I don’t know why a coach would wait on USCe and not take the state job. Their schedule is not any easier than ours right now, I would imagine we can pay about the same.

I have a feeling Napier has done us dirty somehow. Can’t wait to see what Steve has to say about it.

He's from north Georgia and played at Furman, then coached at Clempson and SC State. He has a lot of ties to the area.

From what I heard we had Napier all set to be the next coach after the EB, but ‘someone’ put a stop on that and now Napier is annoyed at us bc of our indecision

HD6 mentioned on T&L that he could be waiting on USCe next year

I just don't see this being the case. He knows just as well as anybody that in his profession you have to strike while the iron is hot. There is always a chance he could go 4-8 next season and no P5 job will be on the table.

According to all of my Ole Miss friends, the selection of Fundue restaurants in Starkville is so limited that no coach in their right mind would take the MSU job.

I find that hard to believe. I just don't see us telling him that EVEN if we win the Egg Bowl and get bowl eligible we are still going to absolutely oust him and you have the job. I could see us telling him we should have an opening we want you to fill if we lose.

Why wouldn’t Clemson be his dream job then? Or UGA? I doubt he just grew up a huge Gamecock fan. Seems like its just the Power 5 job closest to his original home town that may come open the soonest because they have a guy on the hot seat.

ETA: Starkville is only 30 min further away from his hometown in Georgia than Columbia, SC is. So if its a geographic proximity thing there really isn’t much difference.

Probably that's what it is.

Napier is getting bad advice or has an overinflated view of himself

He's not Norvell status yet. He would be wayyyy down the list of a blue blood if that's what he's after.

Waiting on jobs that may or may not open is generally a bad idea, even if it is a dream job or closer than ideal to what is currently available. We aren't ideal. I get that. But we are a very healthy promotion.

I suppose he may just not care about generational wealth and just feel like kickin it in Lafayette indefinitely but high producing individuals generally aren't comfortable with settling.

Work a few seasons in Starkville and make more money than you would in more than a decade in Lafayette. Prove you can compete in the SEC (he would). Enjoy getting "17 you rich" and bolt if the perfect opportunity comes along. Fail? Pocket 10+ million and go be an OC somewhere decent and cry into pillows stuffed with money.

Ever consider that not all of this is our fault. Most of these coaches are pretty big ******** and have a lot higher regard for themselves than anybody else.

Really?

Considering 100% of my post was focused on Napier and the title literally says that Napier might have an overinflated view of himself....yeah, I have considered it.

If you accidentally responded to my post, disregard.

Exactly. Dan Mullen provided the blueprint if you want an elite job. He proved you can win at Mississippi State, and if you do, you can get pretty much any job you want.
