root against State if it benefitted the program overall? For instance, if we lose to Arkansas and the bowl streak is officially over, and you knew on good authority that Joe would return if he beat Ole Miss or be fired if he lost to them....would you, could you, root against us?

Have you ever? Like the Croom 45-0 loss game, or any other?

Not a chance. I don’t think joe is the right guy but I’d love to be proved wrong. And hell at this point beating Arkansas on the road and ole miss could probably be seen as improvement.

I won't actively root for us to lose. But if a loss produces a good result after the fact, I'll sigh and make the best of it.

In my view, no single game should ever be the cause of an employment decision. There is enough data in Moorhead's MSU portfolio to justify making a change at 6-6 or less. The product he has delivered for the last 2 years has been trending down throughout the tenure, with no evidence of improvement despite repeated announcements of his intent to "fix it." There are things that could be improved upon that do not require new athletes with new skills, nor even actually winning a game. These things are effort, hustle, intensity, work ethic, and obvious preparation by the coaching staff. The actual results on the field show that effort, hustle, intensity, and work ethic are declining, not improving. And the results from the 1st and 3rd quarters of games -- where plans and adjustments would be apparent -- show that whatever has been happening is inadequate and getting worse.

Our current staff is floating on a lifeboat of padded stats given up by merciful opponents after games are already decided. The ship sank in Tampa.

I think it’s very possible that whichever coach loses the Egg Bowl gets fired. And, honestly, if you’re ever in a position where you’re making that type of decision based on the result of one game, where anything can happen, with a bunch of 18-22 year old’s.. well, then the decision should probably already be made. If the 2017 Egg Bowl doesn’t happen, Luke isn’t our coach right now. The truth, though, is that both fanbases will judge the seasons through Egg Bowl lenses. It’s just the way it works. We handle our misery much better as long as the hated in-state rival is equally as, or more, miserable.

No. But I have to admit I was a little giddy getting blown out 45-0 bc I knew a change was coming.

Absolutely. It's very rare and it's not to that point yet. But I was pissed when Croom beat Arkansas in 2008 because I thought that game saved his job. Fortunately, I was proven wrong the next week.

In the 2008 Egg Bowl - I walked in wanting State to win. But once I knew it was impossible to win - I wanted them to pour it on. I was hoping for 60 so we would make a move.

I don't think Cohen will fire Moorhead after 2 years. The only way he fires Moorhead is if he has a coach in waiting like the Rick Ray/Ben Howland situation. With that being said, I'd like to personally welcome Urban Meyer.

If the team wants to win...I want to win. If they lay down because they want the coach to go...let's get it over with and move on to better things.

I have never seen an egg bowl that was a such a beating, get forgotten so easily. They dismantled us in every way you could be on that day, they were headed up and we were headed down, and the game was forgotten in 48 hours. Momentum in sports can be very fickle.

It was forgotten because he was fired. If he had stayed - it would have festered.
I know. My post was more of an added comment. If I had known what was going to happen beforehand, I'd have definitely rooted against us. It's just amazing to me that a loss like that wasn't allowed to linger. If LT was AD, it would have.

No and there is no reason too....

Rooting for your team to lose is not going to make it happen so why do it?

No... and to slightly jump the gun, what confidence do we have in the IB to find the right person.... he failed miserably on this choice.

I see that some folks are getting riled up, but if we lose to Ark on Saturday, I would describe an Egg Bowl beating as being more along the lines of putting Ol Yeller down rather than rooting against your team

In other words, it’s not a hope for failure. It’s a humane way to end suffering

I did not root against us in the Croom Egg but when the game ended, I didn't feel bad at all as I knew what was coming. I'm sure I will feel the same way this time if it plays out as you suggest even tho I'm not as confident he will be fired.

True, but we were praised in the media for the hire, and most fans and college football analysts thought we made a great hire. I'm still not convinced Joe won't succeed somewhere....I just don't think he is a fit for MSU or the SEC as a HC.

If the Joe Moorhead era has taught me anything, it's that MSU needs a disciplinarian, developer over a "recruiter" as HC. Surround yourself with recruiters, and coaches they want to be buddies with if you'd like, but I want a hard nose HC. Others may disagree, but that's my opinion.

If we aren't competitive against Ole Miss at home this year bet your check Cohen makes a change. That would likely mean we got beat by Ark as well and beat ACU in front of 30k fans. The Egg Bowl could be the worst attended Egg Bowl in a decade. Maybe like 45k.

I want what's best for MSU. I think Moorhead can be a good coach. Eventually. He's just not ready to be a head coach in the SEC or probably anywhere P5 right now. I'm not sure he's ready for a G5 head coaching job. He's clearly missing out on some of the little things and I think a few more seasons under a good head coach would probably do wonders for him. I think he received some bad feed back by being at Fordham and not realizing how much the players took care of themselves as far as attention to detail and preparation, and then having elite talent at the skill positions in his two years at PSU. There was no reason for him to realize there were things he was not taking care of the way he should.

All that said, once the bowl streak is over, I think the best thing for state is to move on to the next coach. If that requires an egg bowl loss, an egg bowl loss is a temporary thing compared to another year and recruiting cycle with a lame duck coach.

I'd like to think he learned his lesson. Do you throw everyone who makes a bad decision to the wolves? Jeremy Foley hired Ron Zook and Will Muschamp. Was he a bad AD?

I think Cohen knows now, specifically, what he has to look for. I doubt he will listen to the national 'experts' as much anymore.
