Heard on the MSU broadcast we are like 117th on defensive yards after contact. That’s what I thought I heard. That’s where we win or lose the egg bowl, and that stat ain’t good.

I swear I’m not trolling by asking this, but how’s that even possible? Y’all’s defense was like a damn brick wall last year. It was all-time good. I realize Simmons and Sweat are generationally good. We all knew the D would take a step back.. but what’s happened to account for this regression? State brought back a lot of really good players on defense.

These players we lost weren’t just ordinary players. Two guys up front that complimented each other on opposite sides of the ball one that disrupted 50% of run plays and the other that disrupted 40% of pass plays and both accounting for serious attention, and oh by the way, another guy that had a reputation of almost murdering people on the field accounting for alligator arms and ghost footsteps in the secondary.

There’s nobody keeping the oline off the linebackers. Last year they were free to roam and make plays. This year their lanes are clogged. Also Sweat and Simmons got in the backfield fast enough to help cover a lot of lapses in coverage.

They were absolutely special players. Dominant. But I don’t see how losing them accounts for being 127th in the stat referenced. That seems like an effort stat. But, hell Ole Miss is fixing to score 37 and lose by 3 TD’s. It’s been a strange football season in Mississippi.
