For us a best case scenario is 7-8 wins consistent on average. Ain’t gonna be an elite team consistently because we have too few eyes on the tv. The SEC is set up for the the top 6. Find the consistent middle ground with a great run 1 out of 5 years and we are good.
More than that and hell will follow from the NCAA( actually the SEC). We are at lower to mid tier in the pecking order. Let’s ease up the pecking order and know our final resting place.
Case in point. Us, Mississippi And Missouri made a bit of noise last 5-6 years. Now name me the teams on probation. Just saying

Arkansas grabs Gus leaving Norvell to the highest bidder. Unless his mysterious issue is still a problem.

Mizzou was a bit more than 5 years ago but you get my point. This conference is set for the big 6 consistently. We ain’t them. Start showing up on a regular basis and he’ll follows. Every conference has teams like us. You need us for the conference but the money runs through the elite. Our job should be figuring out how to show up as a sleeper once every 5-7 years. Win 7-8 every other year.
I’m just saying we will never be a National power consistently because this tv contract ain’t set up for us. But every once in a while could work.

I say what I did because do you really think Mississippi was brought down by Leo and Kobe? Hate saying it but you know that was because of Bama, Georgia, Ohio State. We were the perfect out for them to bring down a team that was doing same **** as they do!
It’s hilarious they created a toxic atmosphere in our rivalry while they walked away and we both paid the price. I’m not a black helicopter guy but isn’t it funny we took Mississippi down and then we get Tutorgate but yet these big time players keep rolling?
We have to know our place find mid ground that nobody freaks about and sneak up on teams every 5 years or so

GTFOH with this loser *** mentality

It’s not a loser mentality, he’s just a troll. Every post he makes is about state knowing their place in the SEC. Usually his post say something about OM too.

Been saying for a month or so the Hogs are seeing the opportunity to grab Gus and know with a loss to Bama he will be theirs for the taking.

My big concern with Gus is that he is also an "offensive coach" yet his offenses have struggled more years than not. He has not developed a single quarterback his entire time there and most have gotten worse as their careers progress. Chris Todd, Barrett Trotter, Nick Marshall (worse in year 2), Jeremy Johnson, Shaun White, John Franklin III (LOL), Jarrett Stidham (worse in year 2), and now having to start a true freshman who isn't ready because they couldn't develop a backup and whiffed on Kelly Bryant.

He's made up for his poor QB management with some really good defenses and running backs, but you have that cycle of QB's at State and you are missing bowls. No thanks, let Arkansas have him.

I don’t get the like for Gus. He recruits really good at Auburn but results are haut slightly above average. Obviously, he had the season where they played in the NC but outside of that he has four 8-4 seasons and one 6-6. He also has a 10 win season.

To be fair, Auburn usually plays a very difficult schedule with having Georgia as their east team but I would just think the results would be better with how good he recruits.

Ummm if Gus was available he immediately goes to my #1 candidate. If he's not interested in Arkansas, I'm not sure he would be interested in us though.

It's gotta be tough as hell to be an Aub fan and in Gus' shoes in the era of Saban living in AL.

Gus is all about being physical in the run game and physical up front on the DL. I think his mentality is a perfect fit for MSU. He's got a little SWAG toO!

He’s an 8-4 coach at freaking Auburn, which makes him a 6-6 or worse coach at MSU, OM, Ark, South Carolina, etc. Even his best team in 2013 should have gone 8-4 if it wasn’t for a string of unbelievable miracles never before seen in college football history. It’s laughable that anyone would want him. Might as well just hang onto Moorhead for 3 more years if that’s how low we are setting the bar.

This is basically Houston Nutt in December 2007 playing out at a different school, except Nutt had Malzahn’s same level of success at a school with much fewer resources than Auburn.

I think Gus's run heavy approach would work well at MSU. With that being said, I don't like him. Unless we hire him. Then I love him. Like a son.

I did want him to succeed but have realized I was wrong in thinking that was possible. So I’m ready and have been ready to move on from him. May sound like a loser mentality but I do hope for better days but I also know who runs this conference and it ain’t us.
I do think with a good hire we can get back to a consistent win total we had in the previous regime but I still think the deck will always be stacked against us and 6-8 other teams in our conference.
Been wrong a lot in my life about sports and I hope I’m wrong here

Malzahn averages 8.5 wins per season at Auburn, a top-15, sometimes top-10 recruiter. How many wins do you think he would average at Arkansas or State, top-30, sometimes top-25 recruiters?

