I have a friend that is in charge of the corona virus floor at a hospital on Long Island. He confirmed with me last week they were administering it.

From what I have seen in reports, some hospitals will administer it when it's absolutely necessary. Hopefully if it truly is working the FDA will give the okay on it in a more liberal way.

To be serious about your question is the FDA or Fauci won’t come out and definitely say yes it is working just yet until they get better confirmed data over the next week or so. Liability and all, and so people just won’t run back out there Helier smelter tomorrow.

I think we need to slow down spread and also give these generics manufacturers time to make enough of it to get ahead of the spread. Remember it’s not a cure, but is shown to stem the symptoms. An ICU doctor from NYC said they had 100 patients on this cocktail and all 100 were improving or had recovered and tested negative.

It's working! I've got a sister in San Fran who's an ER nurse and a buddy in PCB that is an ER doc. Both agree this, with a combo of Z-pak, is working quite well and healing folks. Stay tuned tomorrow. We need a glimmer of light!!

From what I can gather doing a quick google search, there is anecdotal evidence stating it's been helpful. In terms of statistical significance, I haven't seen where there is enough data yet to determine whether it's outperforming no treatment and/or standard treatment. It could be that I'm not looking in the right place. Pharma companies are, however, donating in bulk. People need hope if for no other reason than it's (generally) correlated with better treatment outcomes (not sure if true for coronavirus however). This is providing some hope.

Do you have a source on that? I would all be pleased to high heavens if it were true that this was a useful treatment, but everything I've read has said to tap the brakes.

Some criticism of of the French study that it left out 4 people who got sicker (1 death): https://twitter.com/MicrobiomDigest/status/1241429544847863808 (https://pubpeer.com/publications/3B1F9EAD4982C64445A60F5E83CCFE)

Dr. Fauci stating: "The information that you're referring to is anecdotal. It wasn't done in a controlled clinical trial, so you can't make a definitive statement about it." https://twitter.com/CBSEveningNews/status/1241041232421433345?s=20

It is true that New York and some other hospitals such as the University of Washington are starting trials. We should get an answer soon either way. Let's all pray it is effective.

It's not proven per Fauchi and others. But, NY about to give it a huge test run.

"Proven" by his standards is something like a year of clinical trials... It could reduce the death toll of this to flu-like levels and still not be "proven" by clinical terms.

It's not a cure, but if it halves duration and cuts down on the death/complications total, maybe even to a level we can deem "acceptable", we can all go back to work and live with this for a year or two until there is a vaccine. Yes, I know it's wishful thinking on my behalf, but honestly if we don't get back going within a couple of months at most, I won't have a company to go back to.

And it's still not proven to work. It's only showed limited signs of being helpful. I received information on it from a top health official. Trust me, it's got to be tested more. And that's exactly what NY is doing. We'll know in about 2-3 weeks.

I don’t think anyone is saying it’s a cure but we cannot wait a year for a vaccine or more “stringent” controlled trial to slow this down. When people are saying they are seeing great results, and it’s usually that 10-20% that are serious, that’s enough for any of us to say give me that! And the FDA is allowing the use of it as compassionate for these folks.

It also lead to a fatality in the French trial, but that was left out of the data. There are reasons it takes time. Sure, this needs to be super fast tracked, but what is happening is that anecdotal evidence from some random internet dude's sister's boyfriend who is janitor across the street from a doc in the box in NYC heard people are getting better and we should come off social distancing in 8 days and SAVE THIS ECONOMY TRUMP2020 OWNTHELIBS WHOOOHOOO MERICA MERICA MERICA

There is some hope here that it helps at least a certain segment, but we have to keep fighting with proven measures to slow it down until it's proven. Whatever happens, we already know it's not a 100% cure.

There is optimism for this drug. Back in 2005, a group showed this drug inhibited SARS-Cov1. Since this SARS virus binds the same receptor, there is real hope the mechanism of action is the same. As some have mentioned, there is field stories of it working. Fauci just cannot say it until a proper clinical study is conducted. He honestly can’t say it until he gets significant safety data showing it does not make it worse. As someone mentioned, the study published from China said it showed promise, but the paper really lacked data. That’s why this drug has been at the “compassionate use stage”.

