How bad is the PAC 12?

For you stat nerds...

Utah over Bama 2010ish
OU over Bama 2012ish
UCF over Auburn 2017
Texas over UGA 2018
Texas over Utah 2019

all of those games featured an underdog by more than 4 points who won outright against an opponent that should’ve mauled them... how are they connected? Each team who got beat lost the last game of their regular season to get eliminated from the natty/playoff. Those teams probably spent the entirety of bowl practice lethargic and pissed off about the previous game.

Bama against Michigan and UGA against Baylor tomorrow both fit this trend also... however, I don’t see either of the trends holding up in either game. UGA has a roster (and coach) who tasted this bitterness last year, so I think Kirby will be able to use it to motivate his guys to get ready for this game. I don’t think Saban will let Harbaugh beat him.

We shall see.

In that same approximate time frame there was a similarly fated team that lost the season finale to miss out playing in the BCS title game, but were then listed as a 7 point dog in their bowl game. WVU defeated (you guessed it) Oklahoma 48-28 after the 2007 season.

Interesting. I have only looked back to that Bama/Utah game and never any sooner. I wonder how many games in a row those “devastated to not be in the bigger game” teams have lost. They’ve all been beaten as favorites too.

You know, I don’t think the committee was going to vote us in over Ohio a State that year... but our resume certainly looked better than theirs... when we got dragged by GTech in the Orange Bowl after losing to OM in the finale.

The example I provided didn't exactly fit into your criteria, but was just interesting to me because the disappointed team was actually the underdog instead of a favorite.

Agree. Only way we were getting in was a convincing win over Ole Miss and an Ohio State loss.

Ahh, I misread your statement. WVU was left out cause of a bad loss, then listed as the dog and beat OU.

Yes. Not sure if that's a case of a team regaining their motivation through disrespect or just the usual overrating of Oklahoma. Probably some of both.

Also, that Pat White/Steve Slaton team was about as fun of a college team as there ever was. I loved watching them, except when they drug our asses twice.

What awesome timing we had in our series with GT, WVU, and Houston in the 00's. Amazing work by the Injuns.
