Honestly, his position seems really well thought out. Interesting to hear his take since he’s apparently a member of Cherokee Nation.

I guess he doesn't like the KC Chiefs or the FSU Seminoles then. The chop isn't nearly as bad as a team being called the Redskins. The chant gets a little old after hearing it endlessly though.

Given he’s an actual member of the Cherokee nation, I think his opinion is valid here.

The tomahawk chop doesn’t even originate from Cherokees. Florida State “Seminoles” first started the chop 40 years ago. The Braves adopted the chop when Deion Sanders started playing for them.

So, they played each other 12 or 13 times in the regular season, then 2 more in the playoffs and now that they're down 2-1, suddenly he's offended.

People can’t demand they go through life never feeling offended. It’s a shame when they weaponize it against people with good intentions.

I always thought a mascot named “Braves” was a show of respect to the Indian heritage. He paints it as a mocking gesture. It is not. If it was the “lazy fat Indians”, I could understand his point. Do the Irish feel like the “Celtics” mascot is a demeaning Irish people? I think not. Redskins might have been a term of respect. I don’t know.

Of course the whole blackface debate is arguably a demeaning gesture.

Pretty sure he said this before game 1. I could be wrong though.

For the record, I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with him. I’ve always thought what the Braves and Florida state (and probably others) is respectful of Indians. My only point is that this is the type of guy you want to have an opinion about this. He’s an actual member of a tribe. I have no problem with him saying this and you shouldn’t either. Who you should have a problem with is the idiot on twitter who couldn’t even tell you what sport the Braves play but call the Braves offensive. I think this guy has the right to say what he said and be listened to. That’s my only point. You don’t have to agree with him.

You legit couldn’t check the date on the article. 10/4. However I still dont care what he thinks of the tomahawk chop and I am a cardinals fan

The Cleveland mascot that they got rid of was offensive. I can see the name "Redskins" being offensive.

Chiefs, Seminoles, Indians, Braves....I don't see the names as offensive. They seem to be used more in a respectful way than a degrading one.

The tomahawk chop? I can't blame the guy for not liking it. But apparently the Seminole nation loves it, so opinions are split.

At the end of the day, it's all pretty meaningless. It's not going to bother me because I once saw a rapper wearing an Atlanta Crackers throwback.

Another snowflake. Get your panties out of a wad and quit looking for reasons to be offended.

The team got rid of their offensive mascot 'Chief Noc-a-Homa' a few decades ago for an obvious reason- its offensive as ****.

It's simply not necessary to use images or stereotypical chants of a racial/cultural minority whose history is rife with broken promises and death by those in positions of power.
It wouldnt be acceptable here to name teams after nicknames for Black, Asian, or Hispanic people. And it definitely wouldnt be acceptable to sing or dance in ways that imitate those cultures in a cartoonish way.
So why is it OK to do these things to Native Americans?

Also, you didnt read your own article very well. The guy is more disappointed than offended, by his own words, actually.

You must be a pretty delicate person for these words of a 25 year Oklahoman who you didn’t know existed a week ago have such an impact. I can tell you’re emotional and that’s okay. I just want you to know that your feelings are valid and and the important thing is that we work to understand they why behind your concern. And just because you’re feeling hurt by the words of this other person doesn’t mean you should feel bad. Don’t let anyone shame you. If they call you a snowflake just own it, because hey us dudes we here at sixpackspeak.com think you’re a pretty cool guy. 😎

Celtics aren’t demeaning to me as an Irish American, but Fighting Irish is, so I think they should shut that overrated ******** university down.

With your logic (which is obviously flawed), shouldn’t the Ragin-Cajuns and Vikings be un-acceptable? Both of those are loosely and nearly directly tied to a race/culture. I don’t hear any people from those two communities complaining.

Both of those communities (especially Cajuns) have a history of broken promises by those in positions of power. Your logic is flawed because these mascots are used as positive symbols of strength and victory, not used to demean or poke fun at those who are different. Cajuns are proud of their mascot, just ask Hadad.

I am not in a position to judge the validity of if an action or stereotype is offensive to another group.
If something ULL or the Vikings fans do to offend Cajuns or Norse folk, then sure by all means those actions/images should stop.

