Austin is a ghost town

I had to go to the pharmacy to get my prescriptions We moved to the other side of town in the past year and I have not changed pharmacies yet, so I got a good view of the north half of Austin and part of Round Rock. It was something that I have never experienced at all.

Sure there’s some cars out there but I just could not get over just how empty the roads were. Anyone who has driven here knows how famously bad the congestion is in every part of town. Folks are pretty much obeying the shelter in place order which impressed me as much as the lack of people did.

I am happy to report that the liquor stores are open. I was also able to get a top shelf margarita to go with my pick up order on the way home.

Some things Gladly just don’t change

in laws still live in far south Austin. FIL tried to go to Costco two days ago.... parking lot was overrun. I suppose everyone is congregated there, so nothing else has anyone.

you know Austin though, if you aren't standing in line to get into a place, it just isn't worth your time to go.

It's because of all my relatives that live there. They lean so far to the left the virus critters can't get a bead on them.

My cousin lives in Austin and is the asst superintendent of a country club down there. He has to keep a letter in his truck stating he is essential.

The wife has a tag for her badge to show she is a nurse and who to call to confirm.

Nunya, I went to Sams last Monday and the shelves were empty. They are only letting so many people in the grocery stores HEB and you have to wait in line till someone comes out. The restaurants are working different hours and using their staff to run out to go orders. Most of the eating spots are running some sort of special pricing.

There is a reason why I like Texas. The people are a bit different but it's a good different. Even the pinko commie liberal heathens downtown.

Texas is a puzzle to me with the very small number of reported infections.

The state has done a great job of sourcing the cases... I'm outside of Houston. We have 700k residents and have 23 cases and no deaths in our county. We are at about 32% occupancy in our hospital beds. We know that a majority of the Houston area cases started with one particular tent at the Houston Rodeo. Since that time, the sources have come from a variety of places but primarily from travelers from other parts of the world and country.

DFW area is still trending up. Very little testing still going on. To get a test in Dallas you have to have all three symptoms... Fever over 99.6, cough, and shortness of breath. Only 3000 reported tests in Dallas county so far.. many patients that Dr's think may have it are still being told to go home.

It has been nice and warm this week so hopefully that helps curb the spread.

This is from Scott Gottlieb, the previous head of FDA. He is CNBC's go to Doc and seems rational. Good info on his Twitter.

Has the DFW area pretty much shut down (only essential workers, etc.) or is it business as usual?

Most counties have put in a pretty standard shelter in place. My county is in some kind of weird "Stay home unless it's essiential. All jobs are essential, so go if you have one, go get a job if you don't... Support your local businesses, by patronizing them, but don't leave your house, unless of course you have a job interview or you just need to stretch your legs order." County Judge that issued it is getting roasted. The cities are coming back in to fix it.

The City of Austin was who made me realize that the Coronavirus needs to be taken seriously. When they cancelled SXSW on March 6th it was a real holy **** moment.

Maintaining greens and the grounds. Let the greens go and the course will be shot.

I immediately questioned why an east super is essential too. Then I thought about the grass and figured that's the reason, but that's hardly essential still. If the course suffers, it would be another cost of the shutdown, just like bars, restaurants, barbers, clothing stores, etc.

Not to mention, there is a head super- he can cut the grass.

But hey, not much surprises me on these lists I'd essential workers

The courses here host countless events for the PGA and other tours and tournaments and bring in a lot of tourism dollars.

Did they shut down ground care at MSU and the athletic fields? It's just grass on a campus, football, baseball field, etc.

If they didn't they should have.

Hah, similar here. Sleeping in this morning...cell phones went off with the emergency alerts at 8am for the “stay at home” order.
Honestly, it was somewhat surreal.
But, thanks be to whoever...the ABC stores aren’t under the order. I guess that’s probably smart. I wonder what it would be like if people couldn’t get a little toddy for three weeks being locked up

Oh, I didnt realize the other poster's cousin is an asset sup at a course that hosts a PGA tournament. That's for that clarification.
...or maybe it isn't known where the guy works since that wasnt mentioned.

It was just a surprise to see a course asst sup is an essential position.
Heck, I have an essential position and that's surprising to me as well.

The amount of tourism dollars is irrelevant. The ncaa tournament didnt happen. The Olympics won't happen. Heck, the PGA isnt playing right now(so that tourism concern isnt exactly part of the argument).

I'm not saying it's bad that an asset sup is vital, it was just a surprise.
Again, have the head man ride in lawnmowers.

So how many people would be necessary to keep essential grass cut? Is that all that needs to be done just cut grass? Is the staff working on reduced hours with split shifts to accommodate social distancing guidelines? Yes protecting the assets of the course be it a muni, private, or resort is an actual process. Several people in the turf industry are still working, but with reduced hours, and are performing only the minimal task needed to get the job done. Don't hate on something you don't know, but then again if you did that your post on this site would much less!
