The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly offered Dak Prescott a contract that averages $33 million and includes $105 million in guaranteed money, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News.
Watkins reports that Prescott’s agent met with the Cowboys for a second time following the NFL Scouting Combine, but noted the team is in a holding pattern with Prescott and Amari Cooper until NFL players finalize their vote on the proposed new CBA, which will be done by March 12.
The average of $33 million isn’t any different than what’s previously been reported. However, the $105 million in guarantees is a new wrinkle. Chances are, that figure still won’t be enough to get Prescott to sign a long-term deal, however, given his comments about setting a new market last year.
At this rate, it seems inevitable that the Cowboys will end up using the exclusive franchise tag to secure Prescott (worth roughly $33 million, ironically), which would also give them more time to hammer out a long-term contract.

I’d read from a Dallas reporter that the years is the sticking point, Dak wants 4 so he gets another payday, Dallas wants in the 7 range. Which makes sense, Dak wants to maximize the years he has left after after being the biggest bargain in sports the last 4 years, and Dallas knows that an upper echelon QB at $33M 5-6 years from now is a bargain. I think when it comes to the nitty gritty he’d take $33M for 4 years with $100Mish guaranteed but at 7 years it’s gonna take $36-37M with another $25M or so guaranteed.

I know I’m counting other folks money but when you’re broke it gets old counting your own.

The issue has never really been money. Dallas is trying to lock him into a long contract (8 years). That would cost him a ton of money. Dak wants a 4 year deal.

Yeah the number of years matters and that is never reported

Yep. Jerry is probably offering 6 or 7 years for $33 million.

And for seemingly the millionth time, even $33 million for 4 years is less than he is worth, as it is less than the amounts for both Wentz and Goff who are objectively inferior QB’s.

Pretty much correct, but 7 years would take more than $36-$37. More like $40+. Today’s $33 million is going to be $45 million per year in 4 years or less with the new CBA.

Seems like it is about money. I really don't understand why 8 years at 33 million with 105 guaranteed is not enough. I love Dak and I really hope that he and his agent don't outsmart themselves. 105 million guaranteed should set anyone up for the rest of their life with no problem.

Not saying that Jones wasn’t aiming for that before, but there’s no way that this current $105M guarantee is over 8. Wilson’s signed a 4 year deal worth $140m with $107 guaranteed, so that tells me that this new offer can’t be for more than 4-5 years tops

Because 4 years from now, that will be a below average contract. It’s a good, fair deal for about 3-4 years, and then Dak gets screwed for 3-4 years.

Well 4 years from now $33M will be middle of the league and bottom third in 6 years. Yea seems like it should be enough and that leaves money on the table for pass catchers but it isn’t always so easy. I know the NFL union is not near the force that the MLB union is but I’m sure they’re pressuring him to get the top dollar to set precedent for those coming behind him.

How does the guarantee have anything to do with the length of the deal? Jerry could offer that guaranteed amount on a 6 year deal, and the end result is the same as Wilson where the majority (if not all) of the guaranteed money would be paid out in the first 4 years, except Dallas would have two extra years of control. Why wouldn’t Jerry want that? Obviously Dak wouldn’t, which is why they haven’t come to an agreement and are reported to not even agree on this deal with the $105 million guarantee.

Also, check out Zeke’s extension that made his deal 8 years / $103 million, but only $50 million is guaranteed (again, only about 4 years worth). It is absolutely Jerry’s calling card to maximize the number of years the team has control above all else.

Is this a serious question? Because if the $105M guarantee is over anything more than 4-5 years, it’s not even remotely competitive with the contracts that QBs have been getting during the last year.

Goff got $110 guaranteed over 4 years, Wilson got $107 over 4 years, and Wentz got $108 over 4. If Jerry offered $105 over a 6 year deal, he’s wasting everyone’s time including his own

6 years should be in the $140M range as far as guaranteed. If Jerry wants to sign Dak and leave some on the bone then I’d consider 4 years at $33-34 but guarantee 90-95% of it. Gives both sides more flexibility to reassess things 4 years from now. I think his agent would advise him to take $3-4M less per/ if it’s almost completely guaranteed. But I’m not an agent, I just play one on the internet.

You answered your own question. If Jerry offered $105 guaranteed over anything longer than 4 years (even if it was only 5 years), he wasted everyone’s time including his own. But there are a lot of indications pointing to him doing exactly that for the majority if not the entirety of these contract negotiations.

This whole thing is as simple as this....4 year deal, somewhere between $33-$36 million per year, somewhere between $100-$110 million guaranteed. Move the variables to agreeable values for both sides. All that puts Dak somewhere between the Goff / Wentz deals and the Wilson deal, which is where he absolutely deserves to be. If Jerry at least agreed to that base structure and the only points of dispute were the annual salary and guaranteed money, they would have reached an agreement a long time ago. But Jerry won’t 17ing do it.

Dallas Cowboys is the richest company in professional sports, that includes any Premier League soccer teams. Why should Dak take below his market value?

Part of this nonsense is the fact of Wentz and Goff's contracts. I like Wentz but he has not been healthy nearly as often has he as been hurt. Goff looked like a total bust most of last season. He has never looked particularly good either. Taking into account Wentz's availability concerns, neither are in the same stratosphere with Wilson, yet they are paid like they are.

Dak is good, I would make him a franchise QB, but the Rams have set the market for a QB and an RB way too high with two terrible contracts. It's a tough spot to be in if you have a star at either position, and the Cowboys have both.

The Cowboys should have stood firm with Zeke and saved their money for Dak. Long term, he'll be a much more valuable player.

Then sit out. Demand a trade publically. He is literally not under contract at the moment. He played for an extreme discount every single snap he has ever taken. Each snap could be his last.

Also note, asshats like Zeke get an extension with 3 years left on his initial deal where he was making 15 times daks pay right out of the gate. Zeke is not going to be the difference maker, Dak will be the one that gets them there or doesnt get them there.
