I’m in the woods for first time this year. Has anyone had any luck? Are they rutting in your area?

Bucks are still chasing does in NW Mississippi. Had a friend who killed a nice one Thursday afternoon. There was an absolute monster killed in Horn Lake a couple of weeks ago.

No sport in deer hunting.....shoot doves or something else hard to hit. Quit the deer many years ago because it was like shooting goldfish in a bowl. Feed the deer, train him to come where you are, and then kill him from the comfort of your shoot house with a weapon fine tuned to kill at long distances. It just isn’t a challenge.

It’s a different ballgame

if they are still chasing in nw MS then I’m guessing that they haven’t started in central MS

I'm seeing spikes and mostly young bucks chasing. Haven't seen Bucks chasing but it could start any moment.
I hunt in Holmes County.

But his tenderloin sure does taste good fried and sitting on a plate by some mashed potatoes and homemade biscuits covered in gravy.

Well good for you. I can go out every day and shoot a doe if I wanted. Big bucks are more challenging because of their movement.

I deer hunt because it’s something to do because duck hunting sucks now. We get a lot of enjoyment taking people who hardly ever get to deer hunt or kids that are going for the first time. It’s a lot of fun seeing their excitement.

I hunt in Starkville and bucks are definitely chasing. I don’t think we’re at the peak of the rut yet, but it’s close. I’ve let a bunch of does walk this year. Probably going to have to stop that at some point, but it’s hard to shoot does knowing there are good bucks on camera.

The rut is happening now. I watched a small 8 pt and spike chase does in some hardwoods yesterday afternoon.I haven’t killed a mature buck in 3 years. I spend a lot of hours in the woods and it is not as easy as some people make it seem. Unless, that is, you are hunting behind a high fence or in a high dollar club.

Deer are overpopulated, it's our civic duty as sportsmen/conversationalist/outdoors mens to thin the heard.

Deer related - muscle worms

Anyone ran into these before? Was cutting some meat from the freezer and noticed what looked like worms in the loin meat. Did a little online research and it appears to be something called "muscle worms" usually found in ham and loins. They say harmless to people, but don't think we'll be eating this. Bad part is, I'm pretty sure the other loin has already been eaten. If it was, maybe it was clean since this is the first I've noticed these.

My brother shot one that he approximated to be 6 1/2yo a cpl weeks ago. Outwardly the buck had no signs of injury or illness. It was actually very healthy looking considering it only had 2 teeth left so CWD wasn’t an issue . But he started skinning it and the meat had a rancid infected look to it. He ended up letting the coyotes have the whole thing as even the backstrap didn’t seem right. He hated it but he’s cleaned or helped clean probably 100 between us brothers and dad and he’s never seen one like this and just wasn’t gonna risk it with his family.

Here’s your tip: conversation and conservation are not the same word. One involves talking.

What's wrong with being conversational about being a sportsman/outdoors man? Plus i'm part Indian, I can talk to deer and many other animals. Squirrels are jerks by the way.

What part of the state did your brother take this deer?

I’ve seen it before in a buck I killed ten years ago today. After finding him in the woods after I shot him (from my combine) we discovered that he had apparently been hit by car some time last spring and was missing the bottom part of one of his legs. The opposite side antler had grown all mangled looking while the other side was a perfect 6 point antler. Hung him up to skin him and discovered the meat to be rancid looking and possibly infected I guess. Needless to say we threw it out. We figured the trauma from the hit had caused some type of reaction.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I shot this in Desoto Co about 10 years ago. Had no idea he was injured when I shot but I knew he had a funky antler on one side. Turned out it looked like his back opposite leg had been hit by car. Not a great photo but he had 5 on his good side and only 3 on the opposite

I got a 3 point on Friday (he only had left side beam). Saw this deer during bow season, but wasn’t close enough to shoot. Since then, I have him on camera several times. No stub or broken beam was ever seen on right side, so I decided he was a definite cull. He had somehow broken right side off down in skull plate had some fever down in the hole. Didn’t have time to skin him out, just gutted and put in cooler. Hopefully meat will be ok.

Anyone who gets any rack buck should be proud. Doing it from a chair triples it.

I miss the days when I could hunt deer but I miss turkey and duck hunting the most. I don't even own any camo anymore except for a directors style lawn chair I just bought. I'm hoping when we move out of the city things will open up again.

I have seen lots of bucks following/chasing/running does ever since opening weekend of gun season. Killed a nice 10 chasing a doe December 2nd. Had a good one on a doe opening weekend I never could get a clean shot on. Another decent 8 harassing does evaded me last weekend. Lots of smaller bucks in between all this. All in Holmes county. Our peak is pretty much end of this week..
