It was only a few years ago where we would have never dreamed of beating a Lady Vols team in Knoxville. He’s the GOAT in Mississippi State Womens basketball history. Really proud of what he’s been able to accomplish. A great man too!

It just shows you how one person

can completely flip the narrative. Maybe we'll get that in football too.

I’d look you in the eye and tell you he is the best coach of anything to step foot on this campus.

We have had some fantastic coaches. No knocks.

None have done what he’s done.

And the son of a gun ain’t done yet.

Schaefer and Ray were hired the same year.
They both came to a Alumni function and spoke, as did Dan but that’s another story.
Anyway, I had never heard of either one of them actually but after both spoke, I looked at my buddy I was there with and said “I wish Vick was coaching the men’s team!”

I'd argue that Jackie Sherrill, Dan Mullen, and even Bob Tyler have done that for us in football. None individually to the extent Vic has, but it's a lot harder to do it in SEC football too. 15 years ago, Joe Moorhead would have been hailed as a hero.

Agree Vic is the best coach to step foot on campus. I think Victoria Viviens deserves some recognition as well for the contribution she made. With her Vic was able to speed up the timeline.

Heard them say on SEC Now that we are the first SEC team EVER to go into Knoxville and win 3 straight against the Lady Vols. That's high cotton.

Vivians definitely sped up the timeline, and then the development of Big T late in her sophomore year solidified us as an elite team.

Now that they are both gone, you can argue this season is Vic’s best coaching job yet. We’ve heard all year how this is a rebuilding year, and now you have to look up and see that we’re freaking 21-3 and probably should be 23-1. IN A REBUILDING YEAR.

Vic Schaefer and John Cohen are the ONLY 2 coaches in the history of the State of Mississippi to coach in a D1 National Championship game of a college team sport. And, of course, Vic's done it twice.

This will garner some flak, but I think Ron Polk is there with Vic. Forget his return to MSU, but take into account that when he came we had a really nice pasture for a field and a few splintered wooden bleachers. Oh, and don’t forget we had a one two holer bathroom that reeked. Polk, against all odds, convinced MSU and its fan base that it was time to build a stadium. Besides that, MSU won the SEC Conference 5 times and went to the CWS 6 times under RP. He and Skip ignited college baseball and completely changed the way universities viewed the sport. Vic May surpass Polk but hasn’t just yet, in my opinion.

I’d look you in the eye and tell you he is the best coach of anything to step foot on this campus.

I wouldn’t make a habit of that bc nothing last forever. Enjoy a master of his profession while you can.

A little off topic, but Cohen’s legacy as a baseball coach is really weird. Almost feels like he is more remembered for his eccentricities and micromanagement plus the three awful years he had (his first two years and 2015) than the great successes he had (specifically 2013 and 2016) and the major turnaround of what was the worst team in the SEC when he arrived. The ‘13 run was incredibly special, and the ‘16 team gave us our only SEC regular season title of the last 30 years and is probably a Top 5 team in school history.

I wonder if Blair will take the reins when he retires. We could probably do a lot worse. I understand she is still young, but she came up in a great program and is getting some excellent training.

Totally agree. Imagine the next two years with all the young talent becoming juniors and seniors.

I'd be very surprised. Hopefully, we won't face that question for a long time. Vic's only 58.

Yeah. Some of the best highs we've seen in our baseball program (and that's saying a lot), but also some of the worst lows. Got to give him a lot of credit though for leaving the program in such good shape and for navigating the Cannizaro situation like he did.

The scary thing

Vic is just getting started on the next phase. Victoria Vivians should have been a McD-AA but she wasn't. Point being, Rickea was the first. Now we have another coming in and one that is sitting out her transfer year. We have recruited internationally. We have players from New York, Georgia, DC, Michigan, etc. Vivians and T are going to have good wnba careers. And it is only a matter of time before others do. We have a ton of talent and these next two or three years are going to be exciting for MSU women's basketball.

Even with our recent success, I've thought we were on the outside looking in at the elite programs in women's basketball. But now, we have reloaded and that's the true sign of stability and continuity. At this point, Vic is establishing one of the true elite programs in the country.
