In 2008 or 2009 it infected 60 Million Americans, killed 12,000 of us. Did not see the likes of panic then?

The stats don't lie, but you'll never stop the doomsday prophets and their armageddon scenario.

Perhaps there should have been a more active push for increased hygiene and sanitation policies back then. Perhaps there should be increased policies every year during flu season.
Maybe this will start that trend and the common flu will affect less people in coming years.

Just because something wasnt done 12 years ago doesnt mean it shouldnt be done now.

Also- stop the comparison, its lazy and has been done thousands of times on social media already. Google the differences. There are dozens of current articles that detail the differences.

You tipped you hand by calling it the China H1n1 flu. It originated in the US. Are you going to post the false graphic circulating around Facebook too? If 60 MM people get this, at least 600k will die. I don’t think either are going to happen because we are putting things in place to prevent it. When or if that happens and only a couple of thousand people die you can gloat that it was all an overreaction. I’ll take that over the other outcome.

Instead of taking the necessary steps to protect themselves and others today's society feels panicking and screaming is the appropriate action. It's embarrassing how people are behaving

And, for God's sake, quit going to Facebook and Joe Rogan for your medical advice.

Yes...I would line to see a link to any facts about H1N1 starting in the US. It was in China. And the only stats that matter are how many people it is killing. When it out places the seasonal flu I will take it seriously. Or malaria. Or about 20 other viral diseases and illnesses that are more deadly.

Sorry, I mis-read, I interpreted you as saying Covid-19 originated here. Thanks for the link.

You simply CANNOT compare the death totals between past outbreaks and Covid-19. Covid-19 is STILL ramping up. The others are completed. Covid-19 could very easily kill 50X your 12,000 swine flu total if we just go about our daily lives as if nothing has changed.

I hate repost something I posted Friday night but this is why no the deaths are not all that matter.

https://forums.sixpackspeak.com/sho...l-we-learn-from-this-or&p=1742457#post1742457

I think to many are misunderstanding the reasons for all the cancellations and school closings. It’s not because this is some overtly deadly bug. Most people that get it will recover easily.

The problem is that it is many, many, many more times contagious than the flu and a lot of those older Americans who contract it will need hospitalization. There are currently only about 1 million hospital beds in a country of 330 million. If we continued to congregate in the thousands the virus has proven that it will spread very quickly. Most of those people will be fine. But it will send enough to the ER to overload an already overloaded system. If you’ve ever had to go to the ER in Tupelo and had to wait 2 hours to be seen then you know what I’m talking about. Once ER’s and hospitals become swamped what happens to the heart attack, stroke, and car wreck victims? Where do they go? How soon will they be seen? And in time to save THEIR lives?

That’s the sound reasoning behind most of these cancellations/postponements. Yes the same number of people will eventually get the virus whether we cancel or not. But canceling spreads the cases out over a longer period of time allowing hospitals to adequately deal with those that need hospitalization from the virus while also being able to handle normal emergency care. Sometimes it’s better to just rip off the bandaid all at once, but only if you’re prepared to handle what’s under said bandaid. The US is prepared to treat and hospital 500k-1,000,000 of those most severely afflicted with virus, but only if spread out over a month or two, not all once.

The threat isn’t that millions will die from this virus, it’s how many people that have other emergencies won’t get care in time because of the potentially full hospitals. Then when people feel helpless because they can’t get care for their loved ones they get desperate, that’s when social order begins to breakdown.

This may not be a popular opinion but it is the truth. If the cancellations have the desired effect and renders the virus manageable then this will seem like it was over hyped and overdone. But it will only seem that way because the virus and it’s collateral damage will have far fewer victims than it might have. And that’s the whole point.

H1N1 vs Coronavirus
1 in 5000 chance of death vs a 1 in 50 chance of death
Complete numbers vs Just getting started
Vaccine vs No vaccine
Symptoms almost immediately vs Symptoms don't show for days but can still be transmitted
Taken seriously immediately vs Fake news less than a week ago
Flu like symptoms vs bad cases require a respirator and we don't have enough to save everyone

Perhaps in 2021 we can look back on the Covfefe 19 virus and compare it to the China H1N1 Swine Flu and see who WINS!!!

Anyway If I am going to stay away from idiots Obviously that means a good amount of social media distancing from this place. I guess that's good news for yall

Entire countries are shutting down including our own. People are hearing from medical experts all iver about how dangerous this is. We are way past any panic being media induced.

Yep. It's amazing. I can't decide if it's mostly just a lack of critical thinking skills....or they are just guilible and getting bad info.

But to not understand what's going is pretty amazing. To still compare this to H1N1 is laughable.

Do these people think CNN somehow tricked Europe into shutting down? Do these people think other countries governments are making these decisions based off of......media? That's so absurd it doesn't deserve a conversation.

Why are countries shutting down? It's not the damn media you stupid stupid people. The dude that started this thread....lol....not a smart person. imagine thinking this was some great thread or idea.

The more cases come out, the less 'dangerous' it is. Numerator growing slowly, denominator growing quickly. You don't need a medical expert to tell you this. They shouldn't be assessing the numbers anyway, they should be providing care.

Nobody cares about the shut down. I care about the idiot hoarders who are spurred on by PANIC.

The death rate is a LONG way from being accurate. Stop reporting it like it's fact. It's well known that there aren't enough tests worldwide.

A stitch in time saves nine.

You could make the argument then that just all elderly/immuno-compromised should be quarantined, since others who get it will not really be impacted.

the hoarders are not the big issue. Its not nearly the most important issue. Lives and the economy are much much more important. The big issue will be the hospitals being overrun because we are not shutting down fast enough.

My pantry is always stocked anyway.
