Moorehead recruiting

I keep seeing people talk about improved recruiting. Honestly, it seems marginal to me.

2009 - 18
2010 - 30
2011 - 41
2012 - 22
2013 - 24
2014 - 36
2015 - 18
2016 - 28
2017 - 24
2018 - 27
2019 - 24
2020 - 20

Mullen had an average ranking of 26.7 compared to 23.6 for moorehead. That factors in a bad ranking in 2011, which may have been one of Mullen’s better classes. This featured a 3 star Dak and josh Robinson, and 2 star Preston smith, Darius slay and B. McKinney. Marginally improved recruiting is not even close to a reason to keep him.

I think it should also be noted that Ole Miss' sanctions and or the threat of

sanctions the last few years have had to have helped us in state with a few guys. But let's face it. We have taken almost ZERO advantage over them at a time it appeared they were in disarray. They will finish very close to or ahead of us in the rankings this year. That's unacceptable when they have what's essentially an interim head coach.

Time will tell us what some of his guys are going to ultimately become, but if we’re talking raw recruiting rankings, the improvement is absolutely marginal. A couple things to also consider would be that the 2020 class ranking will almost certainly drop some by the time everyone’s finished, and then I think you also have to think about the complete whiffs that we’ve recently had on transfers. Whether they be Jucos or grad transfers, they’re a critical part of plugging holes in the roster, and Moorhead hasn’t even gotten a foul tip to date. He’s striking out

You can only refer to 2019 when evaluating Joemo crootin. 2018 he was trying to hold together Mullens last class. 2020 ain't in the bag yet. I kinda like what he did in 19 but it's just one year.

I do think he’s done some good things to help positional balance. Mullen had years where he would sign like 4 TE’s and no RB’s.

We probably missed some opportunities with the 2019 class, but it was still a good class overall.

He has not drastically improved our position in recruiting, but we certainly haven’t fallen off either. If anything we are recruiting a little bit better.

I don’t think recruiting is that big of a deal in the fire/keep decision though. If he can’t win then recruiting won’t matter. Similarly, if he doesn’t recruit well but wins anyway, nobody will care.

Agree on all points. I wish we had seen some JUCOs in the 2019 class, especially at DT. We missed a few of those in the high school ranks too.

I'm not a recruiting guru, but rankings dont tell the whole story. In a world where the rich keep getting richer, you can have a much better recruiting class than in previous years and actually be ranked lower.

Our 2019 class had probably the highest rating per player than any previous class, but we didnt sign a full class. Plus we had quite a few JUCOs, which some services dont even rank. But it was just 1 year.

Still too early to compare Moorhead and Mullen in recruiting. I'd wait at least until till this cycle is over.

I don't think there were any good juco DT available last year. He got the transfer from Louisville who is spose to be good but they won't clear him for this year. We gotta get up in the teens on our recruiting every year to get really competitive. Still gotta coach them but 4 and 5 stars generally will beat 3 and 4s. (See Alabama) Plus you get depth for when **** falls apart like this year.

Middleton was good at EMCC but we were not going to get him from Tenn. Crawford from JCJC would have given us depth, which we needed. Not a world beater but depth piece

I know we don't like the on-field results so far, but our talent profile has improved from 2015 to 2019. That includes players recruited by Mullen and Moorhead. In fact, 2019 is the first year in a long time our team talent profile is better than Ole Miss according to 247. I know they weren't any good last year, but on paper they had more talent based on where the players on their roster were rated as recruits. You can argue that Moorhead isn't getting enough out of those recruits (so far), but the talent we are bringing to campus is still trending up.

Is 2011 not the best recruiting class in modern MSU history? It's definitely the best on that list. Not saying rankings dont matter at all, but I assume this place was livid with that ranking at the time. Same would be true for most SEC fanbases, of course, but that's a pretty good example of why you shouldnt decide to keep or dump a coach based on recruiting rankings.

The difference between State and top recruiters in the SEC is 4- and 5-star players. Going back to 2001 (only data available), 2018-20 includes more 4- and 5-star signees/commits than any other 3-year period. This includes the program's first ever 5-star offensive lineman. I realize some 2020 commits may end up not signing. Some more could be added as well.

Same thing with Tennessee. I know we all think we were the better team and they were playing like crap but they have recruited very well the last 4 or 5 years. There is some talent on that team if dopey Pruitt can get them all marching in the same direction.

This is the type of info I was referring to above. Recruiting rankings are still not a science, but Moorhead appears to be signing higher rated individual players than Mullen did. Even Moorhead's 3 star signees are higher rated individually than Mullen's were. This isn't necessarily reflected in the overall rankings, because the top programs are still killing us on 4 and 5 star players, but we are signing higher ranked players than before

But you still have to see if the recruiting rankings pan out. Mullen was adept at finding under-rated players and developing them into SEC caliber players. If Moorhead is signing over-rated players and not developing them, then that's not very helpful.

In true Danny fashion, he could not finish that class. Letting CJ Johnson and Jermaine Whitehead get away was a travesty and simply a lack of effort.

True. 2019 Team Talent Composite, which accounts for attrition and transfers, has Tennessee as the 16th most talented team in the country. State is 23rd. Nobody thinks they're the 16th best team in the country, but their problem is not getting talent to Knoxville. They have 4 5-stars and 32 4-stars on their current roster. We've never had that many in either category.

I think he has improved the recruiting in the sense that the classes are more spread out and gets recruits across all positions. I feel like Moorhead has a plan and they start recruiting earlier and hard. Mullen always felt like “we’ll get who we get and figure it out later”. He would load up on one position or one side of the ball. Or he would just forget about one position entirely. Didn’t he go 2 classes in a row without signing a single WR? Or remember when we had to move Rufus warren to tack because we didn’t have enough lineman? There was also never a backup if we lost a recruit and it felt like we were always limping into signing day. I do like that the Moorhead recruiting cycles have seemed to run relatively smooth and our signing days have been quiet without drama (Knock on wood)

One other thing to note is that there are more 4 and 5 star players now than in years past. Because basically, these websites are a business. And the more schools you have signing better players then the more excited fans will be and more likely to get interested in recruiting. The recruits are their products. Why only have a few products when you can have a lot.

How do you seem displeased with the last two recruiting years in which you credit JoMo with 20 (3rd best class in those years) and 24 (a 3-way tie for 4th best class) and feel he’s doing worse than Mullen?
