OXFORD, Miss. (WMC) - Ole Miss officials are asking students to be sensitive when making Halloween costume choices this year.

A letter was sent to students, faculty and staff this week, asking students to avoid "culturally inappropriate behavior."

The letter comes after an Ole Miss honors student self-reported to the Bias Incident Response Team that he posed in blackface on a social media account.

That student is now going through the school's "restorative justice process," allowing him to engage with groups impacted by the post.

The letter also reminds students that social media posts are never private, and that irony and sarcasm do not come across as intended online.

Probably knew it was about to come out, so was trying to get ahead of it. And yeah, Kotter is right, this is beyond ridiculous.

It's like they've stepped off in quicksand and the more they struggle the further they sink. Sad **

Its hilarious to read that the guy self reported, but a student that is stupid enough to ever go blackface clearly needs some education/training so this is a good thing.

I do wonder what would have happened if the student hadnt self reported. So a picture is found on social media and then what? It isnt illegal to go blackface, its just insensitive and 17ing stupid. Would the student have had a worse punishment had they not self reported? And if they would have a worse punishment, why would they?...is it something in a student handbook that would make it a punishable offense even when off campus and not tied to the school? If thats the case, that is disappointing because people shouldnt have to answer to a school when not at the school or representing the school.
Of course if it was a fratboy and its at a party or something, then that is different from off campus and not tied to the school.

I would not be surprised if that's indeed the case. Apropos of that, Southern Miss revoked scholarships from band members who participated in their infamous Green Card chant when the Eagles played Kansas State in the NCAA Tournament in 2012.

The news lists him as a 'he', so I think we can stop with the 'they'.

Would the student have had a worse punishment had they not self reported? And if they would have a worse punishment, why would they?...

But I will say, it fits right in with this whole story.

Should Dave chapel go through it for going as white face?

Should we really not distinguish between comedy/satire and serious use?

But really, Dave Chapelle has been lit the 17 up for almost 2 decades now, due to his use of racial and social stereotyping. Some love it, some hate it. Some recognize itnas humor, others dont find it funny.
Also, that was 16 years ago and social acceptance has changed some.

Bless your heart if you cant distinguish between performance and life.

This was funny then, and it is funny now.

The problem, to ME, is that blackface will ALWAYS be tied to its original intent, which was to demean and degrade black folks, which SHOULD have been unacceptable in any era, and in any form. There is such a vast gulf between comedy intent and malicious intent. We all used to understand that much better than we do now, and that's unfortunate.

I think the biggest problem in all of this, aside from the idiots who really ARE intentionally degrading another race, is that we are applying permanent, life-altering punishments to people who did stupid things as kids.

Just my opinion, and I could be wrong.

And for the record I could care less if Dave chapelle dresses up like a cracker and calls himself paindonthurt.

My feelings are strong and tough. I am not weak or a victim.

And 16 years ago? So?
So you disagree with going after white politicians who did it 40 years ago?

What’s my point? There is a huge double standard when it comes to being offended.

It's all performance. I doubt that kid put on black face in an attempt at "serious use." If he had dressed in black face to commit a fraud or circumvent a law, or gain an advantage of some kind, then you would have a point. If he dressed in black face as part of a costume or a prank, then it's no different than what Chappelle did; he just didn't have the forum that Chappelle had.

Remember when a lady tanned herself and changed her hair to pretend to be black and ended up running a local chapter of the NAACP? Where was the outrage on that? Oh....there can't be outrage because she decided to "identify" as black. So, what if this kid decided to identify as black? Would it change the argument?

I'm not defending it...it's in poor taste. But there are too many holes in both sides of the argument, and in the meantime, the constant desire to find something to be offended with, and the weaponization of labeling people because you don't agree with them over something has to stop. I mean, SJWs ruined a kid's life in Iowa by going through years-old social media postings after he raised millions for a children's hospital.

When does the insanity stop?
