Trying to back away from the ledge

Things that give me hope:
A lot of the busted defensive plays tonight were from freshmen making bad plays, that will happen, they’re young
Shrader moves the ball and is tough as nails. He’s gonna be good.

Things that make me think there is no hope:
The team’s continued love for stupid penalties. The opening delay of game was bad, but the delay of game on the punt was worse. This just makes me think we are completely ignoring the preparation for small things, such as player group exchanges. Points to a lack of control.
The constant smack talk/general acting like we are looking for a fight after the play is over. By all means be aggressive during a play, but when the play is over, shut up and get ready for the next one. Maybe if you are ready, you can hit someone hard legally instead of being a ***** and taking a cheap shot after the whistle or out of bounds.
The previous concerns are not new. They show up every game. They make me think we have no control in the locker room or on the field. Either the coach doesn’t care or the players don’t respect him. This is my biggest concern.
We look weak.

Summary: I hope we get better, we have some good things going, but I’m afraid no one is focusing on the little details that are crucial to winning. Joe is new to this, I hope he can figure it out.

"Joe is new to this" is getting old. He may be a smart man and a decent offensive coordinator but he is not a HC.

Shrader is a bright spot. Kylin is the stud we all knew he could be, and we're actually leaning on him this year. The WRs have improved. And.... that's about it for bright spots. Meanwhile, we make stupid penalties. We can't cover receivers. We can't cover punts or kickoffs. We can't tackle. We can't rush the passer. And I have no reason to believe that's going to get better.

As I said repeatedly last week, what Joe preaches does not translate to the team. At. All.

Not due to personnel losses at all?

EXACTLY!!!
So many young guys on that side of the ball between suspensions, the draft and graduation (depth). Shoop did not forget how to coach over the summer. If the offense was still the problem I would have concerns but it is not. And news flash the defense will get better and so will Shrader. We are recruiting at a higher level and working through the previous staffs poor roster management particularly on d line.
We have some fans that can only see the negative and do not understand that rebuilding years dohappen at programs like State.

I cannot think of one time that a head coach negated their own first down with a personal foul. That is asinine.

I’ve seen us do this over the past 40+ years of watching MSU football. And eerily reminiscent of Croom era. To have the ball 1st down at the goal line and jump off sides, go back 5yrds and then fumble the ball away just can’t happen. Not against really good teams. No that wasn’t strictly coaching fault, but to a degree it was because of the time spent having Schrader set the formation then stand there and look to sideline to get the play from the coaches. Damn just set the formation and run the play.

This continual requirement of QB having to look to the sideline for 15+ seconds is stupid. I know the principal behind it, but at the goal line a glance to the sideline is all that is needed and then hike the ball and either QB sneak it or let your stud running back run it. In that situation there is only about 3 plays that should be ran. And shouldn’t take 15 seconds to make that call. It lets the defense get set up for the play. Anger!
