This year is a lot like 2001 to me

In that it can go either way. The last few years reminded me of 1999 and 2000, not in the strictest sense, but in how the peak/cycle went in Jackie's and Mullen's tenure. It was year 9 and 10 for both, but obviously in Mullen's case he was gone and we replaced him for year 10. For that reason, I think we probably mitigate the implosion that was likely coming had Mullen stuck around.

I am slightly hopeful that this 2001 will be more like the one Rosey predicted (not in Rose Bowl, but more on the winning side than 3-8), than the one many of our fans predict. I think we really, really got lucky with the JUCOs redshirting (Rivers, Cole, Landrews) in 2017. Then thankfully Moorhead recognized that we needed some help and hit the transfer portal hard, for this year and next. 9 JUCOs coming in next year, that signals to me that Mullen did not give a damn anymore, and another 2002 and 2003 was headed our way, which ends in his firing and MSU continuing to be a coaching graveyard.

We might wake up a few years from now and realize that Stricklin leaving (and ultimately enabling Mullen to get out without destroying what he built) was one of the best things that happened to our athletic program. 2021 and 2022 is when Moorhead's program should really be rolling.

We aren’t going 3-9, but I’d feel a lot better about the season if Autry and Crumedy (not sure if he’s one of the ten but I’ve seen his name mentioned) were playing every game and Allen Love had gotten his waiver.

This year is all about Moorhead's offense to me. If our lack of depth costs us a close game here or there, that's reasonable.

We should not be putting up single digits in multiple SEC games though.

Speaking of defensive line. That is one thing that I hope does not turn out like the Arizona Western fiasco of 2001. While we did lose a lot of close games that year, not sure I will ever get the memory of Florida out of my mind, keys jingling at halftime while watching them simply rip us to shreds. No pass rush at all, and tailbacks running through holes big enough for a Mack truck. 35-0 at half if I remember. LSU did us the same way, but at home. I hope that is not an omen for the Auburn and Alabama games.

Totally agree. I'm worried about the defensive line and the suspensions, and that may cost us some games. I'm all about offensive improvement this year. As long as we score a lot of points in SEC play the final w-l record doesn't matter to me much.

We're not even close to comparing this year and 01. I distinctly remember back in 01 listening to a regional call in show in memphis where they had went to all the sec schools to examine each team preseason and said that only tenn and fla had more talent than we but it was close. We were expecting a lot that season. There is no lofty expectations like that for this season. I'm figuring 7, maybe 8 wins at best.

Smart people realized that we had talent (skill talent) in 2001, but had some holes specifically on the defensive line. Just like this year. Just because you heard something on a call-in show, doesn't mean everybody was thinking what the sheep thought.

Today, I fully agree with you. Now that KT is leaving and all rumors point towards Mayden being part of tutor-gate, however, the one injury that absolutely cannot happen is one to Stevens early in the season. If that were to happen, 3-9 may still be a stretch, but 4-5 wins would be a distinct possibility

The 2001 DL was bad because we signed some JUCO guys who ended up not being any good. This year's DL has question marks because of inexperience, but I think the talent level there is still pretty strong.

I'm not saying the suspensions won't be a big deal, but the schedule layout does us some favors. If we can't win our first 3 games without those guys then we were going to be in trouble even with them available. This gives us an opportunity to throw some younger guys into the fire and get them some valuable experience without it being a huge detriment to us.

Barring an injury to Stevens I have a pretty high confidence level that we will be noticeably better on offense. That alone is good enough to win at least 7 games as long as our defense isn't terrible. If we can be fairly consistent offensively and not take too big of a step backwards on defense then I see no reason why 8 or 9 wins in the regular season isn't a very realistic possibility.

If you haven't woken up already, you will. We were headed down the sh!tter with DM. He did not want to be here and was never going to grind and strain like the relentless M17er he asked his players to be.

We're going to win at least 8 games this year. Our defense is gonna be about as awesome as last year and our offense is going to score points, lots of 'em. Going to be fun year.

Yeah and one of the main reasons I hardly post on here anymore because of smartasses like you.
