What's closed in Mississippi? In Alabama, it's virtually everything - department stores, clothing stores, sports stores, all restaurants except drive-thru and curbside ... you name it ... except

Gun Stores and Liquor Stores. Why are those considered "essential"?

Huntsville police closed 20 stores today that were open in violation of the state mandate, and some of those were unnamed "big box" stores.

Liquor stores are being called essential all over the country. Why? Well do you really want the hospitals flooded with alcoholics going into withdrawals? What about the people that will create chaos because they can't get a drink? Better just to leave them open.

I suppose that in the end, that's the reason. It just seems strange. There are some gamblers that are addicted too, but casinos are closed.

People questioning that should google “delirium tremens” and think about dealing with that on top of a wide scale viral pandemic given how ubiquitous alcohol use and dependence is in our country.

I hope it's that and not some conspiracy nuts thinking your homes will be invaded. But shouldn't all gun owners have what they want and need now?

We have a lot of other rights that are being temporarily compromised right now in the name of health safety (a good thing, I think).

It'd literally look like The Purge in the streets if they banned gun stores being open right now.

Big box stores still seem open around here. Even ones that aren’t essential like a Walmart or Target. (I.e. Academy, Hobby Lobby)

As Charlton Heston often said when he was president of the NRA, "we must arm ourselves if we hope to defeat the apes."

If the liquor stores closed, they would all get broken into. Hell, people would drive their truck thru the front of the building to get the fix (I mean not me personally.....)

Not much at all is closed in MS. I guess restaurants (except for takeout).

I could see gun stores being open because of hunting for food could be claimed, though it's hardly a necessity for almost all.
Reality- close the gun stores and crazies could riot since they are already close to unhinged.
Conspiracies that not having access to ammo and more guns means the government is restricting rights would run rampant, even though there is no overall shortage of guns or ammo.

Liquor stores are open because people are sadly addicted to it and eliminating access would apparently be worse than placing people in danger of catching covid.

Do you have “medical” withdrawals when you can’t gamble?
And gamblers can still gamble even with casinos closed.

Yeah, because lawful gun owners are known to riot and cause mass hysteria in the streets. The fact that you really believe half the **** you post is astounding.

I know that a lot of the folks buying guns right now are panic buyers that haven't owned a firearm and are scared shitless of being robbed or having their homes looted. Some of the people panic buying guns are more scary than the thought of looters. A lot of them wouldn't know what to do in the situation that they need to use it. It's their right to own it, but it's scary none the less the amount of new gun owners out there with no background or safety training with a firearm. I'm more afraid of those folks becoming the robbers and the looters because they are panicking. The folks I'm not worried about are the ones have had firearms and are used to them and how to properly use one. Not against new gun owners at all. It's just alarming the amount of panic firearm buying going on.

Panic buyers are a good thing. I’ll be able to turn around and scoop up their guns cheap once this whole thing blows over and they feel the need to get rid of their scary guns.

I said 'crazies'
Here it is again.

...crazies could riot since they are already close to unhinged.

I did not predict lawful gun owners to riot in the streets, I predicted 'crazies' would.

There is a difference, at least to me there is.

This is actually quite hilarious. Sarcastic remarks and some seriously bent out of shape over apocalyptic events!

What's the argument that they ARE essential? I can't think of any.

Exactly. If you want to be safe when police reduce patrols because of a pandemic, you should live in an affluent neighborhood with enough political clout to actually get increased patrols when other areas are getting cut. What kind of government let's the poors have a way to access weapons for self defense when **** starts to go bad. Next thing you know, they'll be thinking their lives have just as much value as those of affluent people.

I think the liquor might would stay open to keep people from facing withdrawal or b/c of the tax revenue, but I think it's probably as easy as it would be hugely unpopular to close them and they're not much of a risk. You come sort of close to one person that hands you bottles in brown sacks. You throw away the brown sacks and wipe off the bottles with disinfectant and it's about as safe as anything you can do. Certainly as safe as doing pick up orders form restaurants or grocery stores, and if you can get the virus through the digestive track (which they don't know if you can but think it's unlikely since it's respiratory), it should be much safer than picking up to go food.
