Hot Take: Little Dooey's is Trash

Just wanted to see a general consensus on Little Dooey's. I think it's more of a tourist trap than anything. Mediocre food, horrible crawfish. Only place the food belongs is the trash.

It's hit-or-miss depending on what you order.

Give me their pulled pork and fried eggplant over just about any meal in Starkville.

Little Dooey is the Nickelback of BBQ. We all claim to hate it, but in reality the product itself is okay and sometimes actually kinda good, but there are tons of better options out there.

Caveat: I haven't eaten there in well over a decade so it may very well be trash now

The BBQ is not bad but it is not what it is made out to be. ESPN visits them on some gamedays as if it is some type of mecca of BBQ. In reality, if a McRib is a 2 on the taste scale, Little Dooey's pulled pork is a 2.6. As for crawfish, been there multiple times and the crawfish have always been soggy and discolored.

What sort of idiot goes to a BBQ joint for crawfish? You might as well have ordered a vegan gluten free plate.

Food is actually pretty good and the prices are fair. I think the fried catfish and the chicken strips are better than the bbq though.

You've got to know what you're doing when you go to Dooeys. If you go there looking for a pulled pork sandwich and expecting a religious experience, you're going to be disappointed. But they have a very diverse menu, and I'd as soon eat there as anywhere. Give me some of their catfish anytime.

I wouldn't say trash, but their best days are far behind them. As others have said, some things are hit or miss. The name is what sells now it as it has long been considered the "can't miss" of Starkville. There was a time years ago I would've said it was at the top, but not today.
Unfortunately that's what often happens with growth and expansion.

I do not post much any more, but I do love reading. I have noticed, as many of you I am sure have, that Sylvester Cream is an obvious troll. It is pretty obvious this is a guy that is trying to degrade state at every turn. From questioning Little Dooey, which could be better not having that argument, to all the ways he runs down everything state. I was banned a few years ago for a few days due to a controversial post dealing with religion, I took my punishment and learned from it. My question today is to the admins, at what point do you ban this guy? I can’t speak for anybody else but I have been reading this site for many years, and used many different user names. I am honestly thinking of turning away from the site because of this obvious troll. The site is becoming unreadable with all the negativity this guy creates. I am sure some with down vote this, and this is just one mans opinion. So hate away.

it's not the best bbq joint but it's better than a lot of others. I personally like the bbq I make at home better than most places. What you usually get at dooey's is consistency and at a decent price. Their pulled pork sandwhich combo runs at a good price compared to bbq joints in other towns that charge about 3-4 more dollars for a dang pulled pork sandwich.

I went there a few months back, and I was terrified that the catfish might not be how I remembered it back in the day. Thankfully, it was still delicious

It has always been my go-to plate at Dooey’s, and I’d put it up against just about anybody’s

I've only been there once, and that was to see what all the hype was about. It was OK but nothing special. I think the game announcers just picked it out to promote because it looks like a dump but has pretty good food.

Good to hear about the catfish & I agree. Going back this weekend. I love their tamales as well. They may not be the best, & I've never been to the Delta (Greenville?) Tamale Festival, but they beat anything I've found in Georgia so far.

Petty’s BBQ was always my go to when I was in school there. That half bbq chicken plate is probably the best I’ve ever had.

Trash a strong word. It’s decent.

But, it’s like most other tourist traps, if Starkville can claim such a thing, it’s a bit overrated.

Agreed, it is the most overrated restaurant I have been too. Two Brother’s, Pettys and Spotlight Cafe are all better BBQ options, way better BBQ options.

Don’t even get me started on comparing Little Doey’s to places in Memphis.

Pulled pork is pulled pork is pulled pork, it's all about the rub and that's subjective. One mans BBQ nirvana may be the next mans meh. I would be willing to bet that no more than a couple of people out of a hundred could identify what kind of wood is used in the fire. I will never speak ill of something that takes 6-15 hours to cook and it's served to me hot on a plate in 15 minutes. I used to cook competition and some of the best meat I ever cooked scored the lowest and stuff I almost didn't turn in placed in the money. BBQ is very subjective.

Hell, I hardly ever ate there when we lived in Starkpatch over 1o years ago and even I knew to get the catfish plate. My daughter worked there through college and would only eat the chicken strips or fish, and the pulled pork only occasionally.

It's aight. Their fried shrimp is the best thing they do. Their pulled pork is good when it's fresh.

It's become trendy to hate on Lil Dooey's. I enjoy it, but it's not the best place in Starkville. The corn salad is the best thing they have to me.

I think it's fine. Fits between that 80% (not in the 10% best thing ever but not the 10% worst either). Personally, I always ate at Petty's or Sonny's off Old West Point Rd when I was in school. Neither of those are convenient now so we've hit Little Dooey a couple of times.

Pettys used to be my go to place, but now dooeys is my go to BBQ place in stark. It’s decent, and it’s consistent. I like the pulled pork sandwich. The sides are pretty good too. The greens, okra, and the fries are pretty solid. They have pretty good bbq sauce as well. I really like the hot bbq sauce they have.

Little Dooeys

has it's place. It's a volume feed restaurant...which will never match up to a boutique, small set up.

I'll go back as the situation fits.

Good rep!

After years of hearing about it on ESPN and other places, I finally went in summer of 2011 or 2012? Anyways, all I remember is the baked beans were luke warm showboat baked beans and the potato salad was straight from Kroger deli. The only decent thing I had that day was sweet tea. Pork wasn’t anything like the espn gang makes it out to be. Had Texas A&M fans ask us in 2012 about it and they were disappointed with my response after hearing what Lee Corso and Herbstreit have said about the place. They said they would rather hear it from a local rather than national analyst. My take is the espn guys get theirs from Memphis by way of little Dooey cause mine sure as 17 wasn’t any good.
