I won't comment on, "best", but will add that improvements in available HD shotgun ammo have made even .410 shotguns very viable, and for some a good choice due to much lower recoil. Lower recoil can mean quicker, more accurate additional shots. If you check out some expert videos on this, you may find a .410, though not able to put out as much lead as a 12 gauge, does offer plenty of stopping power in the tight center group. Much of the additional lead the 12 throws out spreads out, inflicitng addtional pain, but not addtional stopping power.

Many old-schoolers might dismiss the .410 out-of-hand due to perception based on performance prior to the newer shells designed for HD.

If you already own a shotgun, I'd suggest you first look into what it can do with the best HD shells you can now get.

Kel-Tec double magazine tube. Think it will hold 15 3” buckshot or 30 of the self defense rounds

As an old-schooler myself, I only considered the 12 gauge when I bought my HD shotgun. But with some after-the-fact research, I'd probably have gone with the .410 for the reasons you mentioned: lower recoil, more maneuverable, and less unintended penetration. I solved the recoil and penetration concerns with mini shells and an insert to prevent jamming.

I have a Shockwave that I’m happy with.

I like the look of the shockwave. If your goal is to scare the **** out of a home invader, it's a good choice. But you really lose accuracy if that's important to you.

^^ this. Don't waste your money on a new 870. They aren't worth a crap anymore.

Yeah, their quality control has gone to hell. They don't make 'em like they used to. For the price and quality, it's hart to beat the Mossberg 500 or 590.

Yeah I’m more about the effect. If I’m in that close range I’m gonna hit something.

I have a Judge that shoots both .45 and .410. It is loud AF.

Benelli Nova. Not super expensive and easy to take apart and clean. I’ve had one for years that I use for hunting and it’s solid.

Be careful if it just has a pistol grip, no full stock. Saw a guy split his lip shooting buckshot for the first time. Recoiled his hand right up into his mouth.

Double barrel..pump they may have to look twice....double they only have to look once to know their **** is done if you pull the trigger/triggers.

Nothing wrong with a double barrel, but there's absolutely no mistaking the sound of racking a shell into a pump. Mossberg 20 gauge, matte black finish with a pistol grip. Keep it right close to my bed along with a Judge with .410 slugs.

I have two shotguns but have NO CLUE what you mean by HD. Please enlighten the uninitiated, like me.

ETA: Nevermind. Just read the "Home Defense" in the topic. I didn't want people to think that I thought there were high definition shotguns available!

12 gauge loaded with tactical loads. 9 .32cal. projectiles at @1100 ft/second with one pull of the trigger. Mossberg 88. 18.5 inch barrel. Removed shoulder shoulder stock and replaced with a pistol grip. Also mounted a very good light on the barrel that also projects a red dot. The light illuminates everything, the dot tells me where the majority of the projectiles will strike.
Don't enter my house unannounced nor with bad intentions.

To go along with the pistol thread, what is the best home defense shotgun?

I was told years ago that a 20 gauge shotgun would be best. Lighter and more maneuverable for the weaker people in the house to handle if necessary. Will still get the job done and less likely to go through walls and hit a family member. I was also told the pump action may get them running away without having to shoot.

A Remington youth model 20 gauge pump. Small, cheap, effective. Plus if you have kids, they can learn to shoot skeet with it.

Pump action. Then you probably won't even need the trigger.
Why would I rack a perfectly good buckshot out on the floor just to replace it with another, besides it could cause a potential tripping hazard?
