I've seen about two dozen of these threads in the last month - let's hope one pans out because outside of New York things aren't on the decline.

Never understood separating NY. NY has 25.5% of the US cases and 33.4% of the deaths. Great job, NY, I guess.

Yeah he refuses to acknowledge that association. It’s what dumb 17s do that just want to muddy the conversation.

The plan for pandemic response that we and most countries had developed from prior pandemics was to (1) identify it early, (2) lock the population down while we don’t know who has it, and (3) allow the population to return to work when we have sufficient testing capacity to identify those that have it and quarantine them instead.

We denied it existed, allowed it to spread before taking action, wasted the time we had locked down by not developing sufficient testing capacity, and are reopening anyway.

That’s great news. On the way to herd immunity. Also we are testing everyone that walks in our hospital and I’m sure many hospitals are doing the same so naturally positives will go up. Over half are asymptomatic. Number of positives isn’t the issue. The number that are in the hospital is what you need to look at. Even more so the number that are actually in ICU.

That may be what you wanted the plan to be...

But the actual plan almost everyone in the West went with was to simply flatten the curve and buy time without it overwhelming our healthcare system. From that perspective, outside of a few states (like New York), we closed too tight, too early, and ended up doing some amount of unnecessary economic damage (we can debate how much for years). That was driven by the media refusing to discuss things objectively, and the herd mentality taking over.
Luckily, this thing turned out much less deadly than initially thought, so the majority of the country can continue the soft open and the % of positive vs total tests can continue to drop.

I'm ready for the geneticists to identify we why some people (younger than 65 no comorbitiies) get sick as hell, but most don't even know they have a sniffle. There is going to be a real headslap moment where someone figures that out.

It really will be. It also makes me wonder if it works the same for other things like the flu. We never run around getting tested for the flu unless we have symptoms. Could it be the case that a much larger portion of the world gets it as well but are asymptomatic?

Per my inside sources, researchers are looking at genetic ethnicity as a possible avenue of some being asymptotic. They’re also pursing the avenue of ACE-2 receptors as the link to adolescents being less impacted by the virus.

I believe 25-50% of influenza cases are asymptomatic, depending on the strain. I have seen some higher estimates as well.