There is hope. There are 41 potential vaccines, 2 in phase one trials. Some of the vaccines may be universal against coronaviruses, not just this one strain (if they work). There are several potential other drugs that showed promise against SARS-Cov1 that may work against this virus.

We really, really need time. Not just to slow the spread nationally, but we need to flatten all the little local curves so clusters don’t get overwhelmed. We need some time to confirm it’s not just good for compassionate use, but safe for milder cases. That’s the hold up on more liberal use so far.

As a provider, I’m obviously intrigued by it. But it ain’t tamiflu where u can just call your doc and ask for a script to be safe. It can cause legitimate arrhythmia and retinal issues. The arrhythmia concerns are increased when combined with a number of medications. I don’t see a role for it right now outside of sicker hospital patients. But again, it raises some optimism. The combination of a decent treatment and rapid testing would be game changers.

some states are asking pharmacists to not honor prescriptions written for off-label prescribing to account for the shortage. the hope is that it is more readily available as a treatment for covid if it gets to that. if the rx doesnt use the diagnosis of malaria, dont fill. basically, prophylactic plaquenil is cut out.

Hope it's the miracle cure we need, but we have to keep in mind that almost everyone recovers from this disease anyway and not to attribute recoveries to the drug without sufficient proof of a causal link. Luckily the researchers know what they're doing.

So also a vaccine for a percentage of cases of the common cold?

“Yeah this is Dr. Rosenpenis, Rosenpenis Clinic, calling in prescriptions for me, Mrs. Rosenpenis, and our 5 Rosenpenis kids: hydroxychloroquine 200, one tablet five times daily, #150, prn refills, my wife will be there in 5 minutes to pick those up, thanks.”

Yes if it worked. My understanding is that it was originally developed targeting SARS-COV1/MERS, research money dried up and then this outbreak brought it back into development. The universal I am aware of is pre-clinical though, so not sure how close it is to actual testing in humans.

Unfortunately, when I think of cold, I think of rhinoviruses. If I recall correctly, there are over 100 of these that can infect humans and several other viruses that can cause cold/flu like illness.

The drug is being administered to those who are near death and are given a "right to trial", meaning you have a choice of dying or trying a drug that might save your life, or may do nothing to prevent death and the virus runs its course.

Those that received the medicine and died did so bc they received it too late, not from the drug itself. They died bc their lungs stopped working. The overdoses were from people who SELF-ADMINISTERED the drug. Water can kill you if you drink too much.

Mocking those with hopes that their loved ones don't succumb to failing lungs with your personal political bias is the 2nd biggest tragedy of the COVID-19 outbreak.

What I am mocking is the troves of alt-right nut jobs who are proclaiming this is a miracle cure that will open the country in a matter of days spreading misinformation and false hope started by the president instead of listening to career scientists and medical professionals.

The over exuberance of this particular treatment without clinical evidence has lead to a shortage of medicine to people who need it, overdoses overseas, a couple who took another form to kill one and incapacitate the other and troves of people who feel like they can stop social distancing because the miracle cure is here.

We need hope. I hope as much as anyone else this is a miracle cure, but the science doesn’t support it yet and the misinformation being spread is dangerous.

Question. If you were in bed, in critical condition with this awful virus with no other known/approved effective medication available at this time...would you request this treatment ? God forbid this happen to you or anyone else.

dude read the posts. It is being used in compassionate care for some of those in the 10 maybe 20% of total cases that become severe to critical and that percentage of people is where the deaths are coming from. I was saying folks that have gotten the drug are in that class and the results are great. I’m not going to run out, and I’m sure most people wouldn’t that test positive with mild to moderate symptoms and demand to take it. And 99% of doctors wouldn’t write it right now. It’s hope for those people where there is no hope.

If I remember correctly a doctor from Lennox Hill hospital in NYC said over the weekend that they had put 100 people on this over the previous two weeks that were considered serious or critical and I believe he said all 100 had either started improving or recovered.
