Dan built a program and its being dismantled brick by brick. Offensive Genius my ***.
I told everyone last year this was a bad hire and y’all said he just needs time to get his players in place for his offense to click. What’s your excuse now? It’s time but he’ll be back. Sucks.

Next week is a very, very big game for him for more than one reason. If he loses he will be .500 after 22 games. Considering what he inherited last season and who we've played so far this season, that's really 17ing hard to believe.

I think the “fire Mullen” crowd was about as big as the “keep joe” crowd, and everyone else thought / thinks they are idiots

Let me explain this group further, since I am/was in it (and so is/was Cohen).

We all liked Mullen but he never could finish the job, for multiple reasons. This has been well documented here. After he left, the desire for a guy like Moorhead was to install a system that could win those big games, thus we felt he needed time.

No one ever dreamed he’d be this bad.

His D-day (or month) is here. It will play out.

It’s becoming obvious that a guy like Mullen is the perfect coach for MSU, but we’ve got to eliminate the job searching and lack of recruiting. In other words, we need a guy who digs in and signs the Cam Newtons, the CJ Johnsons, the AJ Browns.

Those players take Mullen to the next level here but alas, he never did it.

That’s the deal, put simply.

Bring home HUD.

Mullen's results are the ceiling for MSU football. If the "job" that needs to be finished is winning the SEC or a National Championship then we will never have the right guy.

You also said for 7 of Dan’s 9 years he needed to go. Not that you’re wrong this time. Clearly you should’ve left Dan’s horse alone.

There was an article on 247 about the number of 4 and 5 star kids on playoff teams and it was pretty enlightening. Of course, you could have a fluke year and a team with less talent gets in there, but typically you'd need way better results on the recruiting trail than what we've ever seen.

Dan held himself back with his job searching and pouting and recruiting deficiencies. He still was/is 5x the coach we have now. Moorhead looked like a great hire, so I don't fault Cohen for it. Having said that, unless Joe completely changes his offense, he is a terrible fit here. I don't expect the guy to change his stripes either. Thus he will most likely be gone after next season. Perhaps he should be released now, but that isn't going to happen. There are just too many excuses for him this year that may or may not be valid. I've seen all I need to know though, and this mistake will end in late November 2020. Rutgers could do all parties a huge favor and take Joe away from Mississippi this November.

Nobody wanted Mullen fired during year two. And very few ever wanted Mullen fired, at least until they got tired of watching him lose egg bowls because he was job hunting every year.

Mullen wasn't loyal and that grew thin over time. But Mullen was competent, which is more than what we can say today.

I think the party line is going to be that "it was just a bad situation that didn't work out, but he's still a good coach" if they hire him. And let's face it, if you're Rutgers, it's not exactly like a lot of good coaches are going to be lining up to take the job. That's probably the worst P5 job in the country.

Mullen is loyal to Mullen......and Mullen wants to win a NC. If you hire someone that's not looking for his day @ the podium then you've got the wrong guy even if you're a way point. I'm fine w/ 'disloyality' in this sense.

That said, I'm not sure what the 17 Cohen/<head are looking for.

We had one shot to build on Mullins success...

Unfortunately we blew it and will now start over from ground zero. We are not like the more elite programs that can go through a bad one or two and maintain some momentum. What dan built has evaporated. We are now back at croom level.

Why do you overlook the fact that he missed on at least one player per year that could have been a difference maker for us? Most of that was plumb arrogance, or job shopping. Not to mention that he bailed on his own TAILOR-MADE team in 2018.

We finished in the top 15 in 2010, with Cam Newton we contend for a title.

We finished in the top 10 (or close) in 2014, with C.J. Johnson, Jermaine Whitehead and the numerous offensive linemen we gave up on over the years, we contend for a title.

We were very capable of winning more in 2017 and 2018, and with a few more wide receivers (cough A.J. Brown) and missed linemen, we likely get close.

It was all there for us. Of course it was the same story with Jackie. Always one player away. A QB in 1999, etc. It just seemed like Mullen had it, then dropped it, numerous times.

No it was 2014 when we lost to Ole Miss and GT to end the season. Dan was trying to leave and gave up on the team, but he couldn't find a job and came back. Rinse Repeat for next 3 years.
I had questioned him before that, but maybe I was wrong.

I agree. I've never felt this uneasy about a coach in my life. Not even Croom. Joe has lost the team completely and the team is regressing every week.

Not really, Dan could have been even better. If you had Dan the coach as he was, BUT also was a guy who actually liked to recruit, didn't run his DC off every stinking year, and didn't constantly prostitute himself out to other schools to be hired away, THEN that would be the ceiling for MSU football.

Not overlooking anything. We will never have a coach that wins all these recruiting battles. Sure Mullen isnt the best recruiter but Mississippi State isnt exactly an easy place to recruit to. Ole Miss. LSU, Bama, and Auburn are always going to get players we want regardless of our head coach. Also as much as we criticize Mullen for not having top 20 classes how about the 2 and 3 stars that he put in the NFL? Mullen knew how to do more with less. At MSU, we have less than almost everybody in the SEC and the only way that will ever change is to get one of the best coaches in the country and hold on to him for 15 or 20 years.

Croom was the gold standard for ****** coaches. Moorhead will be long gone before he attains that level.
