Dak not a Top 5 QB?

I think Dak is very good, but my stance all along would have been take less money but get a guaranteed pay day.

$30 million guaranteed over 4 years is a lot of money.

I don’t need to be the highest paid. I just want to be paid.

jerry wants him locked down for 5 years, otherwise, he would have already signed.

If that’s the case, I’d be trying to work my contract like this.

Top paid is $40 (just throwing a number out there)
I want
Year 1 $30 guaranteed
Year 2 $32 guaranteed
Year 3 $35
Or some percentage of the highest paid each year

I wouldn’t risk missing a guaranteed pay day over being the highest paid.

Maybe those risks are minimal, but my approach would be less than highest paid but a guaranteed payday.

I also think I’d take less money for longer than potentially more money in the future.

How much money did Dak save by not signing and having a bunch his signing bonus in the stock market? Since he's in TX his financial advisor may have told him investing in oil is no brainer.

Again, Dak would like to be a Cowboy for life, but he is not going to agree to more than 4 years unless year 5 is a monstrous payday option forcing the Cowboys to re-negotiate during year 4.

But he is going to make at least $30 million this year. So he can put away a nice nest egg. And have the best year of his career, winning a Division, and making himself so valuable, other teams force the Cowboys to act.

Dak is in that top 10-12 range, but I have him over players like Goff and Wentz. Their salaries should be the absolute floor in negotiations.

Soon though, guys like Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, etc. will be out of the league and Top 8 will be a given, perhaps top 5.

But he could have a bad year
Not make the playoffs
And considerably drop his “market value”

I’m saying I’d shoot somewhere in the middle and heavy on incentives.

The top being holding out, having a killer year and monster pay day, or The bottom being holding Out, having a crappy year and a just ok pay day.

Wrong. He could have the worst year of his career and still have better overall career numbers than the likes of Jared Goff (who extended for 4-years with an average of $32 million per year).

Dak wants a 4-year deal in the Wentz / Goff stratosphere. Dak is better than Goff and Wentz by every objective criteria out there. Its really that simple, but Jerry wants longer than 4 years in spite of that being the standard extension length that has been signed by every young QB in the last 4-5 years. Jerry had no problem at all vastly overpayingfor both Zeke and Amari, but he won’t even match the market standard deal for the most important position on the field. Its asinine.

It’s not wrong to think he could have a bad year (and also be his worst year), and that hurt him for his future earnings.

I’m sure he’s weighed the risks rewards and it’s America! He gets to choose.

I’m just saying what I’d do. I’d take a WHOLE LOT OF GUARANTEED money and not worry abt getting the absolute most I can.

Agreed. I want Dak to make as much money as possible, but he's not good enough to make top 5 money and the team still have enough resources to sign enough help. He's not quite the force multiplier of Brees, Rodgers, or Maholmes. Dak signing a record deal will have the same effect at Stafford with the Lions. As someone that hates the Cowboys, I hope he signs the riches contract of all time.

I think he should go ahead and sign. There's no telling what the fallout from Covid might be over the next few years and it's possible he might not get anything, in the worst case.

Dak is 7-1 vs the ForeSkins. That is why Theisman is a Dak hater. 17 him.

Or it could be he doesn’t think he’s better than Mahomes, Brady, Brees, Wilson and Rodgers.

But sticking with your homer theory, I assume you think he is top five. Probably has nothing to do with where he played his college ball.***

It's not going to end the NFL, but it could certainly reduce their salaries.

At any rate, why is he holding out? $30M/year is pretty good money.

But that’s the thing....he’s NOT trying to get the most he can. He just wants to be given the same chance as every other young QB in the past half decade to hit a major payday again in 4 years, because its the position of the highest salary inflation in all of professional sports. And the fact that he was a 4th rounder who’s been playing for peanuts his entire career makes him more entitled to that chosen financial position than perhaps any other QB in NFL history besides Tom Brady.

Not just a marquee franchise, the most valuable professional sports franchise on the planet. The level of mismanagement has been downright comical.

Dak is not a top 5 QB in the NFL, but Wentz and Goff have already set the market at $32 million-ish per year and about $110 million guaranteed. At this point in his career, Dak has been every bit as good as both of those guys. Probably better.

From the perspective of his representation and Dak himself (who is trying to go from growing up in a trailer to earning generational wealth for his family), why would they accept anything less in guaranteed money than two other guys who have not performed as well as him?

He’s not top 5. Agree with top 10-12. I wish he’d take like 30 over three. They’re going to need salary cap room for oline, wr, and defense.

if you take all the salary and have no one to throw
to, or a crappy defense where you have to score 50 to win it will suck worse than not getting paid what you’re worth.

Agree on the Stafford and lions comparison. But they’ve been .500 even with cap room so who knows with Jerry/Stephen in charge.

Jerry Jones needs to do what he can to sign Dak now. He doesn't want to wait until Mahomes signs a new contract because every starting QB's price will increase accordingly.

The statement above is just silly. People act like Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers were always what they are now. Lets look at what they brought to the table when they were in Dak’s current position:

Brees’s first 4 years as a starter resulted in a combined passer rating of 84.6 and a horrific shoulder injury.

