You are more than entitled to have questions or concerns. I don’t think that anyone knows for sure what we are getting. But he is a young MSU alum who is highly thought of in the coaching world and most importantly should be a change of pace from what we’ve gotten the last two years. I just urge you all to give the guy a fair shake. He inherits a decent talent pool to build on and with the right culture and assistants in place, if he is indeed the coach that Belichick thinks he is, he could be a massive steal for us.

Nothing wrong with being cautious. But until he proves that he can’t get it done, he deserves all of our support 100%.

If it’s Judge he needs to hit a home run with his staff.

And I hope the rumors on Gene's about Judge's staff are mostly incorrect, because I don't feel great about any of them outside of Feld.

100% this. I also keep seeing a lot of folks say we can’t take a gamble with this hire. ********. We are a small fish in the toughest division in college football. We have to gamble and hope we hit it big. Who the hell is a sure thing that is even available? Napier is certainly not a sure thing.

It's sometimes a crap shoot. At best it can be a calculated risk that is better than a wild *** gamble. Check out the so called blue blood hires down through the years that ended up complete busts...and not to belabor the point but there have been more than a few in the SEC over the years

lol I agree. I was like um why should I be excited about Reed Stringer coming back? I don’t want a collection of failed coaches that used to coach here coming back If they aren’t any good. Gene’s Page is like “he’s gonna have an all star staff coming in!” “He’s got Reed Stringer, Melvin Smith, Ellis Johnson, Jackie Sherrill, the entire 99 Defense, JJ Johnson/Boobie is gonna split running game coordinator, Westerfield is coaching kickers, David Stewart coaching lineman, TJ Mawhinney coaching linebackers, Myatt Wyatt coaching QBs.” “They are gonna dig up Allyn Mckeen as an analyst.” I mean he’s the freaking guy! Sign him up! Smh

No doubt. And look at the hires that Missouri, Mississippi and Arkansas made. Not a sure thing among them.

Not particularly. But he's the least of my concerns.

That staff is going to get slaughtered on the recruiting trail until he figures things out. And with the hole we're in now (thanks, Joe), the last thing we need to be doing is hiring a coach that needs on the job training.

But I'll get behind him. Maybe we hit the lottery here. But "Bill Belichick loves him" doesn't make me feel better.

Slaughtered? You don’t even know who the staff will be.

As I acknowledge in my initial post in this thread: "I hope the rumors on Gene's Page about Judge's staff are mostly incorrect."

Winning the press conference is cool. But it's not necessary at MSU if the wins on the field follow. Just seems risky.

No way in hell a special teams coach get the job over several accomplishing head football coaches.

Who is available that is not risky?

There's risks with all of them. But anyone on that list who's been a head coach before, or has more than two years of college football coaching experience is less of a risk.

Maybe he will hire a great staff. We will see. But he would not be a leading candidate for any other program in the SEC if he applied.

Everyone says he's really good, but what has he actually done so far? A 66th ranked scoring O at ULL on the way out the door with Hud? To a 30th scoring O at Tulane this year? Tulane definitely improved offensively under him. But that's two total years as an OC in the league of 5. Zero days served in the power 5 in any role whatsoever. ZERO DAYS. That is supposed to be our can't miss homerun offensive coordinator that everyone is going to get excited about?

That's not mitigating risk of hiring a first time head coach, it's compounding it.

Maybe not SEC West, but a candidate for the NFC east. Moorhead had college HC experience.

I’m just glad Moorhead is gone and we aren’t hiring Gene Chizik. I’m going to hope this guy puts a hell of a staff together, and be thankful there is hope for our football team again next season, because a week ago i had zero.

Am I reading this wrong? I don’t give a damn if we hire Bill Parcells, I want him to have a great staff.

The whole "candidate for the NFC east" thing just doesn't move the needle with me. The only reason anyone would be looking at him at that level is because he coached under Belichick. And the NFL is full of ****** coaches. Freddie Kitchens was a head coach in the NFL, for pete's sake.

NFL coaches with limited college experience don't always translate. I remember the last NFL position coach we hired as a head coach...how well thought of he was, who he played and coached under in college, etc. That one was a disaster.

But I'll get behind him. You are correct - Moorhead is gone and it's not Chizik. Those are good things.

Wyatt's comments on his show today made me feel much better, almost excited that it might be Judge.

You must not have read this board much today. Only Judge and other first time head coaches “need a home run staff.”

I know you are being a smartass. But an inexperienced coach coming into the toughest division in football needs his assistants to be experienced and very capable, as Judge will be doing a lot of learning on the job.

At least Cohen has the stones to go after someone who is actually a HC candidate in the NFL. He could have easily mailed it in with a hire of Hud, etc. Not a shot at those guys, but for us to make any headway in this league, you have to take risks sometimes. At one point, Saban, Dabo, Riley, and the like were all unknowns.

I don’t disagree with anything you say. Al Groh is a good example of NFL not translating.

Also, the Browns are the Browns for a reason. They haven’t made a good decision since Bernie Kosar was under center.

I’m just saying we are taking a risk regardless, and my personal opinion is that i don’t mind taking the Judge risk anymore than the other names listed, including Napier. Assuming he doesn’t hire a bunch of people just because they played or coaches at State. That would be an immediate red flag.
