Not because state would fire him, but because he thinks State might fire him and he’d jump at a lessor job before that happens. Feldman knows something.

Then from a good friend who is an extremely knowledgeable football dude:

On Bill Clark..

I hope they hire him so Auburn doesn’t.
He will win over there, too. Not championships but Dan Mullen-level.
Moorhead was a really, really dumb hire. YES, the dude knows football and is probably a talented offensive coach. But he is a total fish out of water over there. It’s a horrible fit.
They literally chose him over Jeremy Pruitt. I know some of you are like ... yeah, Pruitt is terrible at UT, they should’ve hired neither. But frankly, for the same reason Moorehead was bad over there, Jeremy would be great: FIT.

Not sure I agree on Pruitt. But I agree on Moorhead and Clark

Ive spoken with someone who has intricate knowledge of the Pruitt interview for the State job. Remember when he didn’t know what asparagus was? Let’s just say that kind of lack of knowledge wasn’t uncommon throughout the process. We passed over Pruitt cause his interview was atrocious.

some other interview notes: We tried to get Ryan Day first and that didn’t work. Pruitt and Moorhead were next. Moorhead nailed his interview.

I know it’s weird to say this, but I will still say that the Moorhead here wasn’t a bad one. He had the right resume of what we needed. We just didn’t realize that he’d be this in over his head, in the program management phase of things. Its not working out, but the resume was there.

I can agree with your thoughts on Moorhead. His style would probably work great at an Ivy League school or the like. He needs highly intelligent, self motivated types. With the type of players that you are dealing with in the SEC, the coach needs to be an alpha. My biggest surprise though is how stubborn Moorhead is about running his offense.

You’re right. I’m definitely a rare breed around here. There’s only 40 of 41 top posts that either want him fired or discussing who people want. I apologize. .... *

I think it would be hilarious if Joe leaves and goes to Boston College and in 2 years has them in the top 20 and we hire Clark or Hudspeth and he fails miserably. I would hate it for the program but it would be pure gold for this Forum. Of course none of us remembering all the complaints about Dan's offense or what a dick he was.

What in the world does winning at BC have to do with us? He won plenty of games at Penn State. It's not working out here. What he does elsewhere is wonderful and irrelevant.

No one seems to remember how the media praised our hire of JOMO as the best of the offseason. It appeared we had hit a home run. Hindsight is 20/20.

Mullen won 9 games in year 2 with Relf at QB.

Let me know what JoMo does this year.

Mullen was a tipped pass against LSU from going to a bowl his first season with Tyson Lee and Croom’s leftovers.. Moorhead took a 10 (possible 11 with a bowl) win team and won eight with one of the best running qbs in SEC history. Not to mention one of the best defenses I’ve ever seen.

Somebody please take this football genius off our hands.

You suck man and so do the 3 people who liked this. Do you care more about joe moorehead or Mississippi state. I personally don’t care who the head coach is as long as they win. If joe turns it around that is great.

The only downside to this would be if Shrader went with him. Here's to hoping he has fallen in love with MSU or something like that.

I guess worst case scenario is we still have Thompson, Mayden and Rogers. New coach could do alright with that.

If you're gonna give Mullen credit for being a tipped pass from a bowl then you need to give Moorhead credit for being two dropped passes from 10-3. Mullen at best would have won 10 games, no way he wins 11, and there's no guarantee Mullen would have won 10 as Kentucky, Florida, and Iowa all had good run defenses and we'd be fussing at Mullen for not passing enough.

That said, after the Tennessee game I'm finally ready for a new head coach next season.

The stubborness is certainly infuriating. A good coach should always be of the mentality "we will fit the offense to the players and not vice versa"

I'm starting to think Moorhead just isn't HC material at any P5 school unless its like a Vandy or Wake Forest or somewhere whose student athletes are of the ilk that they sort of keep themselves in check because most come from upper middle income suburban homes and have to meet high academic standards to get in. He worked well at PSU because he just ran the offense and Franklin did all the dirty work of running the program and doing the necessary discipline and demanding the accountability. You really need thick skin and a big stick to run most of these P5 programs these days.

To be fair, there are lots and lots of fans who hate Moorhead with an obsessive passion at the moment, and it is justified 120%.

I think most MSU fans like Moorhead personally but aren't blind to the fact that he is doing a very poor job running the program. And the biggest issue is the lack of production from the offense which is his specialty. The ironic part too is that the offense hasn't had to deal with suspended starters like the defense has.

I don't think "hate' for JoMo has anything to do with it. We hate/really really dislike that he is the current head coach at MSU.

Most of us would like - maybe even 'love' - another one.

It would still be well worth it. On the other hand, would garrett really want to leave the SEC after proving he can play at this level to start for a lower tier non P5 or even a FCS team?

True I have never met the man but have no reason to dislike him personally. I have ample reason to dislike him professionally or at least his professional performance. Neither of these scenarios conflict with the other.

i really don't think Shrader would go anywhere. With this much starting time, he will be more than likely the starter no matter who comes in. or he could redshirt next season and Thompson could play if Moorhead is gone. I highly doubt Moorhead will get fired after this year. I just don't think they will. He might leave to go somewhere a little easier and back more home to the Northeast. He seemed pretty adamant about trying to make it work here though. So i'm not really sure if he would go if offered or not. It may be up to his family.

Pruitt has some of the worst post game press conference’s I’ve ever watched. Not only does he immediately throw players and assistants under the bus, in order to make sure that he doesn’t get the finger pointed at him.. he also just comes across as stupid. Granted, he’s making more money in a 3-year stretch than I will in a 40 year career, so he’s done something right, but he is terrible at a podium.

From a rival fan’s perspective - Moorhead was a good hire, at the time. His resume made other fanbases nervous, and we all knew he inherited a great roster. But, there was hope that he’d be such a bad fit that it just wouldn’t work, but it was a hope, not an expectation. I’m not sure if Moorhead will figure it out or not. I understand everyone’s frustrations.. but I think Pruitt would have been a train wreck, and Cohen wouldn’t get as much of a pass if he was, as he does with Moorhead. The way Moorhead carries and conducts himself, along with his resume, makes him a night and day better hire. But, as all of us who make hires from time to time know, you never REALLY know how someone will work out until they’re performing and either working out or not.

This is what I've been saying this past week (I was a supporter until now). Plus Penn State also (mostly) has those type of players.

You can’t really count the Florida game. It was a 13-6 game so the dropped pass just ties the final score. But that was so early in the half, it might not determine that we would have won that game.

No it wasn't. We led 6-3 and would have put us up 13-3 and it would have been nearly over. Mullen had to hit the trick play to go up 10-6 after that.

But they did hit the trick play. And the drop happened at the start of the 3rd, right after the INT from their opening possession in the second half, I believe. They scored the TD the following possession. Sure we don’t know if that would have been the difference in the game but it was way too early to say for sure that it meant anything more than both scoring 13 in regulation. Way too much time left in the game to say that would have been enough to win. They also punted 3 times the second half in our territory instead of pushing/going for it because they didn’t believe we could score again. Just too much time and opportunities left to say they don’t add more points as well.
