After all of the teeth gnashing over the Kennedy center getting money in the CARES act... $25 million I believe. The Kennedy center is laying off the National Symphony Orchestra without pay or benefits. Turns out the Kennedy Center has a $100 million endowment too.

Someone should be imprisoned for this.. Probably should start with the **** that thinks giving up her $1.2 million salary until the crisis is over, is a sacrifice.

I don’t understand why there’s not more of an outrage for the house including a $47000 raise.

Horseshit! I read the House bill. It does include raises. The fact-check denial is a bunch of crap and even their explanation suggests they're FOS because they attempt to "justify" the additional salary as necessary for the house to function due to the virus.

Fact check goes on to say, "well it's in the Republican-held senate version too", yet they fail to mention it is there because the dems held the stimulus hostage, forcing the Repubs to hold their nose and swallow.

Pelosi & the Dems tried to pull the same **** last year, I believe in March, and had to pulll the bill back due to public outrage.

All the fact-check link states is that the house and senate allocated the same amount for the house in each bill, and that legislator salaries are funded through the treasury, not appropriations. Not sure we read the same article, also maybe chill a little.

Language in the house bill:
“For an additional amount for “Salaries and Expenses”, $25,000,000, to remain available until September 30, 2021, except that $5,000,000 shall remain available until expended, for necessary expenses of the House of Representatives to prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus, to be allocated in accordance with a spend plan submitted to the Committee on Appropriations of the House of Representatives by the Chief Administrative Officer and approved by such Committee: Provided, That such amount is designated by the Congress as being for an emergency requirement pursuant to section 251(b)(2)(A)(i) of the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985.“

Language from the senate bill:
“ HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
2 SALARIES AND EXPENSES
3 For an additional amount for ‘‘Salaries and Ex-
4 penses’’, $25,000,000, to remain available until September
5 30, 2021, except that $5,000,000 shall remain available
6 until expended, to prevent, prepare for, and respond to
7 coronavirus, domestically or internationally, to be allo-
8 cated in accordance with a spend plan submitted to the
9 Committee on Appropriations of the House of Representa-
10 tives by the Chief Administrative Officer and approved by
11 such Committee: Provided, That such amount is des-
12 ignated by the Congress as being for an emergency re-
13 quirement pursuant to section 251(b)(2)(A)(i) of the Bal-
14 anced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985.”

A breakdown of what it’s used for from the senate appropriations committee report.

“ U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES – $25 MILLION
SALARIES AND EXPENSES – $25 MILLION - Funding supports the House’s capability to telework, including the purchase of equipment and improvements to the network. Funding is also provided to reimburse costs for the staff of the House Child Care Center and House restaurant contracts.”

In other words, the Dem-controlled congress gets to decide what qualifies as "emergency requirement" in a time where we are all in an "emergency situation". This is nothing more than the pay-raise they wanted last March blanketed in enough prose to keep people from reading and/or realizing what it really is.

Senate bill was a compromise with the Dems. Do you really think Republicans in the Senate believe the Dem-controlled Congress needed & deserved a raise more than we citizens needed it?

"Provided, That such amount is designated by the Congress as being for an emergency requirement pursuant to section 251(b)(2)(A)(i) of the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985.“

Does this not imply that Congress, which is both the Dem-controlled House and the Reuplican-controlled Senate, has to designate the funds as for an emergency requirement? Legit question as a I don't know.

ETA: this is also included in the link WutheringDawg shared:

"
the 1989 Ethics Reform Act established an automatic adjustment formula to decide annual changes to lawmakers’ salaries. That automatic adjustment formula is “based on changes in private sector wages and salaries as measured by the Employment Cost Index,” according to the Congressional Research Service. The percentage increase cannot surpass that for federal employees who fall under the “General Schedule” classification. It automatically goes into effect unless Congress statutorily denies it, which it has done every year since 2009.

Democrats had considered in mid-2019 ending that decade-long hiatus and allowing the automatic pay increase to go through, but backed away from the idea following a backlash from within the party."

Again it’s not a raise. It’s for the same use as as the ten million for the Senate that is listed as “miscellaneous items.” There is no attack and counter here. Both bills provide funding for the House and senate.

Senate bill:
SENATE
CONTINGENT EXPENSES OF THE SENATE SERGEANT AT ARMS AND DOORKEEPER OF THE SENATE
For an additional amount for ‘‘Sergeant at Arms and Doorkeeper of the Senate’’, $1,000,000, to remain avail- able until expended, to prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus, domestically or internationally: Provided, That such amount is designated by the Congress as being for an emergency requirement pursuant to section 251(b)(2)(A)(i) of the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985.
MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
For an additional amount for ‘‘Miscellaneous Items’’,
$9,000,000, to remain available until expended, to pre- vent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus, domestically or internationally, subject to approval by the Committee on Appropriations of the Senate and the Senate Com- mittee on Rules and Administration: Provided, That such amount is designated by the Congress as being for an
22emergency requirement pursuant to section 23 251(b)(2)(A)(i) of the Balanced Budget and Emergency 24 Deficit Control Act of 1985.

House bill:
