He thinks he is being cute in response about the need for a seasoned staff. But he forgot the sarcasterics so it just looks like a dumb post.

I know you are being a smartass. But an inexperienced coach coming into the toughest division in football needs his assistants to be experienced and very capable, as Judge will be doing a lot of learning on the job.
Every coach needs a capable staff. If you mean he should lean more towards experience over potential, then say that, as that’s an actual point worth making.

No on Reed Stringer. Will Hall doesn't excite me. I hope he can recruit his *** off.
I’m not a football expert but I could have told you that Will Hall was going to be a successful football coach when he was 15 years old. Nobody works harder or smarter than Will did and believe it or not, he is a polar opposite of Baawwbby.

At least Cohen has the stones to go after someone who is actually a HC candidate in the NFL. He could have easily mailed it in with a hire of Hud, etc. Not a shot at those guys, but for us to make any headway in this league, you have to take risks sometimes. At one point, Saban, Dabo, Riley, and the like were all unknowns.

Being a candidate (but not a serious candidate) for an NFL head coaching job should not be considered a major reason to make him our head coach. Coaching in the NFL is a completely different animal. You don't have to recruit, you have more practice time with your players, you don't have to worry about their grades, if they're in class, what they're doing friday night, etc. And the roster management is much, much easier and there are fewer compliance rules to keep track of.

I keep hearing "bbbbbbbut...he's a candidate for the Giants job!" He doesn't have a chinaman's chance at that job, and even if he did, I saw Marvin Lewis interviewed for the Cowboys job....but I don't see anyone campaigning for him.

If Judge weren't an alum, we wouldn't take a second look at him. His resume is weak.

How many of y'all who are hating on Joe Judge possibly being named our coach would also be crazy excited if we hired Joe Brady as our HC? At first I was hesitant about hiring Judge but the more I research him and learn about how well thought of he is and who he would bring with him, I am very exciting about him. And I by no means am a sunshine pumper.

I don’t disagree with anything you say. Al Groh is a good example of NFL not translating.

Also, the Browns are the Browns for a reason. They haven’t made a good decision since Bernie Kosar was under center.

I’m just saying we are taking a risk regardless, and my personal opinion is that i don’t mind taking the Judge risk anymore than the other names listed, including Napier. Assuming he doesn’t hire a bunch of people just because they played or coaches at State. That would be an immediate red flag.

Fair enough. Like I said, I'll get behind him.

As I said on 247, the main reason I liked Napier is because he is committed to building a great staff, keeping them, paying them well, and adding analysts and support infrastructure. Given that we only like operating on the cheap, a guy like Napier would have forced our hand on that, and that was the biggest thing that excited me. Judge may do the same thing, but what I see instead is what will probably be the lowest paid head coach in the SEC, and the smallest assistant budget. That stuff has got to change if we are going to be competitive.

You make some very good points here. However, if Eddy O can make it to a national title game, anyone can. That's what you call a chinaman's chance. To me, that says it's all about empowering the staff around you to do their jobs. Many coaches (e.g. Malzahn) will never take the next step because they can't let their assistants do their jobs. We have to find someone who can do just that.

I wouldn't want any of the guys who DID get hired by the Giants recently anywhere near our program.

You didn’t say a word about “seasoned” or experience in the post I responded to, but sure.

I absolutely would NOT be excited about hiring Joe Brady as our HC. It would be Moorehead all over again. Same philosophy, but again with different talent pool. It would be a terrible hire, actually insanity.

"Eddy O" has coached in the SEC. He's coached in the PAC 12. He's an accomplished recruiter. And he's built probably the best staff in college football.

Joey Judge is no Eddy O.

I'd be hesitant as **** on Brady. Let's see if he's nearly as good next year without the stars quite as aligned. Our issue is we are trying to play a "sure thing" game while paying at a level that doesn't allow it.

Drebin is on the money on this one. The bertstare posts were awesome because he basically said we'd put together $10mil for Napier and staff. That's playing with the big boys kinda investment.

I wouldn’t be thrilled about Brady either, but at least he has recent experience at a blue blood SEC school and other Power 5 experience. No telling what he looks like without Burrow (who he deserves credit for improving). You don’t shoot up to the consensus #1 NFL draft pick just because of one coach alone. Talent and poise has a lot to do with it. Burrow / Brady has been a mutually beneficial relationship to say the least.

Joe Judge currently works under the best cheater in the history of football. Belichick

And to be clear, I consider that a plus

Everyone says he's really good, but what has he actually done so far? A 66th ranked scoring O at ULL on the way out the door with Hud? To a 30th scoring O at Tulane this year? Tulane definitely improved offensively under him. But that's two total years as an OC in the league of 5. Zero days served in the power 5 in any role whatsoever. ZERO DAYS. That is supposed to be our can't miss homerun offensive coordinator that everyone is going to get excited about?

That's not mitigating risk of hiring a first time head coach, it's compounding it.
I don’t intend this to totally disagree, but per Football Outsiders, Tulane improves from 95 to 30 in schedule-adjusted offensive efficiency. That’s a significant improvement.

There's risks with all of them. But anyone on that list who's been a head coach before, or has more than two years of college football coaching experience is less of a risk.

Maybe he will hire a great staff. We will see. But he would not be a leading candidate for any other program in the SEC if he applied.

So we’re gonna go ahead and crush him preemptively. Well, we do like to eat our own.

Marvin Lewis satisfies the Rooney Rule. Judge doesn’t. There’s no reason for the Giants to interview him for the hell of it. There’s definitely a reason for the Cowboys to interview Lewis even if they have no interest.

Having said that, your last sentence is still probably correct.
