618 additional tests yesterday, 90 new positives...

Here's the thing that best bares watching here in MS... it looks like measures in place have basically flattened the curve here for 9 straight days now(measured from the onset of symptoms, not the date of positive test). It gives the appearance of pretty successful social distancing from the time it was first instituted...

Also, hospitalizations by day: 211 currently
195 yesterday
235 Sunday
219 Saturday
185 Friday

We'll know more in the next few days but these numbers sure seem encouraging to me...

yes, that really looks good for Mississippi... We seem to have taken this quarantine a little more seriously than believed. Lots staying home, online church services, schools, restaurants, large gatherings limted, even those working are using social distancing.

We are not out of this thing, but it this does look encouraging.

But the narrative is "Tate ain't doin nothing"

Tate's coverage has been pretty Trumpish on this without actually doing anything to earn it. Turns out that you don't have to "do" a lot when a high enough percentage of people are already doing what they are supposed to be doing on the front end -- to produce the desired results. You know priorities are out of whack when he is criticized to the heavens for not being a grandstanding douchebag handing out executive orders like candy with no method nor plan to enforce said measures just to score points with other grandstanding douchebags.

And to be clear, I don't particularly like Tate and figure my opinion is pretty average for Mississippians. But he's being treated so unfairly on this one so far that it's forcing me more and more into his corner.

I have been watching that chart and they are adding data to well before the shaded area. Still shows the same trend, so still encouraging I guess, but not sure how much stock to put into it since we are apparently still getting data back to mid march.

I been self-isolating since Tate was in Spain, and I suspect there are a fair number of other Mississippians that don't look to government to tell them how to behave...

Well, it was encoraging... Until it hit close to home.

I just lost a cousin to the virus. I didn't even know he had it.

His sister has it and his wife. I do not know how they are doing. They are older but were in great health. Hopefully, the ladies can kick this thing.

It's all about what's happening over there... until it hits your family and it has mine. It's getting close to yours, no matter where you are now. I am not sure we can stop this thing, only contain it. This is a beast that is coming in my opinion no matter what we do but at least we can limit the numbers so the hospitals don't get overwhelmed.

Have a good day today because you never know what tomorrow brings!

Anybody listen to podcast The Other Side form MS Today? Tate was on it this week. He started out sounding very informed and factual, but it seemed to digress quickly into politics. I think one of my favorite lines when he's talking about self cor teen: I guess if you have to spend 2 weeks in downtown jackson, the grounds of the gov. mansion is probably the place to do it.

Shelter in place is good idea anytime for Muderidian....

It's amazing how that place has degenerated since I left. It was a nice town when I was there, the 2nd largest city in the state. What caused the downfall?

We had a class reunion scheduled for mid-April in Meridian, but of course, it was canceled. Hopefully it can be rescheduled for the fall.

The Mayor did basically the same thing last Friday. Perhaps this drives home the point more.

The hospitalization count is encouraging. The tests aren’t to me because I think we’re only getting the results of the same number of tests each day. I’ve seen the number 185 as the capacity of the state labs, but I don’t know if that is true. My suspicion is that there is a huge backlog growing every day. Now that I’m typing it out, a bunch of people in the hospital my be COVID positive and waiting on test results so not included in the hospitalization count.

I'd say it's the most reliable graph in existence on this thing in MS. Of course we'll continue to get data on the older days until the tests themselves all show a same day positive or negative and people get tested at their first symptoms instead of the onset of complications. It's the first thing I go to every day. Another couple days without seeing a massive spike in hospitalizations would be tremendous. With it in a couple of nursing homes now though, that number is unfortunately going to go up IMO...

We've cleared 4500 tests in MS now per covid tracking project. I don't think there is a huge backlog, although some of the test numbers on certain days seem very questionable. The larger trend is 5-600 tests per day it seems. Certainly the hospitalization number on the DOH website is the most important number. But there's some positive looking metrics here at this point in time.
