I now know why JOMO's offense seems more productive

I think Nick was probably checking out of plays and running it because he couldn't throw it accurate enough. He was taking carries away from Aries and Kylin. It works much better when we can throw it much better too. KT has watched Nick do that for 2 years and he saw Nick get all the accolades and thought thats what I need to do to be successful. Problem, that's not what Joe wants and that's why you are seeing Schrader and Stevens emerge. They give the ball to a back unless its no choice but to tuck it and run. KT can do it if he'll listen to the coaches and forget how Fitz operated.

I think that's definitely a big part of it. We seem a lot more comfortable with the offense this year than we did last year. But we were productive on offense against average to bad defenses last year. The real test will come in SEC play.

Another factor is, this time last year, we were complaining about taking too long to snap the ball. Now that it’s expected, and it makes the offense seem more productive or efficient.

Lots of folks on here said that we didn’t have a coaching or playcallling problem, we had a QB problem.

That was an accurate take. Not Nick’s fault, not Jomo’s fault, just a fact.

This is horseshit. You call plays your players can execute. JoMo had an elite running QB and tried to make him be Peyton Manning instead of utilizing Nicks strengths. It’s certainly JoMos fault for not designing an offensive gameplay for his QB.

Last year we were incredibly undisciplined in every part of the game. You saw it most in penalties, but also in conditioning, execution, etc. That's also a fact and is 100% coaching.
And this year, we have played two patsies. We don't know anything about this team yet.

This is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read.

Tried to make Fitz a Peyton Manning? We ran the ball like 60% of the time. Do you understand? Unless you run the triple option, you can’t run every play.

We will all speak of this again after we have played a team or two

that can and does play defense.

The jury is still way out there for now.

2-0 is as good as it gets for now.

Last year was an excellent example of how difficult it is to retrain someone. Mullen had hammered a way of doing things for his qbs. There was a certain method to the way he called the plays and it centered around the qb doing things in a progressive order.

Then Joe came in and there was another way quite different. It also required the qb and the wr know how to react post snap. With only 15 spring practices and 15 fall, and our qb out for half of them it is no wonder the kid struggled. He defaulted to doing what he knew how to do. When the defense took that away, we struggled.

If was not some single person at fault, unless you wanted to blame Cohen for not offering Mullen more money than Florida to keep him.

Joe did what he could to appease the fanbase and team by adjusting his offense to something they could run, but I am certain that there was little he could actually do. He was hired to implement his offense. Not mullens

Let’s not get carried away yet. Two games in. The offense looked pretty good up to this point last season also. It appears to look better and changed with tommy’s accurate passing and handing it off more. We will see when the tougher defenses end the sec rolls around. We will get a better test Saturday. I am pleased so far with the accuracy and how well we have caught the ball. I’m also please with the running game being more running back centric. I do wish Tommy could scramble a little better when it’s not there but it’s a takeaway with the higher accuracy and timing. Just needs to work on his clock after 4 secs get rid of it or take off. Im also pleased with not having near as many dumb penalties which may be the payoff of the defense not bring as aggressive. Not sure yet but the offensive penalties are better. I want to see how we look with someone with a decent pass rush and corners. It definitely helps being more balanced. I however still agree that Moorhead should have adapted his system more last year to what he had. And directed more snd not given fitz the option but to give it off and tried throwing plays fitz could do. It is what it is now. Just hope he can continue to recruit what he needs to make his system work and like I said we will see how it goes against some sec fronts soon.

Watch Oklahoma and how much they have molded that offense around hurts. In my opinion. In 2017 fitz was better than hurts. Maybe not after injury. The best coaches can mold a system around who they have. Moorhead has his system and that appears to be as far as his offensive prowess goes.

He was hired to run AN offense and to win by whatever means necessary. I don’t care what kind of offense we run as long as it’s productive. Lots of coaches have trashed an offense if it doesn’t work for their personnel. Jo only adapted his offense one game last year. The rest was still all rpos and trying the deep ball even though he knew we couldn’t do it.

Here's our play count and breakdown for 1st 3 games last year...

71 plays 618 yds
66 plays 538 yds 8.15 yds/play
71 plays 607 yds 8.55 yds/play

This season so far...
70 plays 497 yds 7.1 yds/play
62 plays 386 yds 6.23 yds/play

Let's just cull last year's game 1 since it was FCS. We've run less plays for less yards at lesser yds/play than he did last season through 2 G5 games

1. The wide receivers just look more confident. Maybe it is a result of Michael Johnson. Maybe it is another year in the system. Could be confidence in the QB. It is probably a combination of all that. Those guys look like a different group though.

