Vitale is in every basketball hall of fame there is, and there are many reasons for that.

He was so annoying in the second half (his daughter attended UF) that I turned the sound off. We started our come back as soon as I did. Carter hit the big 3 and then we went on our run so I didn't turn the sound back on and I enjoyed that game more than any I have watched this year!

Eh. I like him but then I've previously noted here that some of my relatives are Duke alums & former students.

That’s funny because he is definitely a living and breathing embodiment of constant overreaction. It’s awful while you’re losing, but then a whole lot of fun when you’re winning

Yes, his brand helped build college basketball 30+ years ago.
That doesnt mean he has a lifetime pass to annoy the **** out of almost all fanbases. It doesnt mean he has a lifetime pass to ramble on over and over about coaches or teams in other conferences that have 0 to do with the game in progress.

Most iconic figures get a lifetime pass. Few retire at, or near, their prime. Kinda that way in the regular business world too. Ever been around that company founder who everyone is thankful for, but should really retire at this point?

Jay Bilas is an insufferable douche. Yes, he knows basketball but my God, is he pompous. Fran Frachilla is the gold standard on ESPN. Sean Farnham is also very good. Dakich is OK, but comes off as too negative a lot of the time. Much like Billy Packer used to be.

Yeah, Bilas can come off as pompous. I think it stems from him being one who expects better quality product on the court from players and especially refs. He is a lawyer, a rules guy, and has no patience for refs not following/acting on rules.

Agreed. But just because it is often this way, doesnt mean it should be used as a defense of someone whose career qualifies as iconic. 2 wrongs not being right and whatnot.
At this point, Vitale needs to stay in Florida and only come out of retirement once a year to promote Jimmy V week. He can go wild and color commentate on all the games his voice will allow during that time, then go back home.

The early 80’s and 90’s he helped grow ESPN and college basketball. If you weren’t alive I get it but if you don’t get his importance in the growth of college basketball. His act has got old and it did back then but he broadcast and played to the blue bloods to get people to watch the teams that were excellent back then. In turn other teams started recruiting better to be part of a tremendous growing sport.
He helped grow college basketball just as Berman, Ley and Patrick grew sportcenter, baseball tonight and the entire ESPN brand.
I respect your thoughts on him but something tells me without guys like these we would still be on tv once a month

That was the greatest time for college basketball and he was at the center. Big East, ACC, and SEC matchups were great.

He needs to retire though... about 20 years ago.