Just as I dont judge the validity of a group which is offended by actions/images depicting them negatively, I also dont judge the validity of a group which isnt offended by actions/images depicting them negatively.

This **** started when they went worst to first the year they played the twins in the World Series (17 you Kent Hrbek). It rears it's head every time the Braves look like they may make a run. Nobody gave a **** when the Braves we're finishing 20 games out of first place.

None of my family died along the Trail of Tears so it's above my pay grade to say how a Cherokee should feel. And as far it belonging to the Seminole tribe, they died alongside the Cherokee on that trail so they may very well have developed an interconectivity that still lingers in the tribes today. I agree with your feelings towards snowflakes, I just don't know that a man whose family barely survived genocide should be subject to such judgements.

Anxiously awaiting for someone in the Viking community to weigh in. My guess is the football team mascot isn’t nearly as offensive as the Capital One commercials

Who cares if it “might” be offensive. Society needs to grow a pair.

I am a white male and I could be offended every day if I chose to be. I’m not a victim though bc I CHOOSE not to be.

The bolded comment is in part why mistreatment(racism, sexism, etc) continues. It stems from a place of ignorance. The inability or unwillingness to try and walk in someone else's shoes to see that scenarios arent equal only perpetuates social unrest and inequality.
Though someone may not be able to be empathetic, they can still be sympathetic.

Being offended at various(typically insignificant) things in life while holding a position of power /= speaking out about being continually subjected to terms/ideas/stereotypes which are created and perpetuated by those in a position of power.

===I am not saying or even suggesting that paindonthurt is racist or sexist. I am simply saying that such an approach to handling issues of offense is in part why the issues continue.===

He literally says “It’s not me being offended” in the article.

If he’s not being offended then why is he bringing it up? I can’t tell you how many times I bring to light things that don’t offend me*** It’s a ***** move by him. He wants to bring attention to the Braves chop but wants someone else to carry the torch.

That's right. When we played cowboys and Indians as children, we didn't realize it nor would we have called it that, but it was in a respectful manner. They were thought of as being tough and brave. The term redskins has never been a respectable term though. It was popularized in the old western movies (and probably in the real old west) but was always demeaning, kinda like the stereotyping of Indians and alcohol.

Nothing wrong with team names like Braves, Indians, Seminoles, etc. Redskins is pretty bad though.

So if I’m offended as a white male, should those things change?

I mean saltine crackers are offensive to me. It hurts when I get called cracker and every time I see that box it kills me inside. It’s hard to get out of bed bc I’m scared I’m going to see that saltine box and remind me of all the bad times.

I’ve put myself in someone else’s shoes plenty. I treat people fairly and with respect. All people. Pisses me off when others don’t too actually.

But I also get pissed when people blame their problems on others.

AND THE 2019 VIRTUE SIGNALING AWARD GOES TO......

Funny term- virtue signaling. I have read about it since it's become a popular term to use as a pejorative over the last 4 or so years, yet I often dont understand how it applies to instances where it is used. It's as if many misuse it and/or dont understand the term.

vir·tue sig·nal·ing
noun
the action or practice of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue.

So you are saying that in posting those comments, I demonstrated my good character and/or good moral correctness?
Thank you for those kind words

The Braves name is offensive because it got its name from the corrupt Tammany Hall political party machine in New York.

The Braves, who played in Boston and Milwaukee before moving to Atlanta in 1966, trace their nickname to the symbol of a corrupt political machine. James Gaffney, who became president of Boston's National League franchise in 1911, was a member of Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party machine that controlled New York City politics throughout the 19th century. The Tammany name was derived from Tammamend, a Delaware Valley Indian chief. The society adopted an Indian headdress as its emblem and its members became known as Braves. Sportswriter Leonard Koppett described Gaffney's decision to rename his team, which had been known as the Doves, in a 1993 letter to the New York Times: "Wouldn't it be neat to call the team the ‘Braves,' waving this symbol of the Democrats under the aristocratic Bostonians? It wouldn't bother the fans." And it didn't, especially after the Braves swept the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1914 World Series.