2. I have a lot of trust in our running backs...they just need to stay healthy. I don't know that I'd trade Kylin Hill for another back in the country. He just runs like he has a point to prove. And Gibson is the perfect complement and is explosive in his own way. Witherspoon looks talented out there too. I'm curious to see him develop these next few years.

3. The offensive line is rotating a ton of guys at the moment. That has to look GREAT for the scouts at the next level. Those 53 man rosters require OL be versatile. And seeing the rotation and depth we have...I'm excited about the progress Marcus Johnson has made on the OL and the depth we have at that position.

4. JOMO made an emphasis in his press conference today that YOUNG RECRUITS can play EARLY if they stay home. Big fan of that and that clip needs to archived. It sounds much different than in the past. It was impressive to see that many first year guys make an impact on Saturday. For the record, I thought Pickering looked pretty explosive in his handful of snaps. I'm really excited about him and Cross dominating the LOS. And Emerson, JJ, GS, Witherspoon.....there is some talent out there.

Those are way early observations though. We have yet to play a P5. Point being, I am keeping my expectations in check. However, on the surface, the offense looks more fluid right now than it did at any point a year ago. It is nice to have confidence you can pick up a first down on 3rd and 8.

Next weekend is another test that will be more difficult than the week prior. We just need to continue building. We have two very winnable home games against a P5 and a team that beat us a year ago.

Huh? That’s the exact same offense Kyler and Baker ran.

What on Gods green earth makes you think Fitz was better than Hurts in any year? Come on bro. That’s absurd.

Nick Fitzgerald ran the ball 221x last year. If that’s not adapting to a running QB then I don’t know what is. Please stop with this idiocy.

Moorhead never adapted to a true spread option that was better suited for him to run and horizontal and short passing game that he could do. We were still running the same vertical **** in the Iowa game. He was too dumb to actually call some running back hand offs, screens, speed sweep options, and things that fitz had run successful the previous years. He is a one trick pony offensive coordinator it is what it is. It’s fine as long as he gets his guys that he wants.

No way. This is like hiring Eminem to play a halftime show but telling him. “Now look, I hear you’re a really successful musician but our fans are used to country music so I’m gonna need you play that.”

I’m 100% certain JoMo and Cohen discussed his offensive system before Cohen made the offer.

I think this is a little bit deceiving. While we put up a lot of yards in our first three games last year, we were also under 50% in the passing game. We racked up a lot of yards in our first two games last year but looked awful when we tried to pass. Through two games this year we are completing 69% of our passes. This offense appears to be far more balanced and sustainable. We currently have the SEC’s leading rusher by over 100 yards and a QB who is third in the league in QBR.

The biggest thing for me is that the offense passes the eye test so far. The passing efficiency has been really encouraging. Even Shrader went 7-of-11 and that included one drop and a long TD that the sun cost us. It’s a big step up from KT going 15-of-34 against Abilene Christian and Fitz throwing incomplete pass after incomplete pass at Kansas State. You’re not going to beat anyone good if you can’t throw the ball decently. With this group, specifically Tommy, I feel better about our chances of moving the ball against good teams. And we obviously can still run it too with Kylin, Nick, and occasionally a QB run.

I don’t think Cohen is a good as an athletic director as some want him to be. You act like this is NCAA Football on Playstation. Coaches have systems they run. If a player doesn’t fit the system, you can’t just download 1995 Nebraska’s playbook and install it within the allotted time frame allowed by the NCAA for practice time, team meetings, etc. Yes, there are tweaks and tuning you can do to accentuate advantages and hide disadvantages, but a QB who can’t throw the 17ing ball accurately can NEVER be hidden, in any system, against SEC defenses. Look at the success (or lack thereof) that Mullen had in 2017 against Bama, Georgia, and Auburn for evidence of that.

You could also flip the script and give Peyton 17ing Manning to Dan Mullen, and he’d go 8-4 or 7-5 because he’d have no clue how to maximize his potential. And we saw that with Tyler Russell too, although he’s a slightly more athletic version of a Manning-type QB.

To emphasize this, we averaged 8.4 yards per play against Lafayette and LA Tech last year, the two closest equivalents to who we've played this year. So far, we've averaged 6.7 yards per play this year.

The main reason our offense seems so much better than last year so far is because we remember the bad times from last year, and there haven't been any bad times so far this year.
