Joe Judge would be the better hire

Trolling, yes, but let's discuss Judge. He looks like he's a Special Teams guy, and hasn't been in college since 2011, and that was with some pretty damn good Bama teams, probably the most dominant of all of them. Not sure I'm seeing what puts him above the rest. He's coaching wide receivers now, so I guess we are trying to rectify what was our weakest points last year? Doesn't make much sense to me. Need someone who accentuates our strengths, and you can hire out the rest. Is he a super 'culture' guy or something?

He would be a CEO type hire and a risk but any coach at this point is a risk. For State to sustain success I believe we have to go with a CEO type hire. Yes Mullen coached but he’s a lucky get and look how quickly he wanted to get out of here once he got that success with Judge he would stick around. We would be like Arizona state and herm Edwards, I would say LSU but their athletic budget far exceeds ours, I’m not saying Napier is a bad hire but judge is a Mississippi State guy under the greatest coach to ever coach football and being highly touted as a potential head coach in the NFL. Napier is great too but I think more potential with Judge and I understand the downfall is him not having head coaching experience but Napier just has 2 years in the Sun Belt. He’s been with organizations that know how to win and obviously something is seen there if the giants want to interview him. I just think our best way to success is through him but at this point no one knows. Napier is everyone’s favorite but As I stated won’t be a popular opinion but I think Judge is better for the program
I don't know a lot about him other than he played here, and he's spent the last 10 years coaching special teams before also coaching receivers this year. Honest question: what makes him a good head coach candidate? I get the benefit of being a part of multiple successful programs (Clemson, Alabama, Patriots) and the Mississippi connection, but shouldn't he have more experience outside of just special teams?
coaching tree has a lot to do with it. he has studied and watched 1)the best NCAA coach of all time 2)the best NFL coach of all time.
on top of that, he is an MSU guy. We wouldnt have to worry as much about him taking another job every years-end.

I would think he would definitely want the Position if it were offered to him. Clearly he would put his heart and soul in it as he appears to be 100 percent committed to teaching and appears to be very organized as well. Belechek did say he was as an excellent coach.
Furthermore, based on the places he has coached and the training he has received it could be the best hire since Mullen as it is possible he is about to really take off in his career. It’s a Crapshoot but everybody is a Crapshoot unless it’s Someone like Venables or PJ Fleck Which would Prolly cost 10 million dollars To hire.

I could get excited about Judge but it just seems like a huge risk to me. What's his recruiting plan? Who would his staff be? What's his offensive and defensive philosophy? He can tell John, but we would just be going on faith because he hasn't had the opportunity to show it. Just a total gamble.
cohen likes recruiters. so i believe even though he has other check marks on his list he is trying to make. i would imagine someone with recent college coaching experience and good recruiter would be on there. also head coaching experience is something else i believe he will be looking for. I just don't think Jo meets any of those checks.
NFL teams are interviewing him, and trusting him with their franchise for that consideration. He is learning under one of the greatest coaches in all of sports, and how to build culture. Add to that, he and his wife played sports at MSU, and can convey to recruits what that means. It sounds like he could also bring in a great group of assistants
Let's be honest. If he wasnt an MSU guy, he wouldn't get a sniff. He has never been a HC or coordinator. He doesnt have extensive recruiting ties. May be a great guy, but that would be the ultimate risk move for Cohen who cant afford another bad football hire.
Maybe you are right, but then again if there was a young coach in the NFL that is already tagged to be an NFL head coach in the next 2-3 years --- and he reaches out for our HC job, and says his wife is also totally ok living in Starkville ...... I think he gets an interview.
very true. I would say more that he 17 up by hiring someone with no experience in the SEC, as either player or coach. It is a risk, but also a huge ceiling. Napier makes sense, but recruiting all the WR recruits next year in MS with a guy that was an NFL WR coach would not be too shabby.....assuming he can coach up that weakness.

It's a 53 man roster. You don't have a ton of players to work with so they have to find those overlooked guys in the later draft rounds. I remember when Malcolm Butler picked off Russel Wilson in the Super Bowl a few years ago to seal the win for the Patriots, there were several articles written about him. Joe Judge was mentioned in many of them as having found this guy. He was an undrafted free agent out of Division 2 West Alabama, but Judge had saw his film and realized he could play.
That's one thing I think Judge brings to the table. We're not going to out recruit Alabama, LSU, and Auburn. We need a guy who can find those 2 and 3 star guys that are just overlooked and underrated.

Can't you say the same thing about offensive coordinators? Defensive coordinators? The NFL doesn't seem to think so - they take shots on interviewing ST coordinators as HC fairly often.
Think we loved Mullen (rightfully so) as a hire because the history of MSU football has been anemic offense, and he not only did he come in with a resume that said "I'm going to change this" he also said he'd do it himself. The defense suffered a lot from it. And when he left I think we took an extremely lazy approach and said "alright go do the same thing", again hiring an offensive guy who promised to run the offense himself.
How often are programs like that (HC is OC) and how often do they last 10+ years? Fine with going outside the box, but Judge specifically is going to need to come into the interview with an impressive list of committed assistants willing to join... hopefully coinciding with a massive asst. salary boost.
Edit: A favorite to win the Super Bowl this year, Harbaugh, was hired directly from ST coordinator. He credits having to work with all 53 players on the team, vs. only offense or only defense, as what makes ST good candidates.

More of a risk than the Savant from Penn State, but he's turning into my top choice. Would he consider us over and NFL job? doubtful.
We'd be lucky to get a guy like that. He's my top choice now, therefore I've lost all hope of him coming.
John Harbaugh was a special teams coach for 9 seasons before spending one season as a D coordinator and then being hired as head coach of the Ravens. So ST coach to HC is not a huge unprecedented leap. Judge could be the guy for us. Belichick loves the guy and he’d probably be O coordinator for the Pats next year if McDaniels gets a head job somewhere.

Up to this idea. Yes it’s a gamble but if he can bring in the right staff he has a lot of the intangibles you look for in a head coach. He appears to be a winner with a huge work ethic, organized, intelligent and passionate about MSU. He checks a lot of boxes.

His wife played soccer at State and was All-SEC, so they obviously have a draw to Starkville.
He’s never been an OC or DC, but he has been STC in the NFL which is no small role. He’s also the only coordinator in the NFL to have also been given position coach duties (WR).
Just for the record, Dabo Sweeney has never been a coordinator before Clemson gave him the interim job in 2008. Not saying he’s the next Dabo so no need to blow me up for that, just saying OC/DC/HC is not a prerequisite.
It’s rare (unprecedented?) that we have a candidate who views Starkville as a huge positive, I think we’d be wise to give strong consideration to Coach Judge.
