now. Was planning to go see them in Memphis before all this hit. Oh well I guess.

I’ll preface this by saying that I’m not a big country fan but I do enjoy Kenny Chesneys shows, kinda reminds me of 90’s era Buffett. We were at one of his big stadium shows at Titans stadium and all kinds of stars were coming out and performing. Gretchen Wilson comes out with just a Guitar and a stool and when I say she was bad, she was being booed by her second song. I actually felt sorry for her.
On the other end of the spectrum , back in 2003 we were at one of the Harley Davison 100th anniversary rally’s and one of the free concerts was Blues Traveler. We went not knowing much about them beyond what was on the radio. I was blown away, they were fantastic. Top three concerts I’ve ever seen, maybe number one.

I've been to a 4 Deftones shows. Half were good. Half were bad. Staind is a band that was mocked for being awful live when they first started out. I saw them at New Daisy back in the late 90s and they were dull. Probably the worst stage presence of any band I've ever witnessed. Including open mic nite at The Parrot. Luckily they figured it out and eventually became more comfortable on stage.

I’ve never been to see isbell but I can definitely see this happening.

Saw him at Jazz Fest several years ago and he was pretty damn good. Last year at Ride Fest he was very disappointing and didn't even play his whole time slot.

One time I went to an Incubus concert in Jackson. The opening act was some fat white guy dressed up in tights that sang R&B. I think he was trying to be funny or ironic, but before he couldn't even start his act the crowd started booing him. He then proceeded to start insulting the crowd and yelling things like, "everyone is right about Mississippi, you're a bunch of hicks, etc...." Watching this was probably more entertaining than his act would of been. Incubus still came out and put on a good show, but the opening act was hilarious.

I was there to see Deftones and Metallica. Deftones disappointed. Linkin Park was actually really good live. I happen to be at the concession stand when Limp Bizkit played “Break Stuff” and I’m glad I was.

Oh man, I was at that show. Har Mar Superstar was the opener. I'm pretty sure he was wandering around on stage in his underwear. Brutal.

Jimmy Buffet at Jazz Fest. Don't remember the year, but I've heard garage bands, actually in a garage, sound better. Mystikal was performing on another stage, after a couple of Buffet songs, walked over just in time for Here I go. Mystikal put on a show.

Stevie Nicks at MSU in the 80's. She was coked off her *** and indecipherable. Thirty minutes in to her show most of the crowd got up and left. Joe Walsh opened and was great.

That sounds like Vince Gill around 93 in the Hump. So drunk he fell over the mic cord and was holding onto the monitor to keep on the stage. We were 12 feet away laughing our asses off.

Dave Mathews band. Big head todd opened and played an encore (never seen that before)- when dmb came out everyone was spent and one of the most dead shows I’ve been to. State palace circa 96. I’ve seen Dave a few times, the rest were decent.

eta- did anyone see seven Mary three at MSU? Only time I’ve seen a band play their big hit twice in one show

I was there for this. I still remember her sitting down on the stage and petting an imaginary dog.

Marshall Tucker Band in the early 90s. Lead Singer lost his voice and was only able to sing a few songs before handing the vocals to another band member. To give them credit, they didn't cancel and played the full set, just were limited on what they could do. Still had a good time.
