The Denver Broncos worked out rookie quarterback Nick Fitzgerald on Tuesday, a person close to the player informed Broncos Wire.

Fitzgerald (6-5, 226 pounds) appeared in 43 games during his time at Mississippi State and completed 54.6 percent of his passes for 6,055 yards with 54 touchdown passes against 28 interceptions. He also rushed for 3,504 and 45 touchdowns and caught one pass for nine yards.

It’s unclear if Denver views Fitzgerald as a QB prospect or if the team is considering him as a player who could change positions. Because of his inaccuracy, Fitzgerald might be asked to change his position.

Fitzgerald signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a college free agent following the NFL draft but he failed to make their 53-man roster. He spent the first month of the season on the Bucs’ practice squad before being waived on Oct. 8. He has remained a free agent since then.

The Broncos have been working out players to consider as future contract options. At the end of the regular season, Denver will sign players to future deals that will become official when the new league year begins in March. Players who sign future deals in January are often longshots to make the final roster.

With the right coach/situation, Nick could do great things. I hate those thugs from Oxghanistan derailed his career.

I had no idea that the Bucs cut him.
He was never on their team to cut. Wish MSU would quit touting former players on practice squads now that we actually have (at least 4) Pro Bowl talents actually in the NFL... it was acceptable when we had like 2 players on NFL rosters in 2009.

Practice squaders get a weekly salary, thus aren't protected by the NFLPA in the same way. They're more team staff than player. Squad players can only be in the NFL practice squad system for a total of 2 years, and 6 weeks or more constitutes a 1 season.

Not sure if he's currently on the Bucs practice squad, but even if he is, any of the other 31 teams can sign them to their 53 man roster... as long as they don't have a game against that team in 5 days or less. So, more staff than player.

EDIT: If Taysom Hill can carve out a niche, Nick can carve out a niche, but Taysom's roster spot is justified as a special team player. Requires a special person and ego to go from record NCAA QB to nameless player (Hill being exception, JT Gray being the rule... guy on a 53 man not even Saints fans know of).

There's no question that he wasn't exactly Drew Brees, but shouldn't he be allowed to add 5% points to his completion percentage due to his absolutely ****** receiving corps????

On average, 1 more completion per game would add 5% to his completion percentage to put him at 59% for his career. I would dare say that there was, on average, at least 1 catch-able pass per game that wasn't caught.

You are forgetting that most of the actual 54% were dink and dunks near or behind the line of scrimmage. You have to make deep and intermediate passes to be a viable backup QB.

Just reading the article where it said he was waived. Waived/Cut, tomato/tomato.