I really don’t want him at Arkansas. I don’t think he’s all that great but I kinda like Arkansas sucking. He would at least have Arkansas back to average.

I’m with you on that one, Ron. Malzahn may not be in the elite class of coaches, but let’s not pretend that he’s bad.

Give him a chance to put a stranglehold on recruiting in the state of AR while also designing an offense that fits its talents, and I’d put their floor at 7-8 wins per year. We don’t need that anymore than we need OM or Kentucky to be at that level

I'm not sure he's physical OR finesse, he's just a system coach. At Arkansas, they'd probably let him run his system the way he wants it, and recruit around it. He was not allowed to do that at Auburn, the big boosters told him who to recruit. And let's not act like Cam Newton was the perfect QB for his system, because Cam would be the perfect QB for any coach's system. I actually think it ran the best with Nick Marshall. But over time they got all bulked up and ran more power and got away from what Gus does best. It worked ok I guess because they had talent, but not the well-oiled machine of 2013 and 2014.

I don't think Malzahn is great, but I think you have to recognize that they are not Bama and to recruit the way they do, they have to take more character risks and you also pick up more character risks when you are getting a lot of players that are primarily choosing on the highest bid. It's the same problem Ole Miss had but on a lesser scale because they do have a pretty good recruiting profile w/o going overboard on cheating. That's why you get teh roller coaster at Auburn; when things are going well off the field and in the locker room, the talent is definitely there. But they are going to have more off the field and locerroom problems b/c of the choices they make in recruiting.

If you look at Malzahn's record and Auburn's overall record since they first hired Shug Jordan in 1951, the overall winning percentage and SEC winning percentage are almost exactly identical. I think this would be paying a premium price for a meh hire.

What character risks have they taken in recruiting? Generally speaking they have had very few issues with bringing in any guys that were 4* or 5*, but were passed on by other programs due to off-field stuff. The whole cheating thing is also completely overblown, they aren’t doing anything that LSU, UGA, Bama, etc. aren’t also doing.

But if Auburn is throwing him away he would be perfect for us. Somebody else's garbage. Awesome. We should fire Joe and throw 6 mill a year at him

The fact that he's been able to sustain their historical/expected level of success while dealing with an in-state juggernaut the likes of which college football has arguably never seen goes in his plus column as far as I'm concerned.

He had one great year there. The rest of the time he has been about 8 a year and they out recruit us. At best he would do 7 here since we play the same schools. Second year people would want him fired.

One big advantage he would have at either Mississippi State or Arkansas would be trading Georgia as the permanent cross divisional rival for Kentucky or Missouri. Probably would even out the fact that he wouldn’t be able to get as much talent at either place as he could at Auburn. I still don’t think he’s a good long-term answer but he wouldn’t be awful.

They aren't doing anything different in the same vein that Ole Miss wasn't doing anything different. LSU, UGA, and Bama have advantages that Auburn doesn't. As good as Auburn's history is, it's not as good as LSU or Bama's and even if it's as good as UGA's, UGA still has advantages being the primary player in a more populous state.

So it's not that they are taking people that other people pass on, it's that you get a certain type of player at a higher rate when you are getting players almost exclusively focused on who is the highest bidder. LSU, Bama, and UGA all get players that want to be paid, but have plenty of reasons for going to the school in question beyond the immediate dollar amount. When you get more players that are deciding almost exclusively on dollar amounts, you are on average going to have a more difficult lockerroom to manage.

There’s just a ton of vagueness to all of the above. Totally disagree with the OM comparison too....their players on the take were well documented. They were going 3 or 4 states away and robbing 5-stars for a 6-6 team. Who has Auburn landed that they had no business getting? Also saying UGA has an advantage due to being in a more populous state doesn’t make sense either. Auburn is practically in Georgia. Only about 2 hrs from Atlanta and they have quite a following from the southern part of the state.

In summary, there’s no evidence that Auburn has any more guys that are only there for the benefits than anyone else. It’s a fan narrative that has no basis in reality. The bigger part of their inconsistency is that Gus can’t recruit or develop a QB. Last 2 years they had Stidham, who looked awesome in Year 1 before falling apart in Year 2. Now, he’s being talked about as the heir apparent to Tom Brady...been tearing it up since he got drafted and started getting some real coaching. Auburn didn’t develop him. This year they have the worst QB in the SEC West, played a legit Top 10 team in the nonconference, and they are still going to be 8-4 at worst. That sound like a team that has locker room management issues?
