The students being behind the home basket in the second half? I’ve been wondering this for years now.

Having the students behind the basket period is stupid. Having them behind the home basket is on another level dumb.

Does it somehow align with the doors they are funneled through? Yes, I think it might be that asinine

Second half you are always on the same end as your bench. So while it would be as easy as flip flopping who gets what bench, that is the reason.

So they can be putting their arms up WHILE our players are shooting free throws.

That's always bugged me. If you can't get your arms up before the shot, keep them down. Don't be putting them up in the middle of our players' free throws.

What does that have to do with where the students sit? Yes, you could change it by flipping which bench is home, or you could move the student seating to the other end. The question is why we ended up with our students behind our second half goal to begin with? I would assume you want your student section behind the goal the visiting team will be shooting at in the second half if you are going to put them behind a goal. Let them screw with free throw shooters. On the other hand, unlike football, being able to hear each other is actually more important on defense in basketball, so maybe you want what would presumably be your loud section on your offensive end in the second half. Never paid attention to whether other schools consistently choose one or the other.

that may be it, at least tangentially. the school would like the students to "play nice".

It's time to re-seat the Hump. We ill never have good crowds until this is fixed.

I hope someone in athletics / marketing / basketball gameday ops reads all the posts about this. I mean, they MUST know this is an issue, right?

They could spend some time studying game film / operations of other schools with more rural locations not near big cities to see how they keep people interested. Kansas St, Virginia Tech, and Clemson come to mind. Maybe West Virginia.

But why we would not work it to make sure the students are behind the visitor's goal in the second half just speaks to how poorly we plan things. That should be worked out prior to the season prior to the start of selling tickets. Seems pretty dumb to not utilize one of your best home court advantages.

The entire seating situation at the Hump is atrocious.

It is pitiful and has been commented on every season, yet nothing changes. I think they are afraid of pissing off the premium seat people. The students catch hell but why should they show up and raise hell when they have awful seating?

Someone is going to have to grow a pair and change things or else we will have the same lethargic crowds from now on.

Hell! Even Howland was trying to get the crowd to get up and make noise. It's like they think they are at theater and standing up would be rude.

We make enough revenue from the SEC Network to offset any pissed off fans who might leave, which I think would be very few anyways. I know if I was a big donor and had season tickets to a sport just for BC level points but didn't have any interest in actually going to the games I wouldn't care if they took them away. But that's me.

Plus, if they are giving that much money to have premium seats then I doubt it would be hard for them to get equally good ones from some higher ups if they wanted to attend a game.

I'm just afraid that no one is listening or no one cares in the admin. The attitude in our fan base towards men's basketball is directly tied to the administration's attitude towards it as well.

Life is tough. They need to get used to it. Sometimes it just be that way. Ought to make them clean the Hump and Hump-bathrooms after the games if they are given a student ticket for what they pay.

When they get out, they will land a $500,000 a year job and pay 60% of it in taxes so everyone can have health care.

^^^ this is the answer. It’s logistics. The student entrance is on the back side, and they can go in and to their seats without getting between the bigger money donors and the nice new entrance and chips/ice cream club area.

We won’t switch benches because there’s more space where we are due to the tunnel.

I would love to have a section in the lower bowl semi-courtside that was for the common person and not some millionaire. I guarantee that section would be filled every game because people without $$’s know to appreciate having the opportunity to be closes to the action. People with major $$’s can afford to not use their tickets.

The old seating at the hump in the lower bowl were filled with common people, people from Starkville and people close to Starkville. A lot of the seats went to professors, employees of the university and even county agents. I know, because I have a good friend that was MSU graduate and retired county agent got seats for very little cost. He was 3hr round trip from Starkville and attended every single game. He was huge basketball fan and since getting booted from his seats with the re-seating years ago he has not attended another game.

Ya, but the the tunnel is till a bit away from the student section. The tunnel is directly across from the entrance to the non-bench court side seats. So that kills that reasoning.

They need to just do what Ole Miss did at the pavilion, they put the students in a very prominent place but also made their student section smaller. It was a genius move and has really elevated the atmosphere there.

The tunnel by our current bench gives us extra space for managers, trainers, bicycle, etc. The current visitors' bench has less space, because there's no tunnel. That's why our bench has always been on that side of the court.

I agree that something needs to be done with the students. I wish we would build from scratch like the Pavilion, but we are probably locked into the Hump because of the Mize Pavilion.

The reason the students sit where they do in basketball is the same reason why they don't sit on the fifty yard line at football games. MONEY! When you geniuses come up with how to make up for the lost revenue from kicking big money donors out of their seats, then maybe we can re-seat the Hump.

Who are these magical unicorns? The big money donors dress just like empty seats. No one would be displaced.

Our fans care more about the "Left, Right" chant when a player fouls out then they do about our players shooting free throws. It's completely asinine.

They are wealthy fans and alumni that pay for the privilege of showing up two or three times a year to have a prime seat for the basketball games that they want to attend. When the Hump was re-seated about 12 years ago, many long time fans that showed up at the games but that weren't wealthy were displaced so that the wealthier fans could have the tickets. We traded atmosphere and attendance for more money. I don't like it, but it isn't going to change. Everything about MSU sports is now geared towards maximizing the bottom line.

...and I will beat the drum that the school reeeeeeallly needs to discuss with these donors a money option. Give these 1-2 game attendees something other than low seats. Extra points to a sport they will regularly attend. Who knows.

Would be curious what exactly is "big money". Are we talking 500 people all going 6 figures each for the privilege of having their university have and empty basketball arena for 90% of the games?

Bulldog Club contribution necessary for:
Court-side seats: $12,000 for a pair of tickets.
Floor Seats: $500.00 per seat.
Section 116 & 106: $250.00 per seat.
All other lower level seats: $150.00.

With the exception of court-side seats, I guess it is somewhat of an exaggeration to say that big money donors purchase the seats, but it is obvious that there are a large number of fans that are willing to shell out several hundred dollars a year just so that can attend a handful of games a year. I am too lazy to do a seat count in different sections of the Hump to see how much money would be lost if the students were moved to a better location. However, it is obvious that right now, whatever that sum is, MSU would rather have the money than fans in the seats. Hopefully, after the Hump is remodeled, and the place re-seated they will correct some of the problems that currently exist.
