The hype behind KJ Costello

I took the day off due to feeling like absolute dawg dooke and decided to watch some highlights of KJ and have formed a few opinions on him.

1.) He has an odd throwing motion/release.
2.) Tends to go for the first read even if it’s not a good one.
3.) Watch his highlights against 17th ranked UCF, looked awful at times.
4.) Can surely run the ball when needed.
5.) Scarcely good under pressure.

I understand his stats look great on paper and I’m for the guy- the hype behind him in Leach’s offense is warranted, I just wouldn’t be entirely too disappointed if we didn’t get him after watching some of his highlights at Stanford.

Imagine what he would look like with a good qb coach? What did Relf look like with Croom? Post some of those vids

It’s a very low risk deal. Nothing risky about it..if he works out, tremendous. If he doesn’t, we wasted a scholly for one year.

He’s likely a better passer than what we currently have. That’s all that really matters,

Nobody ever said the guy is perfect, but Costello is inarguably a good, proven quarterback. He is probably going to be the most sought after QB transfer of the offseason. I think the excitement around him is for a few different reasons.

His numbers speak for themself, especially when you consider that he was playing in a conservative offense. In his first 2 years as a starter, Costello had a 43/15 TD/INT ratio. He hands down makes our team better next year.
Leach has played against this guy for 2-3 years. Seen him up close and personal. If Leach wants him, given the guys track record, that says a lot.
I think everyone is just excited about this potentially being a sign of things to come. If Leach can get the most proven transfer QB in the country to spurn everyone else and travel across the country and play his final season in Starkville, what does that mean for us going forward? You could be seeing the start of us recruiting a whole new level of QB for the next several years.

Got to close the deal, but there are a lot of reasons to be excited about the possibility.

These are the types of responses I can get down with. I don’t understand why folks automatically go for the closet rebel or OM troll when someone has a difference of opinion.

Yeah, I definitely think he will be a very good player and give time for Shrader and Roger's to develop. His TD to INT ratio is good and his completion percentage is good. Therefore his decisions must not be too awfully bad. If he doesn't wanna come here fine....I think Leach can get Shrader coached up.

You don't know why anyone would question you running down the top transfer QB in the country this year potentially wanting to come to MSU?

Thru 3 seasons:
KJ Costello - 62.6% completion percentage for 6151 yards 49TDs and 18INTs
Dak Prescott - 60.4% completion percentage for 5583 yards 41TDs and 18INTs

That's in an offense much traditionally less prolific than Dan's and certainly not even in the same ballpark as Leach's.

Yep, very odd that a guy with only 12 posts would take time out to criticize a QB we are trying to convince to transfer into our program. Mike Leach recruited Costello out of HS and has seen him perform for multiple years at Stanford and played against him in the Pac-12. I'm much more interested in his opinion of Costello than yours. If Leach wants him then I certainly want him. More competition at the QB position is good especially when our presumed starter without adding anyone should just now be a RS FR.

I used to roam this board in the past but never made an account to comment or be a apart of the discussion, up until recently. I tend not to post at all because of the culture on here that “if you don’t agree with me then 17 you, damn landbear rebel woman beatin, crayon eatin, window lickin sob,” etc. This thread is beginning to prove that point.

I made an assessment, if yours is different let’s discuss it. Not rocket science.

As I said, my assessment is that Leach's assessment is the only one that really matters. Leach has a proven track record with QBs and knows what he wants from a QB, so if he wants him, which he does, then I do.

Gave you an upvote because of the stats- that’s what I like to talk about.

I’m not running the guy down, see the original post where I also said his stats look good. I meant more of his mechanics that I saw in the numerous highlights I watched- that’s where I formed my opinion.

Granted, Leach and staff know way more about the guy than I myself would ever be able to comprehend, I formed an opinion off of a view videos I watched in my downtime.

Well I agree that Leach’s is the only one that matters. This a message board, where you go to have discussions on your opinions of the topic on hand, being KJ currently.

Instead of barraging someone with ridicule on theirs, how about just give yours and ya know, discuss it? Not that hard.

I have a bunch of posts, but I'm still suffering from QBtransferphobia. I'd like to see Mike take year 1 and do what he can with what he has while recruiting from high school for the future. JoMo / TS is just too fresh. And I'm not negative on this guy or even on TS. Just worked out to be a disaster so I'm gun shy and concerned about how you maintain team morale if you hit the transfer portal annually for arguably the biggest leadership position on the field.

JoMo was the disaster, not TS. The issue with TS was he couldn't stay healthy either here or at PSU. Look, KT can not run this offense under Leach, he just doesn't have the skill set. So that means that with no transfer coming in we will either have Shrader as a starter who is a SO but should just be a redshirt FR this year or Rogers who will be a true FR this year. It makes sense to add an older QB into the mix to bridge the gap. Ideally you could have the younger guys learning the offense and playing in some games but both still redshirting.

Not gonna lie. That film was atrocious, but it does appear to be his absolute worst game stats-wise from the last two years. You have to wonder if he may have already been playing hurt at that point

His throwing motion is definitely a bit odd but it’s not killing his accuracy but I bet it will come up on his NFL evaluations - it’s a little like Lamar Jackson and reminds me of a baseball infield throw
