I'm somewhat surprised that the state hasn't made a statement about the schools. Seems like each school district is making their own decisions.

Our illustrious guvnah is forcing the locals to take all the heat for the school closure decision. And, of course, after normalcy returns, he will claim success for "strong, calm leadership."

I'm not sure he can force them to close. I know the state ed department can't.

Are there powers afforded to LA and AL governors that are not afforded to ours?

If the governor orders it then it happens. Health Department said close school, Ed Department punted to individual districts which is the worst idea.

This seems like a decision that should be made at the State level. It's going to really confusing for parents if we're going district by district.

My kids school is only closed until wednesday. All the people who caught it on spring break wont have shown symptoms or been tested by then

The health department has not said to close schools

“ The MSDH requires schools to consult with their county health department and the MSDH to determine when it is appropriate to close a school. State law does not give the MDE or the Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) the authority to close schools statewide.

The MSDH has not recommended at this time that schools should close.”

It’s up to the district and the governor at this point. Districts are worried about 17ing test scores and not child safety. There’s no reason to not close every school in the state to not risk it spreading. 17ing idiots.

My kids are in the rankin County School District and it seems like they always wait till the last minute to announce anything. They are supposed to go back Monday but who knows at this point.

If it makes anyone feel better, Tennessee hasn’t closed all schools. It seems to be on an individual district basis here as well.

My wife was telling the state lab is not even open this weekend. So, hospitals have someone blood test positive and send to the state lab for confirmation and it will sit till Monday. Expect a big jump in the confirmed cases early next week.

Maybe it’s just me but seems like the confirming lab should be open right now.

Yes I was about to say the districts in Tennessee are all making their own decisions

This is correct. The MDE, by law, is not allowed to force schools to close. It has to come from the local school districts OR by declaration of the governor or president. They can certainly RECOMMEND that all schools close.

MAIS has recommended that schools close week of March 16th and it will be a week-to-week monitoring from there. All MAIS activities are canceled for this coming week.

You might want to re-check. At the Guvnuh suggestion, it now looks like schools are closing and churches are going to online services. A bunch of schools recently announced.

What a **** show... leaving this to local school districts to decide was laughable. You think the superintendent of tiny little Xyz,MS School District is equipped with the knowledge regarding how to respond to a global pandemic?

Who the 17 did we elect as governor?

This seems like a decision that should be made at the State level. It's going to really confusing for parents if we're going district by district.

Alabama schools statewide will close after Wednesday classes (the extra time presumably to let working parents find childcare), but some districts have chosen to close immediately. Some districts were starting spring break Monday anyway, but locally I think it's two weeks off yet.
