Still a lot but seems to be settling at .6 percent.

For 100,000,000 people that would be 600,000 (still very significant) but not the 2.5 to 3 percent at first thought.

This Michelob Ultra Flu is going to follow the same damn path that swine flu followed. As more and more cases are reported due to testing becoming more available, the death rate will continue to drop and people will feel more and more foolish for panicking over a severe cold.

It’s like a severe cold if you are young and healthy, not so much if you are over 60 and have health problems. But hey, who needs their parents and grandparents, we can always get new ones. Oh wait, no we can’t.

You really think COVID-19 just hit the States? With the level of global travel we have in 2020, this crap has been here for a couple months already, but the media wasn’t telling you to panic then, so you didn’t panic. Even with elderly patients, there is over a 90% survival rate. Stop acting like we are battling airborne Ebola.

You better watch out....using common sense like that will get you harassed beyond belief on this board ....if you aren't thinking this is worst event in the history of the earth you are just in corona denial....

This isn’t ebola, there weren’t millions of people flying in and out of three of the poorest countries on earth. And hey maybe those 9 out of ten elders that survive will include your family. Since you’re talking out your *** I’ve got one grandparent left and a dad that has really shown his age the last year or two, you can take that 10% chance that I’ll get to keep them if they contract it and shove it up you know where.

Your baseline explanation seems to be that everyone is stupid- except for you, who has figured it out. Maybe this is true. However, it might be prudent to also consider (and prepare for) the case that this might NOT be true.

A severe cold, which causes pneumonia for older people and people with health problems often resulting in death every year.

It looks like China is already coming out of it and has had 3100 deaths... The seasonal Flu has killed 22,000 in the US this Flu Season, 36 Million Flu cases and 370,000 Flu Hospitalizations so far this US Flu season.....

Do you believe those numbers? I don’t believe for a second China is accurately reporting cases or fatalities.

China had MANY more deaths from this than 3100....and no I can't prove it. Have been reading and watching since it started though. Many reports of people dying from pneumonia shipped straight to the cremation facilities with Pneumonia listed as cause of death. This report was from on the ground Chinese. Cremation facilities have been overloaded and running nonstop. There is a reason the Chinese blockaded their own people in wuhan and wouldn't let them out for any reason....and it wasn't to avoid spreading something no more dangerous than the common cold.
I can't prove any of this but certain websites like zero hedge have been posting reports from within china since this began. Reports with actual chinese people with many pictures and video to prove. I would love for all this to be a hoax and to be wrong. I would love to stand up and apologize to the world for being wrong and making people needlessly worry.

Let's throw out China stats then...

156400 world wide - 80995 China = 75405 cases
5833 worldwide deaths - 3085 China = 2748 deaths

World minus China = 75405 cases, 2747 deaths, .036 death rate

China = 80995 cases, 3085 deaths, .038 death rate

The death rate is not the only metric. Its the hospitalizations for those that dont die. Once the hospital system is overwhelmed the. People with all illnesses are in trouble.

Your elderly relatives are more likely to die of a fall or automobile accident. Even more likely to die of cancer or heart disease. I lost both parents and a grandfather to cancer. Lost another grandfather and grandmother to a heart attack. I don’t see people in the media burning the world down every day about the dangers of eating a steak. No country wide bans on beef or cigarettes that I’m aware of. Stop acting like this virus is the bubonic plague.

My wife works in the medical field in Starkville. For months they’ve been seeing patients with flu-like systems that tested negative for flu. She’s been talking about how strange this flu season has been all year. Coronavirus has been here. It’s not killing off our population.

Yes. It also a known quantity with a vaccine, sufficient testing, a shorter incubation period, and a slower spread rate. And its also one reason our hospital capacity is used up. So if another is added...

but my main point was to highlight an egregiously bad analogy

36-55K (CDC estimate) people died from the flu this year. Were their lives not worth a nationwide quarantine?

Every leader of every country of every political stripe is wrong. All public health officials are wrong. All the leading epidemiologists in this country and others are wrong.

See my post above. We are doing everything we can to fight the flu each year and carry on normally. Know quantity.

now imagine is the standard flu showed up for the first time this year, no one was vaccinated, we couldnt test for it, it showed no symptoms for twice as long as it does and spread roughly twice as fast. Thats horrifying.

No, he’s not smarter than everyone else. But he IS thinking for himself. Most of those people you list are mere sheep, just like the rest of the population - acting on fear, panic, lawsuits, etc.

Nothing wrong with being responsible but still thinking for yourself. This board is full of people posting links and saying it’s gospel because well, the link said so. Too much information out there so you have to wade through it.

There's a pretty clear difference between thinking for yourself and ignoring the expertise of professionals based on google searches and a gut feeling. The latter is how people become anti-vaxxers.

Let me add the death rate being 10x what the flu is currently. And and our systems having no previous immunity. Sad that some people still don't see the seriousness of this virus.

Well...

I never thought Id have to ask someone this but- do you know heart disease.... (is) not contagious?

I see a lot of obese kids with obese parents. Where do they get it from?
Point being no one is freaking out about heart disease and it will kill way more than coronavirus.

Except the ER’s and hospitals are always at close to capacity because of the normal flu season, now you’re throwing a different virus out there that is much more contagious and deadly than the flu. Now you have hospitals having to choose who gets care and who doesn’t. Then we haven’t even mentioned those that have car wrecks, heart attacks, and strokes. What do they do when hospitals are full. Do they get seen? In time to save their lives?

No in a vacuum this virus isn’t that bad, but we don’t live in a vacuum. We thankfully do live in the greatest country on earth but one with an already over worked healthcare system. If you’ve been blessed enough to have avoided most Dr offices and hospitals your whole life then it’s an easy mess to miss. But for those such as myself that have been in and out of them enough to last 100 lifetimes we know the stress that was on the system before you go and throw a pandemic in on top of it.

Closing things will likely still mean the same number of ppl will get sick with this, but this will spread the numbers out over a longer period of time allowing the healthcare system to manage the problem and still handle normal emergencies.

You know if I’m wrong it’s gonna hurt financially for a while, but what if YOU’RE wrong?

I should’ve thrown some sarcastrics on that

Hereditary and contagious are not the same thing. Another thing i never thought id have to explain.

But I was trying to make the point that kids learn to be obese from their parents (why I called it contagious). Obesity leads to heart disease. Heart disease will kill way more people in the US this year than corona will kill around the world. The risk of heart disease can be greatly reduced by making better choices, and yet no one is freaking out about it and demanding people self quarantine themselves from overeating and not exercising. Why such drastic differences in the way we treat these diseases?

BECAUSE ITS NOT CONTAGIOUS. There is plenty of awareness about the dangers of heart disease. But if someone wants to make that choice to eat poorly and not exercise its their choice. But when they make that choice they cannot impact other people.

on the flip side, if someone wants to ignore corona warnings it impacts lots and lots of people

Father who has the heart attack at 50 and leaves three obese kids behind with an obese wife and no means to provide for them because he couldn’t get life insurance due the amount amount of food he consumed doesn’t have an impact on others? Obesity is a taught and learned behavior. It’s also a very preventable. If it was prevented, it would free up at least 75% of the hospital beds in this country. Why are you not freaking out about it? It’s way more deadly than coronavirus and flu combined.
