It’s just really sad to see what Jackson has come to. The coliseum should have been torn down years ago. I attended very many rock concerts there in the eighties but now they can’t hardly get a concert there. Now they are getting ready to open a new state of the art trademart added onto the coliseum which is ridiculous having to do that. They just keep on putting lipstick on that pig. I just hope one day some smart/rich business marketers will build a new arena over in flowood or somewhere in that area. This part of the state needs it badly.

I think something in Jackson along Lakeland Drive with about 12-14000 seats for concerts and 8-9000 for sports events would be great. Say, instead of moving the zoo to the Lefleurs Bluff, build an brand spanking new arena. Keep the MSFGC for all the Dirt Floor events.

You can get a lot of big name acts to play in quality modern arenas with 12.5 to 14,000 seats counting the floor.

Won't happen now that Brandon has the amphitheater

For what has to be at least the 10,000th time, Jackson does not own and has no control over anything on the fairgrounds. That is all state property. That is Mississippi's coliseum, not Jackson's. Now, if you want to say that the state won't put money into fixing it or tearing it down and rebuilding because of the prejudice against the city of Jackson, you would be a lot closer to the truth.

Its primary use is the rodeo and state fair and events like that. Concerts and sports are secondary. So your little virtue signaling crusade there is also misplaced.

And if you've been around the coliseum lately you'll see they are putting money into it.

Spot on.

Also, if the City wants a new arena, there is nothing stopping them from doing what other cities do, and figure out a way to finance it themselves. The arena’s biggest challenge would be drawing events to a place that’s been under the radar for concerts for so long, compounded by not having an anchor tenant. The city would have to manage that event schedule. It could be done, but it would be an uphill climb and would take good management—but based on the convention center precedent, something I’m not sure the city could do successfully.

The city has a good spot to put an arena—tear down Smith Wills and put the arena there.

I would imagine that an air conditioned venue run correctly could be ver competitive with the BA.
Kudos to those in charge of the amphitheater. They are bringing in quality names for the limited times that could be scheduled due to weather.

And are still limited to 8300 and that is packed in.

A new arena that could do stadium events but also host concerts, especially with the center placed diamond shape stages that have become popular, giving 360 seating. I could run it.

Prejudice is an odd word to use there. There is prejudice against the city of Jackson in the same way there is prejudice against Chernobyl. Maybe it is overwrought at times, but in general it is not the State's fault that Jackson is dysfunctional and a questionable place to invest state funds.

Im absolutely aware that its state owned and have been knowing that for many many years. Im just using jackson as an example because thats where it is located and nothing there is done properly.

That's the Mississippi problem right there. "Competition". We compete against each other for big things like this, rather than competing against our true competitors, which would be other states/cities. It's OK for the Jackson area to compete against Memphis or the Coast for the big stuff, but Flowood and Brandon competing with Jackson and each other? Are you out of your mind? That crap just compounds the dysfunction in the Metro.

These high school games didn't move to Oxford/Starkville because those areas wanted to compete with Jackson. It's because there was no other choice, the Coliseum wasn't getting it done, thus the move had to be made.

There are a lot of problems in Jackson that simply cannot be fixed. That's life. But the governor, and the mayors of the major municipalities in the area, really need to sit down and discuss the viability of the whole area and figure out how to treat the 'big ticket' items in the state. There should be absolutely ZERO discussions about an indoor arena anywhere else besides downtown Jackson. Period.

Competition is fine for most medium and smaller sized things. But when it comes to big statewide events and facilities, the state (or at least each Metro area) should be working as a whole.

This is a problem at the state level too. A lot of the economic 'wins' lately have been steered towards small towns and such while we should be strategically locating things in 4-5 main areas.

Everyone is out for themselves. THAT is what holds us back.

The state legislature's dislike (does that word make you feel better) of the city of Jackson has been around all of my 66 years. At one time, Jackson was the only capital city in the country that did not receive an annual appropriation from the state government to compensate for lost tax revenue due to so much prime land being occupied by non-taxable state government buildings. I say "at one time" not because the state has started doing that for Jackson, but because I don't know whether other states have stopped doing it for their capital cities.

What are they doing? Is the inside of the coliseum getting new lights? New video boards? Etc?

The bold new city cannot provide basic services and security. Jackson should focus on figuring that out first. However, it is functioning as an efficient representative republic at the moment so I don't see how it changes much...

Prejudice doesn't really fit here. Jackson has well earned anyone questioning whether putting funds into that leaky bucket is worth it.

What about the Mississippi Coast Coliseum? Having to coordinate college basketball home games along with the issue of housing thousands of additional people (players/families/etc) during SEC basketball/baseball games seems to be a logistical nightmare in the making.

You don't read well, do you? With the coming years of flipping each location and the SEC has to make an effort to not have a home game at whomever is hosting...in addition to baseball. Yeah, it can get complicated.
Thanks for playing. Go read a book.

The chance to turn downtown around was missed when the braves new ballpark was not built downtown. That would have been huge, along with the outlets.

Just burn Jackson to the ground, there are absolutely no redeemable people or parts of the city here at all. All the other major cities in the south are a paradise compared to Jackson. I just think it is time to call a total loss, just murder all the people in the Jackson city limits and start over.

Actually, I would love to see Jackson get good. It would be good for the surrounding area and the state. I just can't conceive of how that might happen given the current situation. It would take the accidental election of extraordinary leadership from top to bottom to get it accomplished, because the current populous is most likely to continue to vote for the same folks that have had them in the ditch for decades. I'm imagining some post-election unveiling only rivaled by the end of a Scooby Doo episode when the mask is pulled off and we all find out that the criminal wasn't really Freddy after all, only in reverse, where the good guy impersonated the criminal to get elected.

I'm still curious of your answer.
The information is literally on the WBA site you linked, and very easy to find in other places. That's why I didn't answer. I wasn't just making it up, I did not know if you were really serious.

Hmmmm....I see why I missed it. I probably won't even recognize it after they finish. Which I didn't when I went to the rodeo.

From this article - https://www.wmcactionnews5.com/2020/01/24/million-upgrades-coming-mississippi-coliseum/ - “All new seating, all new non-slip floors, and for the first time ever rails to help folks come up and down these stairs.”

The WBA link was just a proposal that never got funded by the state.

Yeah I didn't mean to imply they were renovating it to be like new. I was just pointing out that they are putting money into it. They aren't just sitting there letting it rot. And I certainly don't think the state has any plans on making it a state of the art arena. More of just a building to house typical state events, and they prefer it that way.

If the state wants a true arena for concerts and sports, I think someone else will need to fund it besides Jackson or the state.
