How you feeling today if you're one of the 5 that actually took time to apply and interview Wednesday and Thursday while outing yourself to your current employer that you're looking around... Bet those folks have a bad taste in their mouths.

It's really not a good look all the way around.

The IHL should be disbanded. Each University should have its own Board. The Medical center should be independent, also with its own Board. UM would be just as crazy, if not more so. But, at least we wouldn't be joined at the hip with these idiots.

Ill attempt to explain it as ive been told....

Can someone explain to me the IHL board like I am a 17ing dubmass? (Big stretch, I know...) I don't understand how this happens at all.

First off, let it be known, that the IHL board isn't full of UM folks....there are a few MSU grads that are very strong alums....

As I understand it, the IHL board was formed as a direct result of the Ayers ruling....making the historical black universities get a fair shake into the state budgets and treatment as the states traditional 'flagship' universities....(flagship, as defined by the legislature, is the three flagship universities, MSU, UM, and USM).....i guess given our states history and current makeup with so make historically black universities, that was needed.

I don't know if im missing something here, but i have a friend on the IHL board currently, and this is how he explained it to me in a round about way....

Getting rid of IHL, would mean getting rid of Ayers ruling...aint gonna happen

getting rid of the Ayers ruling would be like getting rid of Title IX in my opinion....in other words, nearly impossible.

Yep. About the only way around it would be a requirement passed along to the subsequent individual boards that they must follow the Ayers Mandate.

Edited to add: And even then, I don't think the universities want individual boards.

one umbrellas system taking care of all 4 year institutions. Ayers had more to do with equality in funding and admission practices. Truth be told, State and UM probably should have more flexibility and leeway than the others because they are so much different. But Ayers ruling and fear of another type suit will make that almost impossible.

Ideally MSU and UM could have their own board, with the other 6 falling under IHL. That is the model in Alabama. However, no way that would work in MS because everyone would think they need their own board, and HBCUs would file Ayers type suit re administration.

I will be the first to admit that I don't know all the history and workings of the IHL. But I am sure the IHL has been around before the Ayers ruling. Google "Labeuve Trustee" and you will find minutes from 1988 from the IHL. Ayers case settlement date was 2/15/02. So clearly, the Ayers case did not cause the formation of the IHL.

Further, there have been recent news about the winding down of the Ayers Settlement. See Mississippi Today from 9/12/17.

They are lucky to get this guy. Doesn’t seem like someone who will make drastic changes like removing the nicknames “Ole Miss” and “Rebels”

https://olemiss.rivals.com/news/parham-boyce-s-tenure-at-ole-miss-begins-with-look-of-down-the-hall-

"One of Boyce's first moves, per multiple sources, will be to bring Chip Pickering aboard in a vice chancellor role." Wow! Another Hugh Freeze type. Chip, the former member of Congress who touted his service as a Baptist missionary and family values man that trotted his wife and four young sons out for every photo opportunity possible in order to get elected, who then had an adulterous affair with a woman whose business interests were regulated by a Congressional committee that Pickering served on.

I am convinced that Boyce is a caretaker chancellor who was hired to groom Pickering to eventually take over as chancellor. I am glad the IHL board is full of Ole Miss hacks who are so focused on controlling Ole Miss that they leave MSU alone.

Wait...was that wrong? Should he not have done that?

You do hate to see it, because that is us when Keenum leaves.

I like to think that Keenum will be more strategic about it and we will have a good continuity plan in place when the time comes.

But hey, this is Mississippi State we're talking about here, so what do I know.

I'd like to think he has the political pull to get a decent hire in place, but with the current state of the IHL IDK man.

I don't think the IHL would want to monkey with anything that isn't broke. We don't have the problems that Ole Miss has. Like you siad, Keenum is connected, and he's very well respected. On top of that, he loves MSU to his core, and that's not even debatable. So, when the time comes, I expect that Keenum will have continuity planning and recommendations in place that will be respected by the IHL, and he's going to do everything within his power to set MSU up for success.

Yep. The IHL system has been around since 1944.

There was a mention of a Mississippi Today article on the Ayers settlement elsewhere in this thread but Ayers deals with not just funding (the focus of that article) but also admission practices which are IHL-wide and aren't going to change or end as long as MSU & Ole Miss are under the IHL.

Link to that Mississippi Today article from 2017: Here.

The three UA schools (Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Huntsville) share a board, but I believe every other school has their own independent BoT.

I think you're thinking of Louisiana. LSU has their own board, but all the other universities are under the same UL system.

Yes, I believe that is correct. Dr. Malcom Portera left as MSU president about 20 years ago to become Chancellor of the University of Alabama System. Not sure how long he remained in that position.

In actuality, the three schools are pretty independent of each other though.

I had planned to spend my afternoon watching a two hour display of madness, self-centered delusion, realistic violence, and a cast of zany characters. Instead, I decided to go watch Joker.

They changed the name from the College Board of Trustees to the IHL as a result of Ayers but essentially it is the same except Ole Miss no longer has higher representation that MSU (LaBauve Trust on ole College Bnard). The governor appoints all the IHL board members but defers to UM, MSU, & USM interests for a specific number of members that are basically allocated to each.

The Ole Miss folks would like to convince Dr Keenum to run for Congress or Senate promising support just to get him away from MSU under the guise of the Mississippi Republican party needs you in Washington, so they can screw up the MSU search & leave MSU with weak leadership again like we were from Zacharias until Keenum.
