kiddo loves the koolaid and I promised peach cobbler this week. It didn't break me, but I'm wondering if the sugar industry in the Caribbean has been struck by the covid or of grocery stores are just 17ing us at this point

Winner winner

or of grocery stores are just 17ing us at this point

Some items I buy have gone up 40% at Kroger during this crap. If you have an Aldi in your area, shop there. They carry most things and are 30% cheaper on average than Kroger.
4lb bag of sugar is $1.58 at Walmart by me and Aldi is probably $0.10 less than that.

Tenure, that is a little high for Store Brand, but most retailers are buying it wholesale at about $1.80- $1.95. Lowest I saw it wholesale last year was $1.65. Just not much difference in Store Brand and National Brand in most commodity items like sugar, Cooking Oil, and even Milk. Retail is running about $2.29 to $2.59 on Store Brands in my customers.

Was it off brand? If so you probably paid about 1.00 too much.

Is that beet sugar or cane sugar running that low? Walmart is using it as a lost leader right now. Surprising Aldi is running sugar at $1.48.

Edited to add that some imported sugar from Central America and southern Mexico is being packaged and sold wholesale at about $1.40, so a retail of $1.58 is about right at the king of non-American commodity sales.

A house brand at Kroger would probably be $1.99 and a name brand probably $2.49 or so, a little bit of a ripoff but sugar prices do fluctuate a lot. Besides, the kiddo is worth it.

Cane sugar. I don’t know for sure at Aldi, but they are typically about $0.10 less on sugar according to the Wife who just pulled up today’s receipt from Walmart. She pretty much has these prices memorized.

Just looked at a bag of Domino sugar, which I would consider the Name Brand. It said nothing about country of origin, so I’m assuming it’s not made in the USA. What sugar is made in the USA?

4 lb, little bag

The "standard" used to be 5 lb. So they've lowered the normal purchase by 20% and probably kept the price the same. Same as coffee - used to be a normal package of coffee was 1 lb. Now it's more like 12 oz.

What is a whole lot? Do we make as much as we consume? Serious questions. I have no clue about the sugar industry.

Domino refines 2.2 million tons of cane sugar grown in 4 US State, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Hawaii, with most coming from Texas. Domino refineries are in Yonkers, NY, Baltimore, Md., and Chalmette, La. The US, refines 8.5 million metric tons per year, more than enough to serve the US and Canada. Brazil produces the most by far, of the worlds 1.7 Billion tons. Most private brands are packaged by C&H Sugar.

Send a thank-you note to Congress and the Feds.

For decades, the federal government has been operating a program to control the production and importation of sugar. One of the program’s main purposes is to ensure minimum price levels for sugar that are typically significantly higher than those found on international markets, leading to higher costs for U.S. consumers. As a result, the federal government is, in essence, the leader of a nationwide sugar cartel.

Price has gone up a little but not much. Retailers are marking sugar up around $0.30/lb. I work in the food industry and we buy around 2 million lbs of sugar a month in the $0.40 - $0.50/ lb range with it being closer to $0.50/lb right now.