Aaron Rodgers didn’t even become a starter until year 4. That year, he did throw for 4000 yards with a passer rating of 93.8 and a QBR of 64.4.

Dak in 4 years has been starting the entire time, something neither Brees nor Rodgers were able to do early in their careers. Dak’s career passer rating of 97.0 is way the hell higher than Brees’ 84.6 in his first 4 starting years, and he’s still healthy as a horse. Dak’s year 4 production of 4,902 / 99.7 / 70.2 greatly exceeds Rodgers’ Year 4 production of 4,038 / 93.8 / 64.4.

Mahomes? There's no comparison there, he currently appears to be otherworldly and definitely an elite talent that might wind up being the best ever before its all said and done, so I’m not bringing him into the discussion.

But at the end of the day, you don’t pay a QB for what he’s done, you pay him for what he’s going to do. Fortunately for Dak, what he’s done already more than proves his worth as POTENTIALLY becoming a Top 5 QB for the prime years of his career, and his numbers compared to two all-time greats at the same points in their careers does nothing but enhance that.

I'm sure he'd jump all over 30 over 3 right now if it were offered. The key issue is the Cowboys want to lock him up long term at a contract that, while top 5-10 today would be far less than average in the last few years.

I don’t think he’d take 30 over 3 at all. He’ll get $73 million over 2 years automatically (all fully guaranteed) just from a couple of franchise tags. Then by the time those are up, he’s in the $40 million per year club for a long term deal starting in 2022 with the Cowboys or someone else.

I think he’s closer to 8-10 than 10-12 but I agree.

Dak’s a tough cookie, more than durable, but I’d be bad nervous with the franchise tag. It doesn’t take but one bead hit, you don’t want to wind up being Wally Pipp. Even though Romo wasn’t that young and had a history of getting hurt, I’m sure the thought of him never taking another snap in Dallas never entered his, Jerruh’s, nor Garrett’s mind.

This isn’t as far fetched as some might think.

If we don’t have fans in stadiums and the economy suffers more, lower salaries is a real possibility.

So he’s trying to get the absolute most he can?

Uh, no. He’s not. If he was doing that, he would have threatened to sit out games with 2 years left on his contract until he got insanely overpaid as the highest paid player at his position in the game. You know, like his pal Zeke did. A similarly structured deal to two inferior players who both signed extensions over a year ago is in no way, shape, or form the “most he can get”.

I've got (not in this order) Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Wilson, Mahomes, Jackson, and probably Watson ahead of him right now, so he is closer to 8th than I was thinking. Not sure about Roethlisberger after the elbow surgery. Theres a case to be made for guys like Ryan, Garrapalo, Wentz (when healthy), Stafford and maybe Rivers but so much of that last group depends on their surroundings. Dak should be paid like a top 10 QB and he should turn down anything less, but I could see him turning down a bigger haul for more guaranteed and less years.

I don’t totally disagree with any of that but I would move Lamar Jackson and Watson down into that second group. I don’t think Jackson’s style is one for long term success in the NFL. As they did a couple times late in the season and playoffs I think once teams adjust and take away their running game and make him beat you with his arm he’s gonna come back to earth. His style is just so unique that it’s taken a little time to get a book on him. Teams really haven’t seen a player comparable to him since Steve Young but Young was an A+ passer whereas LJ is closer to a C passer. The niners moved Joe Montana because of how special Young was. The Ravens moved off of Flacco for Jackson because outside of an extraordinary playoff run Flacco was average to slightly below average on his best days.

Now no doubt Watson is a special player and a winner but I don’t know that he can survive another 4-5 years with some of hits he takes, partially became Houston’s OL sucks and partially because he tends to hold onto the ball to long trying to make something out of nothing. Now that Hopkins is gone, whom no CB could really cover, you’re gonna see him regress. Still a special player, but not head and shoulders ahead of Dak.

If I was Dak anc I could get an offer slightly better than Goff’s then I’d probably take it as half of Dak’s games are played in Texas with no state tax, whereas half of Goff’s are in Cali which probably has the second highest state tax rate in the country. I don’t know how many of you knew this but players in all the big 4 sports leagues hafta pay the state tax (if they have state tax) in every state in which they play a game in.

So even with identical contracts Dak’s would probably be worth a million or 2 more than JG’s. Not to mention how much being QB1 for America’s team is worth off the field. Goff could walk down any sidewalk in any city including the one he plays in and maybe 2% of the people he’d meet would recognize him. I figure it’s closer to 50% or higher for Dak, and that’s worth a fortune in endorsements. I

I haven’t read or heard that. I’ve read that is what Dak wants, but Jerry wants 6 years. Salaries are going to take a huge jump in two years.

Just by last year's QB rating, he is 10th. Tannehill, Brees, Lamar Jackson, Cousins, Russell Wilson, Stafford, Mahomes, Garoppolo, Derek Carr, and Dak. Interesting note, Logan Cooke had a higher QB rating than Dak last year. He was 2 for 2 on his fake punt passing attempts. That's skrong!
