Shocking Stat? Sign of Hope?

I was shocked by the following....this is the number of points scored through the first 21 games for each coach.

Croom - 291
Mullen - 560
Moorhead - 575

No way I was expecting that. Of course this isn't apples to apples but still.....since we're saddled with Joe for at least 1 more year maybe there's hope.

Who am I kidding...we're 17'ed!!

Mullen’s teams had a much tougher schedule his first few years . Croom was bad but also had less talent to work with initially. Joe SHOULD be better than those two, he walked into a much better situation.

150 of those points came in his first three games, which were all against bad teams. We averaged 50 points a game in his first 3 games and have averaged 24 a game in the next 18.

Someone want to figure that for SEC games only? Just curious how that looks.

We weren't really a high scoring team the first years under Mullen, but it felt like we moved the ball more consistently thanks to a grind it out offense with Dixon, Relf, and Ballard. Joe cares more about his explosive plays...

How about

Croom’s last 21 to mullen’s first 21, and mullen’s last 21 to Moorhead’s first 21 ?

You are right, it was a little different era for scoring 10 years ago vs some of the defenses we played back then as well. 2009 we were 72nd in scoring and 2010 48th and increased our points by 70. Last year we were 68th and ranked 90th right now We should add to our points with who we have to play, let’s see how it finishes out

Yeah this stat is meaningless when you do all games because not all schedules and non conference opponents are created equal. I think the better comparison would be conference games. Even then it’s not completely equitable. Jomo has that 52 point performance against Arkansas there to run up his score, for example, and that clearly had more to do with how bad they were than how good we were.

There are lies, damned lies, and statistics. That is skewed in several ways. Scoring everywhere is up significantly over 10 years ago. The SEC West was stronger 10 years ago than it is today. Joe inherited more talented players than Dan did. Joe's numbers are skewed by 4 really high scoring games against terrible teams last season. Dan's offense trended up from year 0 to 1 to 2. Joe's is trending downwards from year 0 to 1 to 2.

Croom’s last 21 to mullen’s first 21, and mullen’s last 21 to Moorhead’s first 21 ?

I did a rough attempt at this. Not quite the 21 vs 21. I took Croom's last 2 years, Mullen's first and last 2 years and thus far through 2 years for Joe.

2007 - 21.5 PPG total; 19.6 SEC Only
2008 - 15.2 PPG Total; 12.1 SEC Only
2009 - 25.6 PPG Total; 22.5 SEC Only
2010 - 29 PPG Total; 18.9 SEC Only
2016 - 30.4 PPG Total; 29.3 SEC Only
2017 - 32 PPG Total; 26.3 SEC Only
2018 - 28.5 PPG Total; 19.3 SEC Only
2019 - 25.5 PPG Total; 20.8 SEC Only

You obvioulsy see a noticeable improvement when Mullen took over from Croom. You also see a pretty big drop-off from Mullen to Joe, especially when you consider that 56% of the total SEC points came against Arkansas and Ole Miss last year. With that said, the Arkansas and ole miss game this year should give an opportunity to bring up the sec points per game.

I can't say I'm really surprised at this. Joe started out with what was largely Mullen's team for his first season. He did not have enough time to do very much damage to the team. That's a lot of the reason that Fitzgerald still looked quite a bit like the Fitzgerald of 2017. He was running like a Mullen QB in Joe's system. With Moorhead, it's looking like we have a coach that is somewhere in between Croom and Mullen. It remains to be seen if it's closer to Croom or closer to Mullen, but ultimately what we know is that Epstein didn't kill himself.

this is just not true. Look at the roster for Mullen's first two years. The talent far exceeds what we have now. Croom left Mullen a lot to work with. Mullen left a great defensive roster for one year and nothing else. Not defending JoMo's coaching, it's bad, but we don't have to make stuff up to criticize. Plenty legit there.

I’m not saying croom left it in bad shape or anything but it wasn’t good. Most of the players that Mullen had success with were guys from his first recruiting class and some jucos that Mullen signed. McPhee, Chris white, Vick Ballard.

Mullen inherited a good RB in Dixon and a good OL in sherrod. He did inherent some good talent on D with wright, Chaney, Charles Mitchell and Kyle love. But by year 2 the contributors were largely Mullen recruits. Mullen would have killed to inherit a QB situation with KT and Fitz.

Game plan, by good opposing teams (a few weeks in)

Stop Hill,

& Then attack the QB.

Seems to work for them

Not to mention, delay ... confuse the people reading the D from the sideline.

Don't disagree with this generally. Just saying Croom left a much better and more balanced roster than Mullen left Moorhead by a pretty wide margin I think. The O line across the board was so much better than what we have today and so much more talent on D. Can you imagine if we had KT and Fitz Mullen's first two years. Good Lord that would have been great to see.
