I dunno what our last pool was. That sounds like a pretty high amount to spread around 10 on field assistants right?

A whole lot better than the $3.7 from last year, but still a bit away from where we need to be overall.

The fact that Leach is his own OC/QB coach makes the number better though. Most of the top salary pools pay top dollar to two coordinators instead of just one. Takes us from 36th nationally to 21st nationally.

Thoughts?

That would have gotten us all the way to 13th in the SEC in 2019 (not counting Vanderbilt, who doesn't report their coaching salaries), just behind Mizzou (who spent $4.72M).

https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/football/assistant

I'm not sure if that is just on field coaches or includes analysts and stuff like that. If it includes everything, we might could be more competitive with on field coaches salaries by limiting the number of off field coaches. Not sure if that's a better way to spend money or not though.

Thoughts?

Could be higher, but we’re increasing it about 30% from this past season, so its hard to complain too much. $9.7 million total package for the staff is competitive, sounds like we had to come off the planned assistant budget with Leach who obviously commands a higher salary than any other candidate we could have hired.

Each of 2 WR coaches probably making maybe $200k each.
DC making $1.5 (hopefully)
S&C making $600k (again, hopefully)
Leaves an average of $315k for the other 7 on-field assistants.

Not too bad, but we could really get some good position coaches if we can find a quality DC for around $1 million per year.

The good thing is there will likely be only 4 offensive assistants plus special teams, so we can sell a potential DC on having full autonomy over 4 assistants if needed. Could break it up however he wants.

S&C won't count against that number. That'll be for the 10 on-field assistants.

Love it. More is always better. I really love the incentive package built into his contract. Very nice chunk of change if he takes it where we all want to go

I think it’s great. Charlie Strong as DC And that strength coach from Oregon (former MSU player). That’s a good amount of $.

With all due respect, I don't want Charlie Strong anywhere near our campus.

I wish people would give a reason behind their reasoning for making a comment. Something like...

With all due respect, I don't want Charlie Strong anywhere near our campus....because I hear he throws his fast food trash out of his car window as he drives around.

That would give the other readers so much more information to formulate their own opinions and/or simply agree with what you have to say. When posters don't give reasons for their comments, it just leaves an incomplete post. Why I'm wasting my time writing something that will make no impact is beyond me....

Are you kidding? Take a look at the last several jobs he's held. NOBODY is clamoring for him back. South Florida became an utter embarrassment under his leadership.

There's a huge difference between being a HC and running the program, and being a DC.

Bring Charlie Strong as DC

The defense at USF was horrific. I realize he wasn't the DC, he was the HC, but it happened under his watch. We can and have done much better.

He was an elite defensive coordinator during his time at South Carolina and Florida from 1999-2008. Had some elite defenses at Louisville, decent at Texas. Do you think all of the sudden he forgot how to coach defense because he had a bad HC tenure at South Florida?

If Leach grabs him up, which would shock me more than the actual Leach hire TBH, I'm behind him. I'm not convinced John Cohen would approve the hire anyway because of the Cannizaro like rumors that followed Strong from Louisville.

Is that money only for on-field assistants? If so, that’s a very healthy pool. I think most of those numbers schools release including the recruiting staffs, etc. I could be wrong, though.

Do you understand the difference between being a DC and being a Head Coach? Jesus

Ole Miss posted 5.3. I guess if Keenum could stop placating his base and sell beer at @ 700,000 a year we could top those ********.

The 5.3 at Ole Miss includes recruiting staff and recruiting analysts, too, though. That’s why I asked the question I did, because if the 4.7M at State is truly just for the 10 on field assistants then that’s a huge salary pool.

If Cohen allows Strong on campus he'll have some explaining to do to Andy C. When is the last time Strong was a successful DC? His career has been in a death spiral for 12 years. I want no part of anything Charlie Strong.

Wow! I stand corrected. Appreciate you sharing that. Guys and gals - it’s a new day in Mississippi football. Either or both programs may still suck, who knows? But it won’t be because of a lack of financial commitment. Cohen and Carter both committed to the football programs and the HC they hired to lead it.

Yeah I wonder if the AD’s are leveraging that future ESPN/Fox money when making these decisions.

So basically you are saying Mullen was a ****** coach when Peter Sirmon was our DC? Yea, I’m not buying that.
