The human side of coaching...

I did not watch Joe's presser yesterday but from the report I heard he apparently got a little up close and personal with his remarks.

Now none of that really changes his situation but it does remind me that while we fans often let our emotions get the best of us and call coaches garbage, POS, whatever, we often forget that the target of our insults is a human being with feelings just like everyone else and is also probably trying to do the best that he can . I'm sorry to say I have been guilty of this myself. Someone who beats up a kid or robs people is a POS, not a football coach who isn't good at his job. . This is not to excuse the outcome for which he is being paid 30X more than most of us to achieve and must be held accountable for. But it does make one rethink the acceptability of doing so in a hateful, demeaning manner and while Joe is a big boy and can probably take it let me say it is NEVER OK to yell out to a man's kid and tell her that her dad sucks.

My opinion of Joe's performance has not changed. He has failed miserably as our HC and I have little confidence that he has the ability to turn it around. Even if he is willing to completely change the way he does things I have little faith that such change would be successful because I think he is in over his head and needs to be replaced. I hope we can get that done and keep the without so much vitriol.

First of all, there is no "we fans" here. I have never said that type of stuff about a coach.

And honestly, I am skeptical that it was really ever said. We know Croom made up stuff that didn't happen, and certainly embellished what did happen.

He stated his daughter was told her dad sucks. He said yeah, he did suck that day. To me he sounded like he was almost admitting he was in over his head.

Well referring to the fanbase in general certainly was not intended to imply that everyone is guilty of something. If that is how you took it I want to say that is not what was meant. I don't know what was and wasn't said to Croom. I read with my own eyes on this message board people referring to coaches in a pretty vile manner so I know that happens. And you know what, its a free country and I will defend their right to do that. Don't have to agree with its appropriateness though.

The start of that press conference was very odd. It looked as if he was about to cry at times. I can understand him being upset that his daughter was upset. But damn man you gotta hold it together better than he did yesterday.

With that said, people need to be able to separate coaching from personal. Joe seems like a good man and very nice guy. He’s just not succeeding as head coach at Mississippi State.

Yeah, I don’t know what it is about college sports that makes some idiots suddenly feel that talking crap to or about a guy’s family is ok, but that completely out of bounds to me no matter what the circumstances are. If some dude seriously said that to his daughter, his jaw might not work the same afterwards if I saw it

All that said, I’ll say again that I think SEC football is probably just the wrong profession for Joe. He’s smart, likeable, and seems to be an all around good dude, but that just doesn’t fly in this league. I honestly feel that you have to be a bit of a jackass and a cheat(or at least look the other way) in order to win in this conference. If you’re gonna try to do things “the right way”, god help you

I don't know where coaches families sit for games... but if they were in normal seats with the rest of us Saturday, she would have certainly heard a few drunk people yelling it after the game.

Or she could just read it on twitter, facebook, SPS, etc.

Well apparently you have to have a certain type of personality to be a head coach at this level And this league. It is 100 percent alpha male, screw you if you don’t like me type of mentality but this is the way it is while still being able to teach players and coach them up to their highest potential. Very few people I would think are capable of having this mindset as it seems as though they are almost opposing mindsets.

Jo is a people pleaser but man to be a head coach I just don’t know if he is ruthless enough. He seems like he would be a ‘give you the shirt off his back’ type of person. I don’t think Mullen was like that. He was more of a jerk probably. On the flip side and ironically Mclwain at Florida seemed like he was more like Jo. Just a thought as I think about what’s happened here.

exactly my question. you are going to hear all kinds of stuff in the stands. i can't believe a coach would make a big deal about that.

That is true and I certainly understand this. I had a sibling in coaching and I heard things said more than once in the stands. I think the line is crossed if you actually speak directly to a family member. The way I heard it was that was what was done.

I would like to know how many people taunted his daughter. I'm willing to bet it was one isolated teenager. He should never have mentioned it. It's like Nixon's Checkers speech...intended to draw sympathy. As another human being, I actually feel sorry for the guy because he apparently is in way over his head. At the same time he is is earning millions of dollars. It's a damn mess

My guess as well. No telling what they hear in school though as kids can be cruel.

That's why they pay you life changing money to do it.

I have a close relative whose job makes him rack up frequent flier miles like he's a pilot for Qantas.. It plays hell with his home life. And trust me... he doesn't do it for the beautiful vistas out the oval windows and the sound of rolling luggage on the jetways.

This is the way i took what he was saying. I thought he said his daughter was on the sidelines and heard people yelling saying he sucked.

That’s not the way I took it, but regardless, why would you yell that anyway? It’s the equivalent of booing your own team. If one is that type of fan, I’m surprised one would stay until the end of that game period.

As a SEC head coach he does suck. As a father, husband, or human being he may be pure gold. Problem is he's not being made a millionaire for his parenting skills. He's being made a millionaire for his coaching skills and they suck.

People yell that all the time at games, in the living room in front of the tv, and on this forum.

After reading the online CL article it sounds like it could have been UT fans shouting at them as they left the field. Did Moorhead say specifically that it was State fans ? This whole story has a funny smell to it IMO.

dont pity this man. he is enriching himself at our expense. attacking his family is not cool, but its his failure that has put him in that situation.
