Taking a break from the Moorhead talk for a second. Barring a crazy USC upset of Clemson and a backdoor by them into the APR bowl picture with a 5-7 record, we now know there will be 9 bowl eligible teams from the SEC. There are 11 tie-ins, with two bowls (Bham, Indy) picking a a tier below the Outback, MCB, Belk, Gator, Texas, Liberty tier. So, it looks like Bham / Indy will both have to go outside the SEC to get teams. For each additional SEC team that makes the CFP, you have one bowl in that “mid-tier” that will also have to go outside the SEC to fill their slots.
SEC will get minimum of one CFP team, possibly up to 3 if things get real crazy (but not likely). Two teams is still a pretty strong possibility.
In any case, there will be some combo of LSU, UGA, Bama, and maybe UF in the CFP, Sugar, and Citrus Bowls.
If only one SEC team makes the CFP, you have one of the 4 teams above dropping to the mid tier, and you have full slots at that tier. Probably would be Florida, and I think you’d be looking at Outback for them. Texas Bowl makes sense for A&M, Auburn probably looks good for the Gator, Tennessee / UK split the Belk and MCB, then we would head to the Liberty.
Honestly I think Cohen will lobby strongly for Memphis. We’ve seen enough of this team to know we aren’t cut out for a major challenge from a decent ACC / Big 10 / Big 12 team, and I think its the one location we could be expected to have a good turnout. If two SEC teams make the CFP, we may have a choice between Memphis and another location, but I still think it will be Memphis.
