We have about had enough of directv. We used to bundle our at&t services (phone, directv, internet) but at&t screwed up our bill when we switched over to fiber optic and we can’t get them to get it straight. Every single 17’ing service is contracted out to a different company, none of whom seem to know what the 17 they are doing. After going round and round with them we just gave up on bundling and pay separately which costs a lot more.

The wife just downgraded our tv package yesterday b/c they aren’t giving us any breaks on the price. Our directv bill went up to $190 per month from $140 about five months ago.

My problem is that I am tech retarded. I understand how to use directv and I don’t like change. AT&Ttvnow which is a streaming service has the sec network in their “max” package which is $80 per month.

Will i be able to watch the baseball games if I go with this service? I’ve been waiting for baseball season since Louisville knocked us out and now this ****. The day before opening day. 17!

We’ve had DirecTV for more than 20-yrs, but cancelled over a week ago (service shuts off tomorrow). Our bill was north of $180 too and wasn’t justifiable because we hardly watch it and the kids just watch YouTube on their devices.

We’ve tested YouTube TV for the past month and it’s fine for our limited viewing and is around $50 per month. I am able to use my YouTube TV credentials to log into WatchESPN...

If you still have directv then you can watch it on WatchESPN.
When we downgraded packages, we no longer have ESPN or SEC network, therefore, I assume that I can’t watch on SECN+ on my iPad. Am I wrong about that?

ETA: Just checked. Can’t watch it with our current/new package.

Sounds like you need to dump directv and get Hulu it YoutubeTV, or whatever streaming service is the cheapest and includes SECNetwork. You can probably get a free week trial up and running before first pitch tomorrow.

Hey Al, I understand the reluctance to change if it means a more complicated tech experience.

Question: do you have a “smart tv” that allows you to download apps like the WatchESPN app (I think it’s just called the ESPN app nowadays)?

Try Sling. It's like 30 bucks for blue package. Get good many of the standard cable channels....History, AMC, TNT, TBS etc. Then go with ESPN+. Its $5 per month and you should be able to watch pretty much any sport event. Of course the networks will require a paid subscription or antenna. I'd recommend antenna if it will pick up in your area. Dont necessarily need a large one and best of all it's free.

I have Youtube TV. It works great. You can watch from anywhere on any device. They do a free trial. Sign up for that today. If you like it keep it. Its $50 a month.

I'm surprised DirectTV isn't being more aggressive with their pricing. When I cut the cord about a year ago, they sent me offers that were better than any I had ever seen.

They don't need to get aggressive for a potential cord cutter's business as long as addicts are willing to throw hundreds of extra bucks a year at 'em to tune into God knows what.

We're a long way off from cord cutter's tipping the scales.

I just got off the phone with DTV.....

Similar situation that the ATT internet can only give me 12mbs to my house....cant bundle....cancelled and went maxxsouth bundle....the tv was so bad, that I had to go back to DTV for cable and stayed with maxxsouth for internet....no bundles means i pay more....i just got off the phone with DTV with more tech issues and im really sick of it....i just started my new contract with DTV in Sept....is there any way out of the contract without having to pay an enormous amount?

We were on Playstation Vue which just ended at the end of January so we had to get something new. I came home from work a couple weeks ago and my daughter was trying to find one of our women's basketball games on the ESPN app. I forgot the app was tied into the PSVue account so I got the Sling trial and we got the game going. I had to back out of the app about 10 different times during the second half because the picture froze up, it was extremely frustrating. I dropped the Sling trial the next day and got the YouTube trial. It has been great so far, you get a two week trial. For Sling I had to get the most expensive package to even get the game because it was on SEC+, and that highest sports package was also the only way to get the golf and tennis channels. That was going to be $65 per month. The YouTube package has all of that included at $50 per month. I never tried Hulu but that was my next one to try, we are sticking with YouTube though. My only gripe is that it will only run on 3 tvs or devices or whatever at a time, hasn't been a problem yet though.

I cancelled DTV and started using Hulu ~6 months ago. I do have access to all of the ESPN stuff. It's something like $55-$60 after taxes.

It won't have all the features you've gotten used to with DTV, so there are some cons to it. A few things I hate the most: the fastforward / rewind features suck compared to DTV and you'll have to watch commercials a lot of the time. There are times when I'm watching a show (did this a lot with NFL football games)... maybe an hour behind - if I fastforward it tries to jump to live, and if I rewind it takes me back to where I was. So it's like there's an hour of the game I can't access without watching it straight thru.

You also can't browse other channels with a small guide along the bottom of the screen while watching your current one. And there's no automatic "back" button to easily switch between two shows.

But I'm ok with all that for what I'm saving. We don't watch a lot of live TV anymore.

Hulu Live is the way to go imo.. we signed up for a bundle package with Hulu Live, Disney Plus and ESPN Plus and i think our bill is around $70 and we have access to watch anything.. the kids have Disney plus, wife gets all her shows on Hulu and we get our local channels..

I’m fortunate enough for Cspire to be coming to town

I’m actually too embarrassed to say how much I’ve been paying for DTV. But we have the full package with sports and movie packages.

Cspire is laying the fiber right down the road and heading my way. I’ve pre ordered and as giddy as a kid for Christmas right after Thanksgiving. Saving a boatload and my internet speed is launching forward for less than I’m paying Comcast for it.

You won't be disappointed. We've had it since 2014, and have literally never had an issue. Speeds (upload and download) have been 930 Mbps and 917 Mbps since it was installed. Never had an outage in 6 years. Can stream 4K to every device in the house at the same time, and never have to worry about buffering or slowing down.
