You’ve got to believe though that the networks want more people to stay home. Less butts in the seats more eyes on the screen.

Preach on, Governor. If memory serves, State home games were mostly at 1:30 PM. I remember getting lights at Scott field. If I also recall correctly the season began a little later in September. Another thing you did not mention was scheduling. To cram 6 home games in, we often get 2-3 home games in a row. That is another gripe I have. If you have a life outside of football season, you often have to pick what games to attend. A five hour round on the road trip is tough to do three weeks in a row.

As always, you are spot on! Thanks!

I remember, growing up, football season began the third Saturday in September. Didn't seem as hot back then.

In the future we will pay for a virtual reality broadcast from wherever you can afford to view the game from within the stadium and an astral projection of your physical being will be beamed to the stands.

I can remember the days when we had NO air condition in school and the coach stood by the door before practice forcing you to take 3 salt tablets. Water, just enough to wash the the dust out of your mouth.

It seems like the only the the SEC has going for it these days is that China doesn't give a 17 about the SEC

Same with me, and it wasn't as hot, at least not as hot as it was this year. We'd wear coats and ties to games and it wasn't all that uncomfortable. Of course, we only had a couple of actual home games at the time with the "good" ones all being in Jackson.

Even with all the added SEC cashflow, Mississippi State, at least, kept raising prices and adding levels of inconvenience associated with attending games until the bubble burst.

Perfect analysis. To me, everything that Byrne started, ended when Striklin left. But Striklin screwed us on the way out and then screwed us in his after life.

To be honest, the way television and money have changed college football I'm seriously considering moving it down my list of sports priorities. We may all share in the revenue, but it has changed everyone's mindset about what is a good program and we are all chasing blue blood, cash cow programs we will never catch with just a good coach and decent recruiting.

There is no patience that will allow a coach to change things over time. No matter the circumstances, if you have a ****** season you are on the chopping block. 7 or 8 wins is "mediocrity" and unacceptable. If you talk about having patience and building you are a sunshine pumper. Meltdowns are the new normal. And if your coach tries to hang with the big boys in recruiting, you get smashed by the toothless NCAA UNLESS you happen to be a cash cow, then allegations are never even investigated.

At least pro ball has some things built in to make things stay somewhat on an even keel as far as talent goes.

It used to be fun to watch games other than my team every Saturday. Now, the Bamas, OSUs, and Clemsons rule the roost as they play **** teams until conference time and then they are given the marquee spots to keep the spotlight for themselves and never let another program share in the limelight. That CBS hold is only there to make sure they get the best blue blood in the spotlight when another matchup of the middle of the pack teams might actually be a better game.

I'm just about ready to put college football at the same priority as my sports hierarchy as the NBA, MLB, and the NHL... not to far above women's golf.

This is not just a SEC issue. The Pac-12 is playing a game every Friday night & the Big 10 is discussing the addition of a Friday night game. Friday night games are horrible for fans & the conflict directly with high school games which impacts a significant portion of the potential fan-base. Television needs almost an equal number of kickoffs at noon eastern, mid-afternoon, & evening to make the $ work.

Basketball games every damned week night @ 6:00 & 8:00 is tough for anyone driving more than an hour and every major conference is doing it. We used to play midweek games on Wednesday at 7:00. 6:00 games mean that I need to leave work in Jackson mid-afternoon at the latest & an 8:00 game means best case that I get home to the Flowood area at midnight.

SEC schools are getting +/- $35 million each annually from the TV rights package (CBS/ESPN/SECN) which is financing this crazy facilities arms race along with these insane coaches salaries in the major sports.

This is a complex issue because the schools now require the TV money. Surely though some intelligent people from a combination of Athletics, television, and fan bases can find some simple solutions to reduce the number of noon & 2:30 kickoffs in September in the Deep South.
