Or at least hands to the face. Then again, why is 'hands to the face' a different penalty than grasping the facemask?

If the RB grabs the facemask and turns the head, he can absolutely be called for a facemask penalty. I've seen it several times. Same with a defensive player. If you don't grab and turn the head, it's generally not going to be called.

It was a correct call but a call that is rarely made. Very rare to see it in a situation as big as the Super Bowl.

I agree, I don't know why refs are so lenient on RBs using a stiff arm but technically any stiff arm where the hand is on the helmet of the defensive player should be at minimum 'hands to the face' and potentially a facemask. A stiff arm should only be allowed to defender's body, not his head.

That was my thought as well. Or in an NCAA game with blue bloods. Alabama receivers notoriously push off and get away with it.
